Before we moved to Australia I lived near RAF Wattisham, every weekend we would go and watch the lightnings of 56 and 111 Squadron's loved it, plus being from Suffolk you would see RAF, USAF and NATO a/c flying around all the time I miss it so. Living in Melbourne we only get to see the odd RAAF FA-18A classic Hornet, Super Hornet or Hawk most are based up north in New South Wales or Queensland, more so the C-130, C-17 and the KC-40 tanker as they fly into Melbourne International Airport more often then the fighters .

Duffer, great comment. Likewise. also spent too long outside the heads office. I joined the army. However. I now "fly" fast jets. with full VR. and OMG. I downloaded a sim called DCS World. (free) and now have quite a few fast movers in my stable. My fav is the F18c and am waiting for the F16 to be released. These ate stand alone modules ,that are "high fidelity" you have a clickable cockpit, that works. look on youtube for Matt Wagner, have a look yourself. I tend to just burn off JP8 when I am not in a good place. and do night carrier landings case 1 and 3. have a look you may like it.

Does the leading aircraft need to do anything to keep in formation, or is it the following aircraft that must maintain position and distance? For instance if the lead changes direction , say turning right as in your video how does he communicate intention ... or do you follow rules of air or other protocol?
@FastJetPerformance
@FastJetPerformance 7 жыл бұрын
Rupert Utley the lead aircraft sets a power and then tends to not move the throttle of be doesn't have to. His turns are all just down as normal but with a slower initial roll rate. For configuring with gear and flaps these are called on the radio, if in cloud, or commenced with hand signals if in clear air so that the number two aircraft can prepare for them.

I've always wondered how it is that that massive barn-door airbrake on the Hawk doesn't produce a big nose-down pitch moment. It obviously produces a tons of drag, but it's at an angle that looks like it will also produce loads of extra lift aft of the CG. I presume it doesn't give a pitch-down effect, but how's that?
@FastJetPerformance
@FastJetPerformance 4 жыл бұрын
In relation to the size of the main lifting surfaces of the wing and tailplane, the size of the airbrake is insignificant. There is a very small trim change but not much.

Why can you not use a visual hand signal for flap when you are in cloud? If you can formate on the lead aircraft in cloud, then you can see it, so you can see his/her hand signals? Not a problem - or it wasn't when I flew Harriers. Maybe when I was on IV(AC) Sqn we were either better or more stupid.
@jackroster6472

Probs a generic sortie question, why does gear go down so early in the recovery? Increase in drag = less flexibility to manoeuvre in an emergency? Cheers.
@FastJetPerformance
@FastJetPerformance 2 жыл бұрын
The drag from gear and flaps means a higher power setting is required which helps when flying formation as there is less spool up time from the engine.

Yes, different on larger aircraft but jets use 'check - kick - close' (check rate of decent, kick of drift, close the throttle) on landing.

Boy, that spoiler is out for quite awhile huh? It looks like your would have been going 500kts. , or whatever, for it to be out that long, with not a real significant loss of altitude it looks like.
@nvstewart
@nvstewart 4 жыл бұрын
Just because the airbrake is out don't presume he is at idle throttle. Also if the airbrake is out and the pilot has the throttle open it is easier for the wingman to maintain position in the formation. Imagine this. You are driving down a motorway at 70mph alongside a friend in another car who is also traveling at 70mph. Your friend slams on the brakes as hard as he can, it would be impossible for you to maintain position with your friend no matter how hard you try and brake (due to your reaction time) and you will end up overshooting your friend and end up in front. Now, imagine the same scenario but instead of slamming the brakes on, he only applies 50% braking force, that gives you extra leverage to be able to stay alongside without too much issue because if you start to overshoot you simply brake more to get the formation back under control. The airbrake on the Hawk is either at 0% or at 100%, there is no in between, so to compensate you use some throttle to make it easier for the wingman to keep his station. Also, in a formation, the lead pilot has to concentrate on being much smoother with his aircraft to aid his wingman, so no sudden attitude, speed or bank changes, needs to be smooth smooth smooth. If the pilot was flying on his own he can be more aggressive at the controls. This is one reason why there is not a 'significant loss of altitude', if the pilot was at idle the descent would be faster with the airbrake out. Another reason why there is not a 'significant loss of altitude' is because the lead aircraft is being controlled by ATC in a controlled manner so that means there is no need to 'dive' and will descend slowly, how you would imagine an airliner to descend. The instructions from the ATC will be giving altitude commands to the pilot at specific times at specific distances for a smooth and controlled decent.
