There are two things that concern me regarding Coronavirus and nutrition: 1. The role of ACE2 and how it affects the infection rate. Should we avoid natural ACE inhibitors such as Hibuskus Tea in order to keep the ACE2 levels low? 2. The role of anti-inflammatory drugs and how it affects the infection rate. Should we avoid natural anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric in order to reduce our risk of severe infection?

I’m a bit confused Dr G! I thought in your last videos about fasting you said it wasn’t a good thing? There are so many cardiologists popping up now on KZbin and they’re touting the benefits of low carb keto. Am I the only one that thinks if the evidence is so strong for a plant based diet, why are there doctors going against it?

Hello! I have two questions! Was it water fast only? & Every time I check my blood pressure it’s somewhere around 130/90 or 140/90. I’m in my 20s and have been trying to eat more Whole Foods and cut out processed and sugars but I sometimes “treat” myself.. do you think “treating” myself is keeping it from going down? Sorry for the questions. I’m just so tired of never having normal blood pressure. My bp used to be normal before I had a kid!

Dr. Greger. I once carried out a 14 day water only fast with some potassium/salt added to prevent heart arrythmia. I lost -25 lbls. I will comment on the taste bud theory however, I broke my fast with a piece of watermelon and it was so phenomenal I had to put it down because it was the sweetest thing I'd ever tasted, too sweet in fact! My insulin resistance totally reset and after consuming my pieces of watermelon it felt like every cell in my body was bursting with energy. I have never replicated that feeling again.

At 55 I was diagnosed with late onset diabetes. Medical intervention. Oral drugs. Condition continued to worsen. Injection. Condition continues to deteriorate. Increase injection levels, continue to deteriorate. Nerve damage, eyesight damage ... more drugs and getting worse. Gave up on the doctors and medical industry. They simply were making a fortune off my condition. Now I 30 hour fast twice a week. I eat without heavy sugars, and much less meat. (I still love a good steak and mashed potatoes with gravy once in a while!) My sugar on average is down to a safe level. It still gets as high as 190 occasionally, but comes down after a single 24 hour fast. My weight came down to a recommended level, my energy is up, my attitude is up, my endurance is up, my cognitive abilities are up, my BP is down and food tastes so much better! I used to love sugary drinks like Pepsi, now it all tastes like diet soda, and I simply do not care for the taste! Good riddance. If you are a diabetic, you really need to do yourself a favor and get into this fasting science! Just remember, your Doc will lose a fortune, so he might try to talk you out of it! I am 65 now, and wish I knew this at 55! It was not easy to do, but the reward is well worth the effort!

I don't have a tool to measure my bloodpressure, but my puls sank so far, that I had a puls in my sleep down to 44 bpm. It was also my kickstarter to erase added fats and salt from my self prepared dishes, which is why I just in time came back with my HNTD Cookbook (need to buy some missing herbs to replace salted mixed spices, and still looking for a local source for misopaste) and whole food plant based no-fat cookbook from Dr. Bracht and others.

Avoiding salt/sodium is VERY key here.....the aspect of this that I find interesting is.....is it the fasting that lowers blood pressure or the lack of consuming SALT for 10 to 11 days??? I do wonder if they did a study of people who had high blood pressure and they simply fed them a salt free or low sodium diet if their blood pressure would also go down......somehow, I think it would and that fasting isn't really the reason why people's blood pressure goes down.......its more of what you eat and drink.....there is also something very basic to consider here as well.....blood pressure is just that ....PRESSURE......when you dehydrate yourself or don't eat......you lose pressure or blood pressure.....so of course it goes down......when you eat or drink something, then your blood pressure should go up......I equate it to a flat tire......food and drink into your system is similar to pumping air into a tire will low pressure......

@@Codswallop58 Hypertension meds are offered for free by pharmacies like Publix. But you'd just about need to get a loan from the bank to go to someplace like True North Health Center. People would obviously rather get cured and not need meds. But I'm just pointing out that it's financially out of reach for most people. Especially the poor, who are disproportionately affected... Also, to use your example, stroke rehab is probably reimbursed by insurance or financed by charity for the poor who have no issuance. I don't see True North Health Center doing that. The problem is we have a sick-care system that is more interested in share prices and profits for big pharma. And insurance is a racket that makes money by paying less than it receives. They're not going to want to pay for expensive in patient fasting cures, even if it is better for their client's long term health. It doesn't make sense from a short term or long term business perspective. (Their bottom line) Also, they and their friends can make much more money from your lifetime sickness.

@@gojuniho4749 I'm not confused. You're oversimplifying a complex problem. I've read many of the works of Dr. Fuhrman and some the hygienists before him. And even they would acknowledge what you are not. Some people shouldn't fast and some should only do so under the supervision of a trained physician. You should speak with a trained physician about whether fasting is appropriate for your situation. If supervised fasting is appropriate, it is extraordinarily expensive. Weekly lodging at True North Health Center can cost around $3,000, not including lab costs and examination fees, which are even more expensive. That's simply unaffordable for most people.

Really interesting stuff! Some of the benefits of fasting can be really powerful! I like the approach of a "kickstart" per se into a healthier, plant-based approach. Extended fasting like that definitely has to be supervised, and I suggest if you plan on doing more than 24 hours, work with someone. That's what I tell those who I work with. There is some evidence intermittent fasting can help with microbiome diversity IF you then follow and WFPB approach, and not going back to processed, refined foods. Really good information!

Vincent Esposito, MS, DC could you give some scenarios in which a healthy person might need medical supervision? I’m genuinely curious. What are the risks if one is not supervised?
@drvincentesposito
@drvincentesposito 4 жыл бұрын
@@alcyonae For sure! Now for context, I am going to be referring to fasting as 24+ hour fasts. So really quickly, off the top of my head one of the major ones is compromised gut health. If you have issues, prolonged fasting could actually make the problem worse. Often this has to do with killing off bacteria is the gut by starving them out, but this is not specific. This means it can kill good gut bugs along with bad ones, which generally does not end well from a diversity standpoint. Microbiome diversity ideally should be high. Poor gut microbiome diversity is associated with a variety of different negative health conditions. Most often (anecdotally) this can lead to food sensitivities, for example, becoming more severe. You have to find out what is causing that in the first place, and then treat it appropriately to fix those issues. I also would not suggest it if you were pregnant or a child. Now, I'm not bashing fasting whatsoever, we actually did a podcast episode on it discussing the benefits and the precautions you might want to take. I'll link that here: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/intermittent-fasting-ep-44/id1451308876?i=1000466005015 Additionally for context, I perform time-restricted eating on a regular basis. The occasional 12-16 hour fast from food gives our bodies a chance to “reset” in a way. It gives our bodies a chance to rest from digestion, and remove any waste products or bad bacteria that might have built up. With this in mind, it could be beneficial to adopt intermittent fasting for 2-4 days per week. Fasting for 12-16 hours a day will allow certain survival hormones to activate, and you will begin to use your own body fat as fuel. I prefer time restricted eating to prolonged fasting generally, as you get most of, if not all, the benefits without going to that much of an extreme.

Vincent Esposito, MS, DC thank you for the reply. So the main concern is destroying gut bacteria. I’ve attempted several water fasts, but I can’t go beyond 6 days because of palpitations. I normally have low-ish blood pressure, and my heart rate during water fasts gets very unstable. The slightest movement makes my heart race painfully fast. I’ve been told to supplement with salt or other minerals, never found the right balance. So as soon as I get scared, I give up. Still, I love fasts because they reset me mentally, emotionally, and physically. I’m in a normal BMI range by the way, without any medical conditions.

I wonder if this has to do with homocystine levels decreasing. Homocystine is a huge factor in blood pressure. When you fast, you take all the inflammation out of the body, therefore homocystine levels are decreasing which is ultimately relaxing the vasculature.

Maybe I am just strange. Water fasted 5 days of radiation and still got burned...healing so much quicker now that I am fasting. I have done 23 days on water before so not really worried and also a 27 day juice fast. Will probably transition to juices then raw food and end up on WFPB with minimal SOS.

@@eelkeaptroot1393 the modern approach to the side effects question is this -- Does the benefit outweigh the risk? Also, the listing of side effects is a legal condition, not necessarily a moral one. If you listen to or read the list they use the words may, can, and will. When they're doing a double-blind patient trial, the patient's keep a journal of how they felt. Did anything happen during the day after taking the medication? If they so much as had a headache it is legally required to be listed as a "may" cause headaches. If a significant number of trial participants experience headaches, it is listed as a "can" cause headaches. If near 100% of the participants list headaches, then it is a known but unintended side effect and "will" cause headaches. This does not cover adverse reactions which are unknown and unintended side effects such as an allergic reaction to a component of the drugs. Long answer to what you would think is a simple question, but there it is.

Fish oil can apparently increase your ketones more than other types of fats, which help your energy levels and omega 3s in fish oils are great for healing your brain and body. However, after 7 days I checked my BP, it was high for me at 130/80 about 15/10 higher than I'd expect. I'm wondering if this is due to some dehydration or electrolyte imbalance?
