It's a send off every day of the week. I have no doubt he didn't mean to hit Walshy's head and he got it wrong but it was dangerous and as much as I hate seeing QLD win, he had to go. We were watching it at the pub and me and my mate both said straight away, he's gone and that's the game. We only stayed because the beers were cold.

Blues fan here: Gordy is absolutely correct. Sua'ali'i is responsible for aiming at the upper half of the chest. These players are professionals and they know that there's always a chance that the attacker slips at the final moment. Let it be a lesson to aim lower and smash players legally like Liam Martin did

That's the problem, he did aim for the chest. Joseph is 6 foot 5. They slowed down the footage and Reece started slipping. If you've played you know you don't have enough time ro readjust if a player starts to fall. If a taller player was at fullback its tackle of the century. Unfortunately another reason NRL will probably be non contact or close to it by 2040.

There was a game plan to rock Walsh. A rookie, charged up by the emotion of the big stage. The moment presented Suaalii with an opportunity to fulfil that assignment and lay him out. A few centimetres lower he would have had a potential game-turning moment in NSW's favour + he would have a highlight reel for the ages again in favour of Suaalii, and potentially put fear in Walsh. However, he got it wrong and shouldered Walsh's head in a flying motion, Full stop. It is a game of inches. A heavy price to pay to achieve one assignment.

Agreed. Never before have I seen a player targeted with borderline dirty tactics as much as Walsh has. Obviously a good game plan involves shutting down your opposition key players but because Walsh is too quick and elusive for most of the league, they then resort to late hits to nullify that, also not unheard of, but when that could lead to possible career ending injuries and long term damage, thats a step too far. Thats a send off every day.

I dont get the point from Braith: "Protect the Bread > Protect the player" - It would be regular for opposing teams to target best player on the opposition if this would be the case. (Imagine if Cleary got tackled mid air and dropped to his head) - Career ending injuries awaits players who play in Origin. - Best Players from NRL wont be allowed by their clubs to play origin due to the possibility of this head knocks and season-ending/ career-ending disabilities. - Rugby which is the bread will die if this will be the case. - Greatest sport should be played clean and penalties like sent off was there to make sure that the game remains the greatest sport.

I think it is a bit of both mate. If you don't protect the brand you will no longer have a game to play. If you don't protect the players you will no longer have a brand. Sualli got a grade 2 which usually is a sin bin offence grade 3 are usually send off's. The match review committee has obviously taken into consideration that reece slipped, and his intended target was his chest. If he didn't slip that tackle would have been replayed all day today, like the liam Martin 1. Big hits are our highlights reel. Go watch the Vegas promo. Besides that, I agree they need a 10-20 min bin but replaced by someone else to at least make it 13v13. Yes, reece was out of the game, but they got the 18th man. They are getting stricter, and that's fine, but they need to find a way that the game also doesn't suffer.

@@QLDER85 The short of it: Sualii is inexperienced, meant to hurt, meant to shoulder charge, but didn't mean to kill, miscalculated and hit Reece high. Charged out of line = Reckless. Got him in head, knocked Reece out. Send off. If Reece got up straight away, sin bin, or if Sualii wrapped the arms, sin bin.......but a combination of factors made that a send off. He didn't try to kill him, he just tried to hurt him enough so that he wouldn't be a threat. A good old rib tickler. But it went wrong. I'm a QLD fan and I can see that. BUT.....and here's the big but (and it cannot lie) Sualii lined him up, he charged and absolutely polaxed Reece in the head.......It went wrong, but it was reckless......not to mention, he didn't make any attempt to wrap the arms.....it was meant to be a shoulder charge to the ribs........but because of how Reece plays (he dips when he passes and slipped) Sualii being a young and inexperienced player probably didn't take that into account, he hit him in the head, Reece was knocked out as a result. Send off all day long.

Anasta is right, the game was ruined, was the send off right? yes it was, I think the NRL needs to look at something like Union, where a send off is permanent for the player being sent, and then are able to bring on one of the interchange players after 20mins to replace the sent off player, however, they are NOT allowed to activate the 18th man, and lose a player out of the interchange rotation, that way they are still being penalised as then fatigue will be more of a factor......

So you’re saying it should be ruled on potential injuries? There’s been afew players that have died over the last 6 years in a pre season nrl training so there for should nrl ban all pre season training? The game focuses so much on the defenders maybe they should start making coaches teach players how to pass and attack up right because that would play a huge part in stopping concussion also. Shoulder charge targeting the head it's send off sorry NSW supporters .Slipping is not excuse if you watch how Walsh was passing the ball he was bending his body to make the pass as soon the ball left his hands Joseph hit him late. I understand that the NSW team wanted to reduced Walsh effect on the game to minimum but most players with exception of Crichton are not able to tackle properly when playing at center and this is been part of the problem in NRL for very long time the players who are real centers few and most play and can represent NSW. NSW lost due to bad decision by player and coaching staff to play agressive defense .

I agree that tackle should be a send-off, but we can't overlook the fact that people (myself included) stopped watching the game after that decision. This will flow onto viewer numbers being down in the next two games, which will affect sponsors and make them decrease the value of their sponsorship in the following seasons. This then flows down to dollars for the game. That decision, even if it was the correct one, will have a far greater impact on the sport than we think

I feel sorry for Suaali, but when you look at his arms going into the tackle, they’re both down by his sides. In Rugby Union, that’s an illegal tackle no matter what happens to the other player, but if that incident happened in a Union game, it would be a send off because not only was contact made with the shoulder to the head, but there was no tackling motion from the arms. I don’t watch much Union these days because of the time wasting at breakdowns, but once upon a time a red card was a send off. If that’s changed, I think it’s a fair bet that there are now three stages; yellow card-10 minutes, redd card-20 minutes, and send off-the team loses a man for the remainder of the game. I don’t see why Origin rules should be less strict than regular games where head injuries are concerned. I feel for the Blues, but let’s remember when Teddy has been creamed in regular games and when Paps was laid out a couple of years ago. This may have been unavoidable, but the tackler left his feet and kept his arms pinned to his sides and led with his shoulder, so it’s very hard to make a case for no intent under those circumstances. Really unfortunate incident all round, because as a Queensland supporter, I would have rather watched the game with 13 on 13. The Blues would have been a handful, as we saw from their effort in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. I don’t think there’s any danger of fans switching off because of this kind of ruling. Anyone who thinks it should only be ten is just not thinking straight. In boxing, if a man is knocked unconscious, it’s often the end of the bout. I don’t see why knocking someone out through carelessness shouldn’t mean that team loses a man for the rest of the game.

I agree with Buzz's points on player safety, and it does cast a negative light on the game. However, considering the expectations set for Origin games, which are marketed as being a notch above regular club matches, the dismissal could be seen as excessive. People have created traditions around the game, the fans' reaction is a direct result of the "State against State", "Mate against Mate", "Harder hits" narrative that's been pushed. If the rules don't evolve with the game, we risk losing the audience's interest.

The player is sent from the field but can be replaced. NSW is still a man short on the bench. The other thing they must consider is the welfare of the other players. Playing a man short raises the risk of injury for the team playing short. Plus, having the origin match over after 8 minutes is not a good look.

A good adjustment to the send off rule would be. The player who commits the send off offence cannot play the rest of the game and the team has to play with 12 men for 20 minutes ( Effectiely a 20 minute sin bin). After the 20 minutes you can have 13 again but you will effectively only have 16 players now, so 3 on the bench rather than 4. No 18th man activation because you shouldnt be compensated for foul play. This way entire games cannot be so heavily dictated by a send off, yet its still enough of a deterant for future offenders and provides fair compensation for the victimised team.

Think about it though, you could theoretically (not saying they will) get someone to go out and seriously injure Cleary, DCE, Munster, etc and have them off for the rest of the game, but after 20 minutes you're back to 18? So either NSW/QLD loses an important half back/five eigth/full back and the ones who committed the offence only lose a winger/centre/second row/front row, heck I'd take that trade any day of the week. No way that should happen, if you commit an illegal offence you and your team pay for it by going down to 12 for the rest of the game.

How does celebration factor into it? The play had moved on, there was no time to celebrate. I have been collectively punished, dont you worry. However, in a team sport, the team is both an individual entity and a collection of people. The team has a common goal and strategy to achieve said goal - you must punish the team as well as the individual.

@@michaelolofsson8558 "No time to celebrate"? Wow you know someone/teams intentions? Yes..they where gunning for him but also yes its a contact sport..accidents happen..feel bad for the dude but when you sign up for a heavily contact sport, expect heavy contact.. Collective punishment doesn't make people feel bad for what they did it just makes a "them vs us" mob mentality, where people form groups..Punishment should be dealt to the individual, otherwise it ruins the game for all..Thanks for the back and forth 😅

For me, the key areas are the safety of players, the paying customers, and maintaining an element of fair competition. I agree it's a send off, Gordon makes a strong argument. The Red Card 20 minute one less player and replacement and no activating the 18th man with strong stand-down period 8 min to 12 max weeks for offending player should be action enough that allow the game to still be competitive and appease the paying customers too. I am a born and raised NZ rugby man but NRL is highly entertaining and super competitive that the players create and the decision makers can only try their best and not kill the game doing it. State of Origin is a fantastic brand.

Typical NSW Supporter comment, I guarantee if it was a QLD player who did that to Teddy, you would be calling for blood lol. He Fucked up, smashed him in the head, knocked him cold, easy Send off case closed. You can't make contact with the head that's the rules, his feet left the ground, shoulder hit his head and snapped it backwards. You lost deal with it. 😂

A tackling player can’t use his/her shoulder and/or upper arm without, at the same time, using both of his arms to tackle. That has been a rule in place since 2012 I believe. Joe did not legitimately tackle Reese - head high or not.
