I am going to share a additional tip on the very hard to remove Cartridge issue , All Replacement Cartridges of this type from Moan Come with a special Tool in the package that many think is simply a protective cap on the top of the stem , this "tool" fits down into the top of your stuck cartridge enabling you to turn it , you then can use a wrench on the square head of the tool rotate the cartridge first breaking it free from all stiction of the rubber seals , than remove the tool and it will come out easily. If you end up with hot and cold selection reversed remove the handle holder held down by the Philips screw and rotate the inner valve stem a half a turn then reassemble , Example of the use of this tool .. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXzUe6VtqrGAoqc

Thanks for taking the time to show us this repair. I found it very informative and well presented. My kitchern faucet is a little different than yours with a longer handle. What I was afraid of was not knowing what size cartridge to put in. I thought I would have to turn off the water, pull out the cartridge, go to the hardware store to find a replacement. But with your video I just looked for a 1225 cartridge before starting the job. The clerk told me that Moen faucets are all under a lifetime warranty. I told him I no longer had the receipt. He says no problem and goes to a sepsrate cabinet and pulls out a cartridge. He said it was free of charge. Doing the repair was a breeze knowing what to look for and how to do it. So Many thanks. I replaced the cartridge last weekend and it was a bear to remove, a pry bar pulling upward on needle nose pliers through the hole in the brass stem and a stack of wood blocks on the sink. One rubber square seal was ripped up once removed, I did clean the bore of the faucet with a slotted wood dowel with sand paper to polish it inside for a fresh finish for the new cartridge, and some faucet lube works great and does not leak now! Moen 1225 from Menards. Great video.

YG H yes you need a proof of purchase according to the warranty terms of Moen Canada www.moen.ca/warranties/general-lifetime-limited-warranty Perhaps Home Depot doesn't ask for it, and fill the warranty form by letting think they see a proof of purchase, anyway Moen will reimbursed them the value of the part.

At 7:37, you can clearly see the white deposits at the joints where it was leaking. Mine leaks at one joint under the handle, but above the faucet.With other videos, they mentioned the leak where yours is, but they continued below after removing the cartridge, to remove 2 large washers. The free Moen cartridge kits, with o rings come with Allen wrench, but also with the variety of o rings, and a proper lubricant that will not damage the rubber ring. I did not see you show those rings. But....it worked perfectly. Great video.

Great video! Just make sure you watch the orientation of the initial cartridge and white piece before replacing them. And take it slow putting the allen bolt back in handle. I rushed it the first time and messed the orientation of the handle. You have to hold the handle at an exact, correct orientation to get allen bolt back in properly. Also I used a t-shaped handle to remove the cartridge. I didn't read the instructions at first (hey, I'm a guy) and tried to turn the T handle like a wine bottle opener. Instead, you are supposed just use the t-handle to pull straight up. But by turning it, I was able to loosen the cartridge so it easily pulled up with a pliers.

Great video! I have never done anything like this before, and the step by step instructions were great! Just an aside, at Home Depot, they have a wonderful little gadget that is designed to remove the cartridge with ease. It is by Danco, it is for brass, plastic, and post-temp cartridges, cost is about $16, and it made pulling out my cartridge as easy as uncorking a bottle of wine. Ok, just finished this. It's true about using the special tool do help get it out. I didn't have it so I too stood on top of the sink to get it out. When I bought the new stem, the special tool came with it. It's just a plastic small piece. Fyi on this reinstall, I thought I didn't seat the stem correctly after I finished because only a little water was coming out. I took it all back out and tried again along with a few cuss words. I put it back together , same deal. I got pissed and started to turn it off and on like a mad man and then it started to flow like normal. In other words, after your install, turn the water off and on a bunch. What's happening is the o rings are finding there home, so to speak. I washed my hands, told the wife I fixed it (sex later) and now i will have a beer. Adios.

Good information! I just had my first Moen faucet start to drip and I went to do this task, using the Moan tool to extract the old cartridge, and still couldn't get it out! Off to buy a Delta faucet! So after an hour of struggling and two of us trying to pull the handle off, I finally got a hair dryer, WD40 and a three foot piece of wood to lever, with a twisting motion, and pop the handle off with as much strength as I could give it. It went flying three feet in the air finally. What the video shows will work if it's a fairly new faucet. But a 14 year old one, even one I had apart 5 years ago, will get calcification build up under it and it's about as strong as epoxy.

The hardest part us removing the old cartridge, the new part came with a white plastic to help loosen the old cartridge. Thanks you for this helpful video. How did you remove the calcium buildup by the way? Thanks again!

Completely agree. Seems like removing the old cartridge is the most challenging part. Was for me too! I don’t remember removing any calcium build up...this video is a few years old now and so is my memory. Thanks for the comment!

Mine was pretty stuck, and I was super worried. Then I inserted the allen key into the hole in the shaft, and pried it out with the flat screwdriver.

Don't know if this thread is active, but it's been very helpful to me. I have one question. Should we use silicone-based grease before inserting the new cartridge? Since it wasn't in my cartridge's instructions to do so, I did not do this. But I have seen where others say it's imperative to do so. Very helpful video.

An excellent job of presenting the step-by-step procedure. I was confused about how far the little white tool is supposed to be turned. I believe it is about 1/2 turn. A full turn did not seem to work. At any rate, I fiddled back and forth and eventually a strong tug got the cartridge out. I don't know if you can edit your video to throw in a comment about how much of a turn is involved.
@FastFixYouTube7 жыл бұрын
Richard Bramwell thanks for the comment, Richard! Unfortunately, KZbin no longer has options for video editing once the video is uploaded. There are several things I want to change in the video (your suggestion is one of them) but in order to do so I’d have to re-upload and lose everything associated with this video. I’m glad it helped you! Take care.

Moen site states that "You must have the original purchase receipt in order to receive warranty replacement parts"... needless to say, after 15 years I can't seem to put my hand on it. Great vid, I'm going to give it a go, even after paying for a replacement cartridge it's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new faucet,.
@FastFixYouTube6 жыл бұрын
BoggWeasel this is true! Price isn’t too bad, but a few people commented that they didn’t have their receipt and were still able to get the replacement at no cost. This probably depends on a number of things, but you might give it a try. Best of luck!

Moen has NEVER asked me for a receipt. As long as you are the original buyer of the faucet, that is you didn't move into the house where the faucet was already installed. They asked me for the model and the symptoms, and if I'm the original buyer, and for my address to ship the parts for free! Awesome service!

Make sure that the 2 plastic dividers on the top of the one behind the other, are align w/the top of the housing facing you , that way you can slide your clip in, if you need to buy a clip, either Ace Hardware or Amazon. Lowes or Home Depot don't carry them. Cost for the clip about $2.00 Cilps should slide in, w/out too much effort, if you are having a hard time putting the clip in, then 2 plastic divers on the cartridge are not align w/the housing, make sure you just press hard down to get the cartridge all the way down for the alignment so the clip can go in. I had to use my thumb & index fingers to push the cartridge all the way down. Moen makes only 2 clips for all their cartridges. One for the faucets and one for the showers. Make sure you compare the old Clip w/the new one, or just use the old one., I just ordered an extra set of clips, and got a shoe box and label it, 'SHOWER & FAUCET" hardware and I put in the old cartridges in plastic baggies and label them where they came from. I used the MOEN Tool to take out the cartridges I had to pull it out at the end but the tool took out about 3/4s of the cartridges, the rest was......... a little muscle, once your got the cartridge tool and you tighten the bolt of the tool, then make sure you turn the cartridge I would say about 10 times or more, right to left to completely loosen it up before you start to pull it out. Or you can turn the cartridge right & left & as you turn, pull a little out at a time. Take your time, w/pluming you need a little patience. Thank You & Good Luck.

So when I pulled off the dome, the retainer nut and pivot stop remained inside - the replacement parts I had shipped from Moen included a new pivot and retainer, but I can't get the old ones out of the dome - any advice? (EDITED: I had been thinking they unscrewed but I just pushed down on the plastic insides from the top of the dome using a screwdriver with a light tap of the hammer and it popped out.) - thanks for making helpful videos!

I’ve heard of this happening to others. It’s hard to say what to do, but you could spray penetrating fluid or try an “easy-out” system. If it were me, I’d replace the whole thing as you mentioned. I ended up replacing mine about two years after I made this video because it started leaking again. Best of luck.

Your video is great...thanks for that. I have followed the directions to a "T"....I get no water thru tho...I must be doing something wrong even tho I've checked and double checked and redone several times...yes I've turned the water valve back on under the sink, but it's like it's off. UGH.
@FastFixYouTube4 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Sorry to hear that! I assume water was flowing (and leaking) prior to doing the cartridge change, correct? Assuming that’s the case, be sure you purchased the correct cartridge for your faucet. I know that’s obvious, but stranger things have happened... if you’ve got the correct cartridge are you able to turn the handle in a full sweep as before? Basically, I’m trying to determine if you’ve got enough range in the handle to open the cartridge. Feel free to let me know what you find and I might have other ideas for your problem. Best of luck!
@darleenzigich70074 жыл бұрын
@@FastFixKZbin Thanks so much for the prompt response. Yes, the water was flowing and leaking prior...The cartridge Moen sent was the exact same that I pulled out of the faucet. I ended up calling a plumber...I guess he had the magic touch, because it's working now. He didn't say what was wrong, if anything. Parts were in there in the correct order, I think maybe some of the plastic round pieces may have been in disarray..maybe just needed man strength ;-) Thanks for your help! @@FastFixKZbin Greetings Fast Fix! Thank you SO MUCH for posting this video! I hope you still update on here. I am in the same spot as Shane, above. I didn't know about the twisting option, and didn't. My clip was actually behind instead of in front. So, since I didn't twist it, do I still install the new cartridge the way it was previously, with the clip in back? I didn't notice anything the 1st time or at 4:45 about turning the cartridge. However, I'm so damn glad you mentioned standing on the sink. That is what I had to do, and I'm not exactly frail! Thanks a lot for the video!
@FastFixYouTube4 жыл бұрын
Richard Terzieff hello! I would reinstall the clip as it was installed when you removed it. So if it was in the back, clip it in the back. It may not matter either way. As far as the twisting goes, it’s not necessary to twist the cartridge so that’s a moot point. Hope this helps! Let me know if not.

my cartridge screw is totally stuck or stripped. It doesn't come out (the part around 3:10 of the video. Any ideas?
@FastFixYouTube7 жыл бұрын
1sgChris hmm...is the screw head stripped (where the screwdriver meets the screw) or are the screw threads stripped? I’ve never removed a cartridge without first removing the cartridge screw, but I bet it’s possible to do so because the screw doesn’t attach the cartridge to the faucet. Remove the plastic base and try to pull the cartridge out with the screw still in it. In an case, it sounds like you’d need to get a replacement screw.

I changed a new moen cartridge but still driped from the spout after the close of water, i opened it again , i pushed from the top the inner part of the cartridge a bit out so you can get to the 'O " at the bottom of the cartridge , ( very small O ring )remove the O ring , ( use a tiny thin flat screw driver or a pin to take out the O ring ) put a tefflon tape around the grove of the metal only once (other wise it will be to high ) and put the O ring back on top of the teffolon tape, what it does is raises the O ring , put it back on , and it works fine , no body has mentioned this on any of the comments ,
