Just days before the new $20 per hour minimum wage for fast food workers kicks in in California thousands of fast food workers are being laid off or having their hours reduced in anticipation of business owners, keeping their labor cost under control. Sounds like this will be a great thing for the economy especially when they try to make $20 per hour the national minimum wage...

I know a young woman who went through a 14 month tech program to be a Dental Assistant. She sacrificed for that knowledge and came out with a skill and made a decent wage. She left that state and is now doing fine.

The prices doubled or tripled because of wholesale prices going up and the cost of fuel to deliver the products. Yeah but blame the minimum wage workers and state government for taking the first steps helping people with rent and gas. @@gypsy547OK. Lets do this. Cut pay by 1/3 of current wages. Will the prices drop to 1/3 of what they are now? Nope. Stop blaming the workers unless you are a CEO of a company that relies on free labor. Employees are hired so the owner doesn't have to do all the work. The employee's labor is doubled or tripped (I.E. 8 *3=24) and added to the cost of the product. So the employee's are making 16 per hour for the owner / company per employee. Owners try this instead, cut costs, automate, buy more efficient equipment, do owner kind of stuff to keep you company profitable to pay your workers not increase the stock value to boost your annual bonus. Either you're an owner or you don't mind being exploited. The worker isn't the cause of inflation. It's corporate greed period.

I keep trying to explain this people who don’t understand how frustrating it is to go to school - have to pay for it to learn a skill or trade or necessary education to have a career…. And now our wages stay the same or are even going down…. Meanwhile fast food workers get increased and servers are getting tipped more than ever because prices are going up for food and beverage- so they make greater tips based off of percentages for tips. This system is being set up for people to not want to be in careers that require paying for an education… bartending is looking like a great career path

@keyisersoze

Exactly. If it is so substantially difficult to raise the minimum wage to a living level, then in my opinion, it is not the fault of the minimum wage but rather of our business structures and elected officials. For years, they have let our citizens' minimal living standards fall so low in the name of excessive profits and politics that a living wage given for an honest day's work is considered out-of-touch, laughable, and easily dismissable for the common man. It is a moral failing that those who work honestly in labor in the richest country on the Earth live in conditions similar to those in the developing world.

You don’t understand economics. Higher wages lead to higher labor costs, which forces higher food prices, which leads to fewer customers. If the reduction in the number of customers leads to reduced revenue and profits then there will be automation, reduced hours, and permanent firings.
@kathrynw3
@kathrynw3 Ай бұрын
@@edmundworrell530 First of all, don't assume that I don't know anything about economics. I graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in business and economics and have been working in the finance sector for over a decade. So I am quite familiar with the principles of economics and how they affect international finance, public policies, and business management. I also know that this same hysteria about loss of jobs is what conservatives said in 1996 when the federal minimum wage was raised, and after the wage hike was finally passed, almost 10,000,000 low-wage workers received a raise, with no decline in overall employment, so it's simply a myth that raising the wage automatically means loss of jobs, higher labor costs, or higher food prices. The monopoly of corporations that control the price of food in this country is definitely going to raise food prices regardless of what is going on with labor, because that equates to more profit for them. The bottom line is that if your business model depends on paying your workers starvation wages, then you should not be in business. Raising the minimum wage is good for workers, businesses, and ultimately the economy, based on historical precedent. Keep in mind that we live in a country that easily passes an $858 billion annual defense budget with no real debate but has failed to raise the minimum wage for over a decade, despite nearly two-thirds of its citizens living paycheck to paycheck and 70% living below the poverty level.

The Fed creates inflation to force people to spend. In Weimar Germany inflation was so high that as soon as people got paid they immediately rushed out and spent all the wages on food. To wait an hour was to pay triple or quadruple the price, and get one third to one quarter the food. The Fed tries to create a muted version of that in America with a target inflation rate of 3 percent. Multiply 1.03 by itself 25 times and you will get approximately 2, so prices double every generation; ie; every 25 years. I suggest you get a part time, at home, customer service job, or phone sales job, that pays both a salary plus commission. Be sure to pay the 15 % alternative minimum tax on the commissions you earn. This pays the social security tax, and the payments are then worked into the formula to increase your benefits each year.

If you can have a robot make your Big Mac in a minute and it only costs $30,000 for initial setup with no paid extras like vacation sickness lawsuits and all you need is one or two people to keep the machine stocked that's what businesses are going to start doing I've seen videos where stores in I believe it's Japan already have automated production lines and servers and they only have one person running the entire operation basically restocking the machines

In my experience, even when we're tslking about places paying the federal minimum tipped wage, there are precious few managers in any fast food restaurant that hire any more people than they absolutely have to to run their store, and the crew they do hire is scheduled for as few hours as they can get away with. The idea that managers everywhere will just start jettisoning staff if they have to pay more per hour just doesn't add up, and any managers that can afford to lose otherwise good employees were being very suboptimally run.

When one contributed to the 401(k) plan, the contribution was not taxed (tax deferred). So, the individual benefited from not having to pay income tax on the contribution amount as well as any earnings from the deferred tax amount as well. So in the early withdraw the individual has to pay the income tax on that amount and the "penalty" to offset the additional earning.

You’re half right, government interference in things are a problem, however this is t a political problem. It’s happening across the entire western world. The root of the problem is free enterprise and the expectation of infinite growth. Sadly, growth is finite, and think of all the extra costs involved with being an employee or an employer in this day and age compared to 20 years ago, ultimately there’s way more organisations wanting their slice of every one else’s pie. A hundred years of free enterprise is ironically, the issue.

@@TerrorTrooperM "A hundred years of free enterprise is ironically, the issue." Yet, it didn't even take half as long for inflation and unreasonable (green) energy policies to ramp up production costs. Added with increased taxes, it's easy to see who it is that wants a slice of the pie. Even here in Norway, the "welfare paradise", big business owners are packing up and leaving the country, because our high taxes show that there are better places to make a profit. Not to mention our government selling our electricity to foreign nations. The government becomes richer, yes, but the tradeoff is that electricity prices increase for the people. Always remember this: just because a country's government is wealthy and powerful, it doesn't mean the same can be said for the people.

@@TerrorTrooperM If you have not read the book "The End of More" you echo the sentiments of the Authors, but it does not apply to the U.S. we have been living in a peculiar "blip" in history. The Boomers (the largest generation in US history) were investing heavily for retirement (this is a trend of all generations in the last 10-15 years before retirement). Half the BB's have retired and taken their money out of the market (less capital = capital costs go up). The Russians in 1992 dropped an empire worth of raw materials on the market for cheap. And China industrialized, with a capital system that incentivized cheap labor. All of these are coming to an end. All are inflationary, even for us. For the rest of the war (barring a few countries) it's bad news. The U.S. does not depend on foreign trade, we (because the Millennials are a large generation) will still have a consumption driven economy, but "reshoring" manufacturing, well that's going to be inflationary also. I'm not saying it won't hurt a little but some countries as you know them today will not survive. If D.C. would concentrate on the obvious, growth we could be running at 8% growth to offset the inflationary trends we are in. Along with the book mentioned above the other books I recommend are Guns, Germs and Steel (he gets a little heavy into Chickpeas but it's a good geo pollical starter for understanding demographics and geography and how they effect a nation's economy. Then Peter Zeihan did a book (it's been updated) called "The Absent Superpower" which in my opinion is the best of his 4 books.

LOL you think its ever not been corrupt? The system is designed for a couple people to squeeze all the money they can out of a business until it's destroyed. sure but thats really not fair. costs of living/labor/housing you name it, inceased something like 100% in the last decade compared to 35% wage increases in that same period? something like that... even with $20 an hour its still basically like... $12 an hour. so at $15 an hour given all the insane inflation costs that will never go down again, its like they were getting $9 an hour. essentially the illusion here is that the minimum wage increase is an increase at all. its not lmao, in fact increasing the minimum wage STILL doesnt come close to the cost of living/inflation increases from a % perspective. Since I'm from Australia, which has the highest minimum wage in the world, I find that Americans don't appreciate labor-let's face it, slavery was historically the main driver of your economy. Allow these companies that are unable to pay a fair salary to close. Low-paid workers contribute to the poverty of others; better wages encourage consumer spending, which boosts the overall economy. These companies that are collapsing have unsound business plans.The Australian economy hasn't had an economic recession in over 32 years. e.g $27 an hour minimum nationwide - no business is exempt its legally mandatory - Saturdays 50% more or $37.50 an hour, Sundays double $50 per hour and public holiday minimum $75 per hour - we have no tipping in services areas, all taxes are including in all pricing - e.g minimum first year salary of a teacher here is $107k per year - yet it all works well across the country -including McDonald's etc Plus all businesses must pay 12% on top of your income to your superannuation - pension plan

Then they went corporate and the prices rose and the coffee didnt taste as good. Now the machine makes the coffee, the "baristas" are just there to put on a fancy show of serving the customers. Of course, both McDs and Big Buck$ have employee manuals that tell exactly how the slave, I mean employee, is to do their job. They both lost my business more than ten years ago.
