Nice job working with Matt. Takes patience - you're a natural teacher. And I too remember learning this skill from my brother at a young age. I did feel like I really knew something useful that most others didn't! Still do.

I just cut out the square area. On the backside glue and (temporarily) screw strips of 1/8” plywood that has been cut 1.5” wide, so I have a 3/4” wide ledge. I then glue and (temporarily) screw the patch drywall into place. Both the hole and patch have been chamfered a quarter inch or so. After 30 minutes the glue is dry and I remove the screws. Then I fill the gaps with mud, let dry and sand for two coats, and finally prime. No, I didn’t forget to mention taping, there's no need, because the drywall is a solid piece again. The wall is perfectly flat and you cannot see anything once it’s painted. I’ve been complimented on how well the method works, it leaves no trace, no raised area. Best of all it requires very little mudding skill for great results.

Nice work guys, and it's a keyhole saw John! If you mess up the paper on your Montana patch, you can use mesh tape across the back of your piece that extends the inch and a half on all sides like you did and then place it in the hole and finish! Great video guys! Keep it up!

Big fan of the channel but I've got to comment.... Nothing wrong with this method but I don't know of any many experienced drywallers that do the "california" method. In this particular case you would remove any loose paper around the edges and fill the hole with fast set mud and paper tape(or non-woven fiberglass) over it. If you had to cut out a larger section of drywall because of the crack causing a flap of drywall in the cavity then it's better to stick with the original method of gluing and screwing in a wood backer strip then gluing/screwing your patch, then tape. The thickness of tape is going to be less than that of the "butterfly" wings that have the extra thickness of orange peel and paint. Then float out three layers of fast set mud of increasing diameter(maybe 24" circle) making sure to keep a bare minimum of mud over the paper tape. Scrape any edges in between coats and a little sanding on your final coat then apply your texture. Mud buildup in this case is not of particular concern since the orange peel hides a multitude of sins. The hard part is the transition of the new orange peel edges and matching the orange peel texture. Flat paint helps a lot too.

Doing it this way will always leave a proud surface. For holes this size, I just remove the loose plaster, dampen the hole and fill with plaster making sure you get it behind the hole. Leave for a few minutes and then overfill. A flush finish and won't crack as you've taken the porosity away with the water (which you didn't do, so yours may crack when drying).

I'm extremely frustrated with your advice John... I did it "Exactly" like you said to but to speed up the process I chose to use a long bladed knife to cut completely through the drywall board all at once. Still leaving the front paper remaining of course. This however kept removing the front paper entirely anyway. Seriously why would you even suggest this method? After six attempts I did finally created a patch with paper on 3 sides. I decided to just use it as I was getting extremely agitated with your process. I then used a 10" long blade on my "Sawz-all" to be quicker in cutting out the hole in the wall. This resulted in me cutting out a hole on the opposite side of the wall as well. The new hole then required yet another patch to be done thus doubling the work load. The real unfortunate part of all this was the hole in the adjoining wall was in an adjoining apartment. I'm extremely lucky that they were understanding about this... Seriously John??? Really??? Are you kidding me, because I am kidding you!!! Forgive me my friend. (smiles sheepishly) Love all the videos you guys produce. Nice job taking the lead on this one. You guys are a blessing to us all.

Why didn't you just fill with putty, that way is on necessary and takes too long.. what you could do is put scrap paper in the hole and putty over it if the hole is little bit bigger.
