I used to be Warranty Engineer for Deutz here in Atlanta. 8 years of daily carnage and every one was claimed as a "Factory Defect"! Um, no. Factory engines don't come with stick welded up and reground cranks dude! I've seen shit YOU GUYS wouldn't believe!

@@Project10sec You got THAT right! I did the local Community College Automotive Tech program when I was in HS. Jr/Sr years in '75 and '76. Got it as a elective and FREE! Bus ride there and back every day. They took us into a room full of small Engine parts. Crankcases over here cranks over there pistons in another corner. We were supposed to pick out parts and build an engine. They didn't tell us what parts were what. So the other two guys on my "team" and I started digging. OK. This looks like It'll fit. Couple of days of that and we figured it out. We didn't get a Briggs but a Tecumseh. Reaming con rod bearings with an expanding reamer fit it all together with NO instructions. The deal was it had to run for 5 minutes after we were done. First team up it wouldn't start. Second team it started but locked up in seconds. Ours lit right off and ran, and ran. Instructor watching us and his watch. I walked over and throttled it up. A pretty good bit. Still it ran. Time goes by and the instructor signaled to shut it off. HE says: "You win! Now take it apart and throw the parts back in the piles."

When an engine has a breather/pcv, the pcv side will always be a little dirtier because of the flow of gasses through the block (clean air in the breather, fumigatied air out the pcv).

Always always always check the oil dip stick and pull the plugs and see if it spins or you are buying a core and you are gonna have to put money into it. All depends how much from a gasket set to new everything it a crap shoot and all depends on what you find when you open the covers.

FYI GMT800s have an extra hole on the upper hood hinge just a couple inches from where the hood hinge pivots between the two parts. If you move the bolt that connects the lower hinge to the upper hinge, you can open the hood a lot further, and re install the bolt in that upper hole. This opens the hood much further and easier to remove engines etc

Put that hood in service mode. Google it dont have to take the hood off but it allows you to have it straight up and its not in the way!

Chevy have a service position for the hoods. Take the top bolts out and push the hood back farther and there is a notch to put a bolt it that holds the hood straight up for pulling motors out and more head room.

So, just pulled heads on my 08 gmc, the underside of the valve covers was identical. Drivers side was way messier than passenger. Must be the crankcase ventilation setup?
