As we navigate through the transformative journey of Ramadan, we are reminded of the inherent openness of our religion and its profound capacity to uplift and recenter us. Yet, in the midst of this age of imbalance, where anxiety and depression afflict many in modern societies, it becomes imperative for us to utilise this blessed time - notably marked by its social aspects - to extend our care towards those who find themselves isolated or marginalised within our communities.

I feel your pain bro. I’ve struggled with the loneliness of not having a community all my life. Alhamdullah for my few Muslim friends. But then I moved to Turkey in 2013 and the loneliness is profound. Now when I go back to London to catch up with friends I feel lonely there too! Allah tests 😂 where about an are you based? They’ve got the Cambridge Crescent which is a good group for converts I hear. They’ve also got the İhsan mosque in Norwich - lots of converts there.

*Brothers and sisters please pray Allah for me (and my younger sister, too). I guess im too much sinner that i cannot pray salat even though i want to so much. I just cant get myself up. And i was thanking Allah that at least i can fast during Ramadan, and now im sick for 5 days and i cannot fast either. As if Allah doesnt accept anything from me. Please pray for me when you break your fast, please*

I’m 35 and I’ve fasted every Ramadan since I can remember, but this Ramadan I feel has taken an heavy toll on my mental health, I feel more sensitive than ever, I’m all of a sudden feeling more depressed than anything, when trying to convey my feelings to close ones they don’t realise what I’m trying to say… am I the only one feeling this? I’ve been praying for this to all go away.

Usually, anxiety occurs when something in your body is unregulated. It could be physical or emotional or physiological. Fasting is in a sense "depriving" your body and brain of essential nutrients The body goes into a state of anxiety because your daily input of food and fluid is perceived as not being available. This creates a form of stress in your body. Essential bodily processes slow down to compensate for the perceived deprivation, so for example, you feel tired, your energy levels drop, and your ability to focus and absorb information. It's a tough one because if your body needs to get to an equilibrium, it might mean that you don't fast, which then creates a sense of guilt. What helps me manage a similar situation is to think of the Almighty as he is, forgiving and compassion. In the end you have to make the decision to do what you need. Make sure to increase your fluid intake, ideally not caffeinatwd drinks and increase your protein input and decrease your carbohydrate intake

Salam to everyone in the comment struggling with some sort of anxiety and depression at this time of the year. I hope what I share can be of some help, because guess what? I am 10 weeks free of my antidepressant, after 13 years. Yes, that is a very long time and so unhealthy. And definitely not easy.. many long term side effects I am experiencing. But Ramadan could not have come at a better month! (It helps me to stay focus on what's essential) And let me share what I wished I had known then, and what helped. Two major things: 1- Your physical effort: Get your body supplemented with Magnesium Glycinate. Do your research as well or ask a pharmacist. Take them at night or once before bed, once during sahoor depending on your needs. In short, this type of Magnesium helps with your nervous system, moods and calms the mind. For me, I only see results after taking it consistently for 2 weeks. Because this isn't a drug/medication, this is a supplement that our body naturally produce and needs. Sometimes it can be low for too long, that we need to supplement it ourselves. That said, also be mindful of your gut's health. Poor stomach health affects mood too, because then you're not absorbing the nutrients or vitamins that helps with mood regulation. Get good sleep too. 2- Your spiritual effort = Strengthen your spiritual connection with Allah. Feel very sad? Cry to Allah (like really, cry.. crying is a healing process, it releases some stress chemicals too. SubhanAllah.) in your night prayers alone and then tell your heart "HasbunAllah wa nikmal wakeel" believe that, repeat that in your mother tongue so you know what you've said. And keep building that trust in what you pray for. My advice is also, when very low, don't waste the energy to explain or share your hardships with people who cannot understand you or empathise with you. It's tiring, then you feel worse. Nobody will understand what's really in your heart other than The Maker of it Himself. Without a word spoken, He knows. I feel that crying to Him and focusing on my du'a at the time, helps.. a whole lot better. I don't feel alone, and I don't feel the need to explain, I know He knows. And I leave it to His mercy. Pray for strength and patience. InshaAllah, you may feel still low but you don't succumb to losing hope, you'll find it that you always have that little strength left to always persevere. And your perspective will change... I suffered so long, from many factors and mostly due to health and the heavy middle child syndrome who sponged up a lot of things. But I know all of you, can come through, if you try this and really at the same time believe you can count on Allah to help you, while you help yourself with what is within your capacity. Exercises or taking a walk is good too. And don't forget, do one good deed especially when you feel low, give charity even if it's as small as feeding a stray animals or drop a fiver in a charity box. Take time away from people if it's too much, spend that time with your Creator instead. May Allah give you all shifa and perseverance.. Ameen. Take care everybody. Allah will not test you more than you can bear, remember 🌹

Beautiful reflection. How to come to terms with facts that mental illness ( clinical anxiety/ depression ) also creation of Allah- and not just modernization ailments? Those that are absolutely grateful to Allah- may still have that clinical condition. Does mental health challenges (especially when sufferer’s have sabr as well) expunge any sins in this world and is rewarded? Asking above respectfully for better understanding of our Dean . It is interesting how many traditions have a 9th month for observances and renewal. It is important to know the primitive side of things. It is important to remember that voluntary and recommended prayers are best said outside the masajid, but mosques should have eclipse and the Prayer of Pauses in Ramadan. Memorization isn't just for better ritual performance, but to structure a life when the sources are not available.

All Muslim rituals is to strengthen the believers to stand-up against the tyrants. If they do not stand-up. I is an evidence that their Ibadat are not accepted. In Al-Jamal war both sides prayed at the same time, but ALLAH said One side is Kafer, the other Moumen. Surah 2/253 Our Muslims are literally slaughtered by the biggest enemy of Muslims al-Yahood, where most of the countries Jordan Egypt gulf Turkey are aiding the Zeions In Ramadan while the are fasting
