When I was in my 20s [1973]I worked for a roofing company with 40 guys. We used to come in at 6:30 and our trucks were loaded for the day. We usually had a half hour to 45 minute drive to the job. New construction usually ranch or split level. We backed the truck up to the closest gutterboard and we would felt the roof with 15# to start then shingle up 6'. From there we would stand on the shingle pallet and toss bundles to the edge stacking up 6 bundles at a time. From there we would continue shingling. Best day ever was 8 hours and 17 2/3 square hand nailing 3-tab.

+John D One A Square is 100 Hundred Square Feet. One Bundle is usually 1/3 of a Square. Therefore 33-1/3 Square Feet in a Bundle.
@gerrittklashorst73066 жыл бұрын
No sir a square is a section that is 10'x10' or 3 sheets of plywood. You ideally want to place one nail at both ends no more then an inch from the end of the shingle and the rest of the nails should be dispersed somewhat evenly between the end two. It really depends on the roof pitch where in the nail zone you put the nails. For a steep roof over a 5-12 you can nail right on the line but with a 4-12 or lower pitch you need to nail just a little bit higher so you don't have water bleeding back on the nail heads. Go online and find instructions from elk, iko, Owens corning or gaf cause they are some of the biggest material manufactures in the us and have plenty of installation instructions for you

Except these shingles require 5 nails spaced evenly. Not 3 on one half of the shingle and hopefully one on the other end. Most people use the stripper for shake nailing. After a few years he will get the hang of pulling 5 at a time. I do like the set+1 stroke method over the 2 stroke hand nailing method. One note though, go backs cost money. Nail it all while you're there. If you can't then you don't have a real rhythm.

Mike Brennan we get paid when the job is finished. We have to go fast to make a living. We need to be onto the next job. And for us with experience, going fast for us isn't excluding workmanship. If someone has little to no experience and going that "fast", then it's a problem. We understand everyone thinks they're special and their house is the only house that matters, but you aren't. And it isn't. It's just another house. We do this everyday for years. We can go fast and do it right. If we didn't, or couldn't, we wouldnt be in business very long. People need to make a living.
@thurstoncrawford68315 жыл бұрын

@chadgrov5 жыл бұрын
Thurston Crawford when you've been doing it for a decade or two it's just another house. Sorry to say. It's done right and that's all that matters. Also most people DO want it done fast because they don't want their home to be a construction site for more than a day or two. Not to mention that with years of experience shinglers tend to go at their own pace, which is generally "fast". There's a difference between fast and sloppy/indifferent. If I give you a 10 year warranty on labour and whatever manufacturer warranty on material there's not much to whine about. Im sure you don't complain when your car needs repairs and it's done in a timely fashion. Same thing.

There is no need to hand-nail anymore. It's a waste of effort, time, and money. Even in the winter. I've been roofing this entire snowy winter with a gun, and I've had no problems.

I agree, here in florida I nail until around noon in the summers and come back around 5-pm and nail until dark. No need for hand nailing. Besides 99% of leaks are flashing details.

I'd rather have someone hand-nail my roof simply because they couldn't cop out and blame their tools if it was fucked.

Gun or hand nailed it would be under warranty if you hired a roofing contractor that was worth anything

If it was my own house and I had all the time in the world to get it done, I'd hand-nail it, sure. As long as I can sip a beer in between bundles and work at a leisurely pace blasting the radio without a care in the world, my boss not hounding me for not getting done 7 squares per man per day tear off, dry in, and shingle, I'd hand-nail that roof. Any mechanic worth his salt keeps his gun and compressor in good working order at all times. If you blow through shingles or shoot low(or high) nails in shingles, that's your dumbass fault. Should have taken better care of your shit.

@@angelmedina3367 sure buddy. No company paying illegals 350 a day. I can make 350 a day at my job an I am not on a damn roof in the summer. Two weeks vacation every year, 401k, insurance, sick time, holiday pay, and guarantee salary all year. Westlake chemical company. I use to work construction and it's not worth the toll on your body. What OSHA violation can you spot. Not a single person tied off on the roof. No fall protection.One person falls off the roof and the company is done. Cheap ass company don't care who falls off a roof and you think they pay 350 a day? Ok illegal immigrant.

That's 10 shingles a minute, in other words, a lie.
@gerrittklashorst73066 жыл бұрын
Your nuts. A bundle of arch is 32 shingles and a square is 3 to 4 bundles depending on the brand. To nail 10 square in an hour he would have to nail 960 shingles in an hour with 4 to 6 nails per shingle unless he owns a truck size compressor and a gun that was totally perfect that is a flat out lie. It takes time to cut bundles and lay them out then every time you run out of nails that takes more time, you might have buckles in the felt which is more time then roofs have pipes, vents, sky lights, a.c. exhaust vents and fire places which all take time and you can't rush or they won't look right and will leak like crazy. You might have thought you were adding to this conversation but clearly you know nothing and felt it was needed to add your opinion with absolutely no knowledge of the subject

youd need multiple compressors and guns for this huge crew lines tangle reloading gun maybe new build and doesnt have power yet so add a genny to run the compressors hammers and kneepads are cheap most likely why

Vance S Some roofers over drive the nails with a gun and have poor nail placement. There are advantages to each hand nailed or gun nailed.
@rtmccormick17 жыл бұрын
Almost every roofing crew I've seen runs gas engine powered compressors. More power and no risk of breaking circuits. You could cut the required crew per job in half, spread them out over multiple concurrent jobs, and probably do 4 times the jobs per day. There is no advantage to hand nailing that outweighs the benefits of using pneumatic nailers.
@drock51087 жыл бұрын
i agree with using nail guns. if u knpw anything about nail guns u wpuld know they can be adjusted so they deliver just enough power. . no advantages to hand nailing. rookies. hand nailing is for cavemen. takes double the time.

Lol typical! Not about how fast someone does a roof I over see a roofing company and I'll be the first to tell you about 80% of the so fast Spanish roofing crews we hire try and blow it out and always mess shit up, leave trash everywhere, use old flashing filled with holes, and are sloppy as hell! The moral of this story usually the faster the crew the equals shitty quality work, that don't get covered by shingle manufacturing company, and ends up leaking or looking like shit.
@nealdavis78077 жыл бұрын
Jose Sanchez I am a white guy who learned to roof in Texas. I used to tear off roofs right with the Mexicans and I was faster than they were. I used to carry up my own shingles from the road and lay them with a hammer and nails. I was so fast that when I moved to Florida some guys watching me asked me to join their crew. They had guns and I hand nailed and we split the money even. I used to do all the valleys and cut up work while they did the field. I must say though some of the best roofers I ever saw were Mexican. They used to say Aztec Power and on average worth 2 of any other worker.
