Fencer here. Saber snap cut with a stick is what I used to to win the only Kali tournament I ever did. It's a witik but given more like a jab in boxing on what you call vertical line. Targeted hands and head. Did this with good evasive footwork, a few roof blocks and some abanico high/low whenever I managed to snake my opponents arm after a point down roof block ( prime in modern saber). The format was with wekaf armor but allowed kicks. One of the guys I took out was a muay thai guy, who wasn't so kicky after witiks to the soft part of his legs every time he tried to kick me. They even gave me a trophy with a representation of the typical wekaf head gear and crossed sticks on it. Despite having won or medalled in over 50 fencing competitions, a few national and one international and never met my match in stick sparring with anybody (I have looked and tried in my part of the world) , I have much respect for FMA and the people who practice it because inutively I know they are practicing something closer to a real fight than what sport fencing has become but I feel the whole wekaf scene has gone away from the core and the dog brother's stuff although argubably closer to the core, has some artificialities. Get rid of the masks and hockey gloves. Give them sharp knives for their nondominant hands and you will see the real stick fighter. That said, I enjoy your channel and your excellent content. Thanks for your great work.

Fast snappy strikes are what I practice the most when I engage in my weekly Kali training

I'm seeing a lot of similarities to SCA armored technique. Primary difference is in SCA the rattan is thicker and longer (heavier) and there's usually a shield to get around. We also require edge alignment (to a degree) for a blow to count.

This is a good version of kali training! And it used to be that you had to go to someone in person to see Philippine stick fighting or training at all!

Kali is one of the few styles that look smoother than Kung fu and reminds me of the showdown between Dan Inosanto and Bruce Lee in Game of Death! Even Lee winds up using Kali!
@mikewelch26293 жыл бұрын
Also a lot of Ed Parkers Kenpo guys, Inosanto and Lee were connected to that to but they all study Kali!

Actually sir abaniko is one of my base technique. Thank you for the recognition of the technique. However some instructors are asking me not to use it in sparring.

In HEMA we call the horizontal watik a zwerchhau and the vertical watik a schitelhau. Both of which are staple techniques for both one and two-handed swords.

I’m an old man, retired and recovering from disability. I’m interested in integrating kali into cane work. I walk a lot. Usually in nice places but things are getting rougher. Can I adapt your training to a walking stick?

Yes, you can absolutely adapt this training to cane work.
@zaberfang3 жыл бұрын
Indeed it can.
@niledunn46413 жыл бұрын
It works excellent for a cane, it's actually alot more practical as it's alot easier to disguise the techniques and not draw attention

If you're in the USA invest in a quality combat handgun training program and I suggest a Glock 19 9mm, 124 gr. jacketed hollow point rounds. You are just going to get your walking stick taken from you and beat up.

Hey Paul, Are there any reverse grip kali stick techniques?🤔
@kevincopeland9353 жыл бұрын
There's a man who has 2 videos of reverse grip stick fighting, but he's doing Korean things. Look up videos on Jun Sa Do. I don't think it would be called Kali, but you could add that to your techniques in case that's how you end up
@johndepalm41803 жыл бұрын
@@kevincopeland935 thanks, I actually own that Jun sa do video you're talking about. Thought kali might have that too.😉
@kevincopeland9353 жыл бұрын
@@johndepalm4180 where I practice they teach techniques like choke holds & A couple things in reverse grip, but no sinawali patterns. Using a single stick for a reverse grip would be like holding like a bolo in ice pick grip which can be done
@johndepalm41803 жыл бұрын
@@kevincopeland935 I encountered someone that did a reverse grip kali technique, at least that's what it was called, and I thought there was more because it really took me by surprise when performed.

is Edge Alignment not that important when you doing the watiks?
@esgrimaxativa51753 жыл бұрын
I'd say yes and no. It's a stick so you can and probably should use any and every part of it to hit with. If not caring about edge alignment allows you to go faster for multiple hits with the stick, I'd say go for it but if your weapon is a machete like object than no.
@davidhumphrey23163 жыл бұрын
Is it a block or a strick. Or both.

It may not look like it, but even those "light" flicks can hurt when it hits. Could you show means to defend against the usual MMA techniques?
