He points to his accountant before as the reason for not filing and paying his taxes. And that very well could be true. But if that’s the case and he didn’t same thing where he paid basically zero attention to be robbed by another accountant is genuinely inept. It doesn’t excuse an accountant but you have to pay some level of attention and if you had an accountant steal from you before then you should be well aware of what you needed to be doing following those events man. Accountants can be shady but there’s some responsibility to pay the bare bones level of attention to things to not have these things happen.

Accountants usually just do taxes and bookkeeping. Make sure they are CPA or EA credentialed. CPA"s audit also, but that's a different headache. CPA's and EA's lose license if they get caught stealing from client. Also do not invest with CPA's or EA's. That's a broker - be wary of accountants who try to sell investment products.
