Edge menu, Select, Un Subdivide. For the non search route. Nice topology change that may have rare uses.

Unsubdivibe is a very useful took to lower the polycounts of models without making the topology too messy, really useful for optimizations for putting things into games for those on lower end systems

Alt + S are shortcut for inflate, you can also use inflate Tool by click on icon Inflate in Tool Tab (Left Panel)

I believe what it's doing is removing vertices in a checkerboard pattern and reconnecting diagonally which causes the resulting quads to be angled 45 degrees
