Is CB Ramey's 1987 C4 Corvette the fastest streetable vette? Chris explains how to turn a C4 Corvette into a fire breathing monster at the season opener of Optima's Search for the Ultimate Street Car. Filmed at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
This autocross C4 Corvette is bad to the bone. 12.5" wide wheels front and back under the stock fenders, LS swapped 468" 650rwhp LS3 based motor and a whole bunch of aesthetic enhancements to boot. This is a seriously clean and fast car. There might be faster Corvettes out there but I doubt there is one faster that can still be driven on the street and looks this good inside and out.
Now kick them out of GTV! ha ha ha.

C4s are so underrated. In a world where people are paying 50k (!) for Acura Integra type rs, a nice c4 ican be had for 10k or so. If I had an extra garage spot I would SOOOOOO buy one...

I have a 1996 LT4 Car in Comp Yellow with 12,500 miles on it that I bought for 19k (Had 8500 miles on it when I bought it). This is a Targa, 6 Speed car that will hit 60 in under 5 seconds that will pull at least a G on the pad (Tires dependent) that will take 315s on all four corners WITHOUT sticking out. Oh yeah... plus it has 4 wheel independent suspension and a host of other features. This was a $90k car in '96 (Adjusted for inflation) that can be had in mint condition for a song and will BLOW the doors off an Integra Type R (and I like those cars). A 6 speed C4 is the bargain of the century. I am just glad that people were still sleeping on it when I got mine.

C4 Corvette went 29-0 against Porsche in SCCA racing. It was so dominant against the Euro and Japanese brands they band it. Roll your eyes when fanboy publishers talk about Corvette like they need to play.

I've got an 85 that I'm working on and this car really gave me something to compare to. Mines no where near this but it's great to see that a "stock suspension" is capable of this level of control especially factoring in the cars age. Totally subscribed!

the 85 is pretty good but the 84, while sucky because of the Crossfire, was way better in the handling department. I would put some Bilsteins on that 85 corvette

So there’s potential that a newer 88+ C4 could post better times because of the suspension geometry redesign which would theoretically improve the handling to improve lap times?

No. It has coil overs at all four corners.

Cool! What are the wheel hub offsets to fit the 305/19" wheels - were there any other mods made to front end for steering clearence with these big boys?

Depending on year, base C4s came with 275s stock all around. An extra little bit of diameter is unlikely to require much, especially since those 19" wheels are fitted with much lower profile tires. And, later C4s came with 285s in the rear stock. Consider that the ZR1 had 335s in the rear, but it was specifically a widebody for the purpose of fitment... I bet the 305s probably fit without any effort.

As an addendum, I have confirmed. It looks like those Are 305/30r19 size, which has an overall diameter size just 1/4" greater than the stock rear tires for later C4s, which were 285/40r17. Thus, overall tire diameter package isn't significantly changed, and the width isn't much greater than stock sizes. If anything, he might have some minor rubbing at full lock steering.

@@EagleScoutmanoZR1 came with 315, not 335 rears stock. But you can run 315 on a narrow body C4 because Grand Sport did just that. They simply added those little flares to the narrow body on the Grand Sport but the tires/wheels fit it just fine.

Chris isn't much for online stuff so I don't know of a build thread or a source for more pictures. I emailed him to ask him about the transmission.

He is using a HGT Precision sequential six-speed transmission with a custom, ladder-frame-mounted driveshaft from Randy’s Driveshaft Service in Houston.

That has to be pushing the borderline of almost too much power for the tire and suspension. It'll be an awesome car once he has a few more weekends to shake out the little gremlins like half shafts.

Oh and I’m not sure about the brakes. Given that it’s still the C4 uprights in the front and rear I can’t imagine it’s too exotic to install those calipers.

Custom upper shock mounts to convert it to coil overs. And until recently that was it. Recently he narrowed the rear trailing arms to try and add room for tire clearance.

I don’t trust those high spikes in the G meter but momentarily you can pull some really good G’s with these 200tw autocross focuses tores on a good car. Keep in mind magazine tests are sustained G’s which would be lower.

I've got a 85 I've been staring at for years doing nothing with in probably more than good condition fully loaded garage kept, I never thought you could get 700 out of the l98 lol wtf how is it a ls3 though 468ci

He isn't getting 700 hp out of an l98, since it's an LS3 block. However, they got over 800 hp out of turbo l98s back in the '80s...

@@EagleScoutmano btw i looked it up just now its 880 hp but idk if thats to the wheels or crank either way I was wrong about the 1/4 mile it would probably still run a low 11 My guess was close it ran a 10.6

@@NOOBNOOB007 yup, that's the one. My point was, even the L98 can form the basis for a seriously potent engine. Now, for me, I wouldn't want more than 500 hp, and considering that I currently have 300 ('95 LT1) crank hp, I have plenty of room to grow before I reach that limit... XD

@@EagleScoutmano i got dusted by a LT1 camaro in my ws6. I made the mistake of putting a 3.73 in it and it slowed It down so much idk what was wrong with it but I got gapped by a Walmart or 2.. The t/a had about 400 hp to the wheels

C4 with an L98 from 85 has a six liter with forged pistons stock. With a turbo and a cam you can have 600hp on 8psi of boost. And there like 1,400$ cars for some reason

AutoXandTrack Yea I love C4’s but I’m real picky about how they are done. I think the sleek look of it is part of why it hung around so long and still looked good. Everyone else was adding spoilers and airfoils but chevy decided to go against the grain and keep it simple.

First and foremost great Channel love the content but I know there's a couple cforce that are left off that are pretty damn fast the green machine is one of them always getting accused of having a big displacement LSX in it when it still original lt4 350 just rebuilt for high-compression. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4TcgaaPmLOders

This dudes car is heavily modified. Want to make a C4 handle on a road course. Must have a fat wallet and spend big bucks. Can't imagine what that carbon front end alone cost Stock they are way nose heavy And will never be as fast as a C5/6. Get a C5 or C6 if you want a road course car.

Bone stock they are 50/50 weight distribution. Get your facts straight. Only the ZR1, with all the added weight of the LT5, is somewhat nose-heavy, and even that's not much (nothing like most Mustangs, Camaros, and other pony-cars). Also, the C4 isn't a slouch for handling- it pulled 0.9 Gs in the 1980s, on rubber manufactured in the '80s. A switch to modern high-grip tires alone will pull it up to 1+ G on the skidpad. However, the one major flaw of the C4 vs the later C5/C6 is that the C4 has a LOT more body flex, something that desperately needs addressed to increase its performance, and especially driver's confidence in said performance.
