@@NWIVeteranConstruction Could you do (or have you done) a video showing what I do when I have a roof to wall condition, like a gable dying into a vertical wall, where I have lap joint vinyl siding coming down and meeting the roof on both sides of the gable? Do you remove the low piece of siding and the J channel to step flash it properly? I need to do my house this spring and this is a condition I'm not familiar with. I've always done it on new construction where the siding wasn't in place yet. Thanks!

I’m 61 been doing roofing since I was 13 during summer holidays. When we do steep we’re extra old school. We set up siding planks 2’ below the trough to stand on. We lean our power ladder again the planks. Then we use 2X6 s with jacks every 6’ all the way up. That way you lean your bundles on the boards and we always have a board to stand on . So much easier on the body when you do this every day. I see guys work all day with ropes and just fighting gravity all day. What a pain. Your a hard worker man. Nice to see guys working for a living. At the end of the day you can look back and say look what I did yo.

I watch all of ur vids and I roof also. Our company bought all of us cougar paw boots to wear on steep roof pitches. I always used couch cushions before that but those boots are awesome. Kinda expensive but you make up for it in productivity

May I suggest on a steep pitched roof just attach 3 safety rules to the peek and let them lay across the roof just too have them there in case of a slip. When you finish one side you can easily use then on the opposite side. It looks good and your insurance company will appreciate it. It only takes a minute to set up and gives you a security feeling your guys might need. I won't mention safety again. YOU DO GREAT WORK AND ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸

A pouch is always necessary in my opinion!It makes you faster and more efficient?On steep roofs I was taught to use 2x4 nailed thru the shingles.Well under a cut out of a shingle and caulked when done.Or you can caulk little metal pieces in the spots.Depending on the roof that way you can stock the roof with shingles as you need them and can also step on the shingles to get higher so not to use so many 2x4.One more thing do you not chaulk lines?Also I use a shingle holder that can be stood on as well.I like the cushions but if your not good with them you can get hurt.

Did you ever consider investing in pump staging, set up your 4x4 aluminum posts & staging, they easily move around and makes the job easier & much safer. Just a thought. Having grown up in roofing and done the work for many years. There is no way you can honestly say an 8/12 is not sketchy. Tools start sliding on a 6/12. Steep roofs as sketchy as heck I don't care who you are how well you get around on them. Physics and gravity don't change.

I just wanna say you were raggin on a guy who got a lot done for detail work and a newbie ish cat on a 9/12 pitch for not being as fast as you. When you had the easy side. Now when you are experienced beyond 5ish years details shouldn’t take much time anymore from that point. But still. Gravy sides are always faster than detail sides. Also we use 6-7 nails in Utah pending city codes. Makes the shingles feel safe to walk on those steeper pitches such as 8/12 and 10/12. I love your videos though and all your tips or spot on!!! It’s always about being consistent and always consider the quality and actions required for your consistency to maintain a good reputation. Beautiful work.

I've found that in some situations a rope is more of a trip hazard than a help. But in all honesty its personal preference and opinion.

On a cold weather install is it necessary to put gaps in between the shingle joints to account for expansion when it warms or do you still put them tight? And what temperature is too low to roof? Thanks!

they say below 43 degrees usually but when the sun is out its still ok around 30. don't say I said that though, just an uspoken rule around here. I've shingled in 8 degree weather lol and I install as normal. shingles don't need room for expansion and contraction. never been told that from anyone I've ever talked to and i've never seen that on anything I've read

My last day of doing steep roofs was when we were doing a cedar shake at 9/12 pitch 3 stories up. I slid all the way to the edge and stopped my slide with my hammer by slamming it into the cedar. After that,,,,, No more. Was winter time too.

Love these videos man but one thing to make you faster and stop fighting that hoses run it from the bottom but two nails in it at the edge so it don’t fall down and you will never have to deal with it imagine that then minus a hour or so not fighting a hose. 9/12 normal where I am. Almost walkable but need a bottom kicker for slides. And I use foam matting too. Not only for traction but to protect shingles. Done that forever

Anything above 7/12 is not considered safely walkable. Can you walk on an 8 or 9, sure, but not safely and without undue risk of a quick trip to the ground.

I prefer using a 4' and a 8' ladder on steep roofs. I find it quicker and easier also you can put half the bundle on top of the ladder to hold them. Also I don't wear work boots. I prefer wearing sneakers. I find I get better traction for when I need it the most

Metal roofs installed by a reputable contractor will hold up for 50 +yrs I would recommend a hidden fastener roof,shingles are good for 15-20 yrs depending on weather and are also the lower end and cheaper way to install. If you install an exposed fastener metal roof,you will find yourself having to replace the screws in 15-20 years.

Then lower it down to where you can barely get 3 shingles on (that way you can reach the bottom easier) sometimes it's a little rough bending over to get the starter on if you try to put that board on i.p.o higher close to the line on the ice

I’m no expert. I’ve only roofed one house, my own (with the help of a friend who knew a thing or two). So my question is this: why no use a harness or rope? I would think it would allow you to move around faster and save time because you can kind of bounce around the roof fast since you don’t have to worry as much about each step. For the roof I did I just tied a strong rope to a big tree on the other side of the house then over to top and down to my waist. I was able to work much faster and more confidently. Does using a rope or harness slow you down? Please explain. Thanks.

For some it gets in the way and slows us down. OSHA doesn’t like it but some consider it more dangerous because it’s also a tripping hazard and it’s hard enough to manage the hose along with a rope. For anything steeper than this a hook ladder can be used or we use jacks and boards (primarily for slate roofs as they have extremely steep pitches) but for this style of roof, with practice, you learn to watch your step and be careful and aware of where your stepping. Also wear grippy tennis shoes and not climb in the rain. Many many roofers do it cause it’s simpler. It’s all preference or if your union etc.

@@nofurtherwest3474 You’d need a place to set it up. It’s not too expensive but there are some homes that are tight together with no room for a crane. It sounds nice but you’d have to expense it to the homeowner and they usually go for cheapest bid. It’s about speed and getting it done quick for shingle homes. That’s why a crew sometimes has 5-10 people so they can get maybe 3 homes done in a day. Usually two is the target.

It was entertaining watching this video and at the rate at how fast you work. When I used to work on big construction jobs (not roofing) I remember hauling up large buckets and hods of cement. 40 years into construction, I don't feel as comfortable going up on roofs. Maybe as you get older, your balance and flexibility changes. The interesting thing is I feel much safer teaching and training in martial arts that climbing up on roofs but then again when it comes to hights I never was the Daredevil type. Thanks for sharing.

So here is the problem as I see it. If you get hurt, what happens to the business? Falling off a roof is never good, and what happens if you fall wrong? Better to just put a rope on and slip on a jumar ascender so you can be belayed and work the roof including hard pitches easily and safely. I know you are trying to get this done fast, but still, with the ascender you could still make sort work of all this, and get it done in a safer manner. As a business owner myself, I need to think of those things about what happens if I get screwed up, then what happens to the company. Something to think about anyway. You are fast, just be nice if you were safe. I am losing too many veteran brothers and sisters to have one go simply because of a mistake.

It’s to follow a method, the no waste method, you start a roof and go 6 inches up to 36 I think back into whatever way you’re shingling, and re use those pieces from biggest to smallest and repeat it.

Speaking of unsafe I think the way you are focused and paying attention to your footing is fine, unsafe is coming to work hungover or still drunk not mentioning other drugs. Almost every accident i have seen was early in the day not paying attention hurrying through trying to get back to their medicine. I am a carpenter who has done a roof or two so I've seen more accidents driving than at work OSHA Doesn't care about you they are trying to save your insurer's ass and collect a check like everyone is. I did roofing before nail guns that's why im watching your videos so i get an idea of what can be done with proper equipment THANK YOU! I do find your videos educational and a time lock on how we did roofing.

In Florida it's six nails per shingle. It didn't occur to me until I saw this video that in other states you can get away with fewer. I might be a little anxious, but I don't think I'd be on that roof without a safety harness. In the sun and the heat, it's a huge drag and a pain to deal with, but one slip is all it takes.

typically the states on the coast of america have to use 6 nails per shingle. in washington state where i am it’s 6 nails on the coast but when we do some houses further inland we can use 4 per shingle. same for california too

you should also consider checking out the Pitch Hopper, it’s used the same way as a foam cushion but it’s way more reliable. you can use it on a 6/12-14/12. there’s 28 inch ones and there’s 4 ft ones

My guys charge me like 4.50 a ft installed I think but that's the contractor pricing and that's before he includes his accessories. I usually anticipate a bill of roughly 6 or 7$ a ft when it's all said and done.

This is a old video but I'll tell you the safest way to do steep roofs. Go and buy some roof jacks, brackets or whatever you call them set them up with 2x6s. Shingle up five or six feet and set up another row. Repeat all the way up the roof. It doesn't take that much extra time.

Boards are always safer than anything. If you slide you only slide a six feet and catch a board. It saves you from squenching your asshole all day too.

Those strips are just so the shingles don't stick together in the bundle with the sealing tar on the shingle

What the guy above said. When the shingle is properly installed, the tape strip is not in contact with the tar line. Some local dumbass told me that same thing, and he also said the starter is supposed to be installed upside down. There is a lot of misinformation out there.

I agree with you regarding ropes, but I would have had another row of roof jacks about half way up, as well as extending that bottom one over to help with the soil pipe. I've never tried the foam pads before, but I can see where they could add some traction.

@@NWIVeteranConstruction So I just went through a course on wind and hail damage and during the course they were talking about how asphalt strip that adheres shingles together. The said if the roof is put on in cold weather it may not adhere and the strip will become contaminated with dust. I see you putting roofs on in the cold but how cold is too cold?

@@FBurck that is true in many situations yes especially new construction. They say not below 43 degrees I think. Every roof I've done this year has been right at it and sun plays a big factor too. There's precautions you can take to shingle in the cold but most don't do them and just shingle through anyway

Double nail rake edges and eve edge corners this is where most blow off occur just like this guy only putting one nail at rake edges way to far in from edge

@@guitardedimbisol6087 I've demonstrated why that"double nail isn't necessary in my 2 hour video. Blowoffs in general are due to high nails i.e nails not in the common bond. When you nail correctly the nail you put in the shingle above goes in THE EXACT same location as the nail you put if double nail. I can assure you my nails are as close as possible to the edge without blowing out the side
