Fastpitch Softball - Professional Slap Running Times

The entire first season of Athletes Unlimited was used to create this video. Times were all taken from video at 30 fps, so the error rate is ~1/30 of a second. I tried to mitigate the error rate by picking the ending frame based on if the beginning frame was before or after contact.
I learned the fastest times don't always equate to the fastest runners. Fast runners run fast, but technique is very important in this discipline and can mean a difference of ~0.3 seconds. I was very surprised that AJ Andrews did not run one of the fastest times, despite being widely considered one of, if not the fastest runner. I also believe AJ Andrews is one of the fastest runners on this video because I timed her running out a triple, which was the fastest among a very small sample size. Upon analysis of her technique, her footwork in and getting out of the box really hurts her time. When compared side by side to the fastest by far, Morgan Zerkle, the difference is quite obvious. Location in the box, right foot location at contact, shin angles at contact, etc. all contributed to the time differences. My intuition tells me Andrews and Zerkle are probably very similar in pure speed, which is unfortunately not reflected in their slap hitting running times.

I was 5’5 and 165 lbs… built like a power hitter yet my fastest time was 2.65, avg. 2.70 on field. I was at 3.5 before i lost some weight and did speed/agility training, and i worked and worked and literally WILLED myself to be faster. EVERYONE can be faster. turned myself into an extremely dominate slap/drag bunter. For any of you girls who don’t think you can be faster, you can.

This just shows again why electronic batters boxes are needed to make the game fair for all. The 2nd, 5th, 9th and 10th batter all should have been called out for part of their foot being outside the box. I’m sure there were more but these were some of the early ones in the video.

The rule is out of the box. Any part of the foot touching chalk at the point of contact is legal

Its because the distance from home to first in softball is 60 feet but in baseball its 90 feet
