The two biggest issues for NSW is just how much better the QLD spine is and it doesn't solve NSW's issue of scoring more points when it matters. Last year, they had no trouble making metres, they had trouble with creativity and a player like Edwards lacks creativity. I love ya Gal but Gus is 100% right on this one. NSW has always relied on players with a good reputation from the past or players who are highly praised and are the faces of the game. NSW has never picked players based on current form, something which QLD has done for many years now, people looked at QLD’s team on paper and laughed when they compared them to the NSW squad in regard to talent, and looked what happened when they got called the “worst QLD team of all time and the previous two years. Freddy was never a coach, he is a media personality or “one of the boys” as they say that is mates with all the players and was loyal to certain players regardless of their current form. Madge is a hard head similar to the likes of Benett and Bellamy who isn’t afraid to make the tough decisions, he is there to win an Origin series not win a popularity contest, and nothing is shocking about this team he picked, every player has been consistent for their team. Teddy is past his prime and is aging, Edwards was only unlucky from missing out the previous two years because Freddy was coach, he is a weapon and a champion player who always puts his body on the line, nothing shocking about picking a player that is part of the most successful modern NRL team, this team is looking toward the future not relying on past players.

@carokann4397 It does matter because of how the rest of the team is built... Someone can be a good player but a poor fit, and that is what Edwards is in that team (Teddy also is). Based on their team composition, they need someone at the back with creativity. Someone like Drinkwater has 14 try assists to Edwards 8 and 17 linebreak assists to Edwards 7. He does that in a team with a half who is also top 5 in those numbers (townsend) and a five eight who was just chosen for origin. Edwards is a better defender and better for metres, but metres are enough where NSW have struggled.
