pretty clever idea jack. I love metal fab.work, i did it for 5 years. just an idea on the back pieces,have you tried tubing,say 1",sliding through 2",can still have ability to change widths,from my experience square tubing is very strong. just an idea

Looking good! Question? At the extended length is the overlap enough for the pressure the vise exerts? Saw the square tubing sugggestion which would add another area for the forces on the extended length?

We think we are very close to the final design, but the prototype is a good way to test it.
