Would it practically also be wise if I were to get a Bachelors in Business Admin instead of any of the science majors and take the science pre reqs along the way? The reason I wanted to ask this is because this is another alternative route of mine as a backup plan if things don't go well, like not getting accepted in any pt schools the first time I apply. Plus I want to save time if I ever change my mind for good reasons to move onto another career with a business degree if I ever change my mind to commit again for applying to pt schools the following year and so on.... I have had a head start back in high school with taking anatomy/physiology and also a sports medicine class. Im also a fitness enthusiast with the healthy lifestyle like you are :)

SoCal_AKL well first off.. you WILL get accepted the first time of around. Be confident in your intellect and drive. Second, I think that would be a fantastic idea to do that. Students don’t HAVE TO be science majors/kinesiology majors in order to be successful in dpt school. I have a lot of classmates who are great and they were not science based. I think it would absolutely help you because it give you an introduction into what you are going to get yourself into, give you that science background/studying mentality, and able to learn science concepts. But I think it would be great to also have a business admin background too. I think if I majored in that and got into dpt school, I would be way more successful in my business since I would have more knowledge in it. I SAY GO FOR IT!!!!

Just found your profile and am super excited, loved the video!! Exactly the kind of information I know a lot of people are looking for :). But I have a question I was hoping to get your take on. I just finished up my first year at community college and I was thinking about taking all the required prerequisite courses while I an here at community to save money and so when I transfer to a 4 year I just take the upper division major classes and then get that degree and apply to a dpt program. I am concerned that some programs may look down on me taking the classes at a community college instead of the university though, whats your opinion? Thanks in advance
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Zack! Really appreciate you dropping by and finding value for your journey to DPT!!! I would actually have preferred to go that route if I could go back in time - to save money. Colleges don’t really care that you took your courses at a CC, as long as they are fulfilling the pre-req requirements needed for their program (ex: most programs require “general bio + lab”. If you take the “fundamental bio + lab” course, that may not fulfill the requirements that the dpt program wants. I would call to double check if the course you’re going to take will check that requirement) Taking courses from a CC, does NOT devalue the course. They keep the same standard as the courses at a university. If I could go back, I would take my pre-reqs at a CC and transfer to a university to finish my upper div/major requirements. Then apply to dpt school. Just like how you mentioned! Glad I could help! Let me know if you have more questions 😇

Hi, Just stumbled across your page and I've been watching a lot of your videos lately to prepare for my applications soon! I'm a senior at CSUF plan on applying to PT school this summer or next summer. I was wondering if you knew what the specific stats course that APU requires? Alex Villela what up Alex! no worries about an older video, I try to answer all comments on my page, no matter how old! Yeah bro of course I could give you some pointers, I remember I was in a similar position. I would start by researching your top 10 DPT programs that you’re interested in. Check in the same state, then out of state. Compare prices and also different perks of the program. Then check out what prerequisites are required (each program has different prerequisites but a lot of courses overlap; like bio, chem, physics) I would recommend the tips I mentioned in this video and make a spread sheet so you could be most efficient with your time. As far as major goes, have you seen this video I made? BEST MAJOR FOR DPT SCHOOL kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5Csnn-Dn7BliLs but honestly... I still think Kinesiology/exercise science the best major. And I say this because this major will teach you the foundations needed for dpt school. There is no other major out there that are so aligned with the fundamental concepts needed for human movements. And if anyone tells your bio or psychology is a good route for that... I call BS on that. Yeah... it’s a common major for dpt school, but with that major you get introduced to so many similar concepts that you will build on in PT school; unlike microbiology or abnormal psychology... lol or something like that. Lastly, in early 2020 , I’m coming out with a cheap ebook that will cover “everything you need to know to get into DPT school” I would highly recommend you take interest in that. I know it will provide you so much value. Thanks for your support Alex and I’ll just say welcome to the coolest career in the world.

What is your take on a 3+3 DPT program? How does it compare to the normal route where you receive your bachelors degree and go on to receive your DPT?
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 5 жыл бұрын
Rowen what’s up Rowen! Thanks for your comment. I think if you are certain in knowing you want to be a DPT, then I would 100% go for the 3/3 program. If I had that certainty that I have now, back when I was 18, I would have done that path. However, I feel like undergraduate is a season in life where students are figuring out who they are; their identity; their career. And that takes time. It actually took me about 5 years to realize who I was and what exactly I wanted to do. So I don’t regret it at all, but if I already had knew... why not save an year or 2 and get your dpt quicker you know?

What do you think about getting a nursing degree first and then move into physical therapy
@drjustinleedpt
@drjustinleedpt 5 жыл бұрын
IZ 50 I think getting a nursing degree is actually financially smarter than getting a DPT. You only need a BSN to be a nurse and the payout is actually pretty good!! Getting a DPT costs a lot and 3 more years of school. And.... the pay after getting a DPT isn’t actually as good as you think it might be. I think if you want to go nursing, then stick with that. But if you wanna do PT, then go that route. Merging the paths is definitely possible. Like... if you went BSN and did that while going to school, that actually might work out because you’ll be getting paid pretty good on the side. But...... it is a lot of schooling too because you’ll need extra courses in addition to your nursing curriculum to fulfill the prerequisites

rug rat as long as they have a in person lab you should be fine. But you should double check two things. 1. Hi Dr. Lee, thank you so much for the video. We live in Northern Cali. My high school 10th grade son is very interested in sport and fitness and wants to become a physical therapist. He is also interested in Neurobiology. His dream colleges are UCI, UCLA, and UCB. We have done some research in choosing a major like Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Psychology, Human Biology, Neurobiology, Biochemistry, and Physiology. Unfortunately, none of the UCs offers Kinesiology, so I am guessing Physiology is very similar to it. Would you please tell me which one of the above majors would be a perfect major for DPT? I know USC has a very good physical therapy program; can my son transfer there for their DPT program after earning a BS from one of the UCs? How many years are required in DPT? But, every university has their own names for it. So for my undergrad major, I was able to take fundamental and have it cover for my requirement. But that fundamental level did not cover my prereq Hope that helps!!!

You can definitely take them from a community college! Just make sure that you are looking specifically at if the class you take can be eligible to fulfill the prerequisite course. I am currently going to graduate with my BS in Kinon Spring 2020. With the number of classes I have to take, I plan to take some after graduation in community college and get more experience before applying. Some schools require a lot of reference letters, how do you go about getting all the letters, but not getting too overwhelmed working in different places?
@drjustinleedpt

Heck yeah Monica! Congrats on graduating, you're almost there!!!!!!! What an exciting time! I think you have an awesome plan and that you should feel very proud to be on this grind towards dpt school. I love how you have a plan, and that you're executing it! Ill be making a video on this! but for now I can answer your question (: Every program requirements may be different. Some require 2 or 3 and some of them ask for 1 or 2 PT recs. You have to do your research on making sure that you are checking off the requirements for what schools you are looking into. When it comes to letters, you want to make sure that you ask people that KNOW YOU. (this is super important*). This is because whoever is writing your letter is going to vouch for you, boast about you, and say what a great fit you will be for a PT program. Imagine if the person you asked did not know you on a personal level, it would be so difficult or even fake to write good things about you. If you cannot think of something at this time, I recommend looking for someone you "click with" and just ask them up front, "Hey im applying to DPT schools in about an year and I really think you would be a great fit to write my letter of rec when it's time. Would you be willing to write me one?" Ill get into details about it in my video, but i hope this helps for now! What schools are your graduating from, and where are you thinking of applying?

For the science courses chemistry and physics after you took them for your re-reqs do you still deal with them during the program ? Meaning once you take them to fulfill the prereqs and get into the program is it passed you and now you don't deal with them again or will you still need them to get through dpt school ? I ask this because I don't really remember the material in those subjects and those subjects were honestly very tough for me. Also this may be a dumb question but in your school requirements it says 1 year of chemistry and physics, that means both Gen Chem 1 AND 2, and physics 1 And 2 ? Or just Gen Chem 1 And physics 1 is enough ? Thanks man Btw Im in the Pasadena area so I'm not to far from AP
