HRH Prince William visits HMS Audacious and opens Submarine Training facility in Faslane

HRH Prince William formally opened the new £34m submarine escape, rescue, abandonment and survival (SMERAS) facility at HMNB Clyde.
This replaces the SETT (Submarine Escape Tank Trainer) at HMS in Gosport as all Royal Navy submarines and training are now being concentrated at Faslane.

Great fun, until you realise that your (training) SEIE suit had a rip in it and your nice little self contained pocket of air is above your eyeballs. First 10m or so I had to blow out until the air bubble expanded enough to change over to 'normal' breathing. Yup, that was exciting!!!

Nice video, thanks. Certainly a great facility addition to HMNB Clyde. Training with the SEIE suit is an amazing experience. One that you hope to never use in on-board emergency conditions. Faslane is a great base for the US NAVY, especially deployed upkeeps. The local citizens of Helensburgh were always very welcoming to Fleet visitors and their families. Carry on.

Excellent facilities! But why is the Royal Navy spending this kind of money in Scotland when there is a possibility of them becoming independent and not wanting anything to do with nuclear weapons? Surely they should be looking at moving our submarine facilities to somewhere in England. Apologies to any Scots I upset.

Perhaps hedging their bets that if they invest in more job-creating facilities, the Scots would continue the basing relationship if they did become independent. If they did get out of the UK and kicked the RN out of Faslane, the UK would be better off leasing the joint use of Kings Bay Georgia for boomers and Norfolk for fast attack subs.

Yes on that day he formally opened and inspected the submarine escape centre as Honorary Commodore of Submarines. Then he went over to Glasgow to inspect and meet all the people building the T26 Frigate and cut the first steel on HMS Belfast (T26#3) representing his Grandmother the Queen And then he went down to Wembley to cheer on England as President of the FA the man does an immaculate job of representing us the people. I doubt you would even manage the first 8 hours of his day.
