I just spent the last 3 days learning this technique through trial and lots of error. You just explained everything i learnt in 12 minutes. Mfw

Also if your asset is comprised of multiple meshes, you need to separate them into separate objects in Maya, then add them to one group. Export the group as an fbx with _low after. Naming each object in the group with _low also helps. Do the same for the high polly mesh. Then you can then import the fbx files into marmost using the folder with an arrow button directly to the right of the bake button. This will automatically assign each object to a different bake group under the corresponding high/low polly mesh. This will stop the multiple cages from interfering with each other and causing artefacts. Also if after the bake, one of the objects has like weird black atritifacts its probably because the cage is too small, even if it doesn't look too small, making it slightly bigger might just fix it.

This is correct. what you can also do if you are a bit more old school is the exploding mesh technique where you move the low and high poly meshes apart in maya and then just have a final version where they are all in the correct position. do not you will be missing out on some ao with that technique so it is good to also bake just the final low poly with everything in place just for the ao

Yes, I am currently learning Maya so I figured using it in simple tutorials is a good way to practice. but I am slowly switching away from blender and doing more 3ds max and Maya stuff.

If your main objective is speed, why not use quick loader inside Marmoset for your meshes, or the Preview button to see your maps on your low poly without having to drag them yourself ?

I was still on the first release version of marmoset toolbag 4 when I made this tutorial which had a bug sometimes that broke the preview button :) but I did show people the button in this tutorial. I was not aware of the quick loader so I will look into that.

So In this technique you don’t care about creating hardened edges in your uv seams?

Only if there are smoothing errors. altho now a days i do tend to add weighted normals even to models that will be baked from high to low
