They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What may seem an eyesore to one person, just might be a beautiful masterpiece to another. There are places beloved by communities and protected in the hearts of those that hold their memories of its tattered hallways and decayed rooms dear. This is the way that we feel when we explore places that have been forgotten by time. Left to rot and decay and only holding the silent whispers of what once was. We know that there are people out there with malicious intent toward these places that we venture into. It saddens us when we see the filth and destruction they leave behind, but we want to make something very clear… We are explorers and lovers of history. We in no way, shape or form condone the criminal activities that take place in the historical decaying places that we document. Social media has brought many of these places to the limelight, but the intention is to show the beauty and mystery of abandonment. Not to invite trouble. Trouble will find its way on its own and to say that the peaceful documentation of these places leads to criminal activity, is mind blowing. We have met so many amazing fellow explorers in our travels and are so thankful and humbled by the positive responses we have received. We know that this type of exploration is not for everyone…many people don’t understand why we find such beauty in decay, we can only explain it as a beautiful journey into the past. We invite you to watch our explores and come along as we visit these amazing places. As for the criminal activity that occurs, those individuals are responsible for their own actions. It is a terrible part of our society, but reality, nonetheless. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for loving this location just as much as we do. We hope that through this video, the memories held within will remain.

Thank you for hiking up Mount Success to this site, it is amazing to see. My aunt, Mary McEttrick was a 21 year old flight attendant and survived. Mary wrote on the wing of the plane with her lipstick, indicating the number of survivors, in the hopes of being spotted and rescued. She continued flying with Northeast after this crash, and at her retirement from Delta Airlines (merged with Northeast) she was the #3 in seniority. Mary passed away in 2015. Again, thank you!

A little explanation about the crash: They landed on the top of the trees what have "softed their fall", and since they were coming in slow for a jet because of the flaps they hadn't had a very hard impact. About all the debries, every aircraft, mainly the commercial ones, are made to break apart in 3 main blocks of survival so it can take most of the impact in order to protect the passengers. Great exploration, loved to see!

Very cool. Looks a bit strenuous for me, especially since my back started acting up. I couldn't do a one mile level walk right now, but hopefully in the future a bit. We just had to cancel a cruise because I wouldn't have been able to walk the ship just getting place to place day after day. I remember doing places like Mt Le Conte in the Smokies. Fun stuff. I envy you a bit, but I think I've probably got ten to fifteen years on you guys, so there's that. I could have done this easily ten years back. My old man had a piece of mostly vertical property about 5 miles out of the park, between it and the Blue Ridge parkway in Townsend Tenn. that he was going to put a cabin on but never got that far. I remember going up parts of that ridge you literally couldn't get enough traction to stay without sliding down, kind of tree to tree stuff. Getting older sucks. We had a friend that had 64 acres down the road that had a goodly amount of 'flat' on it. I can't even imagine what that piece of property would be worth now. It was on Carr's Creek Road, for anyone that knows the area, and cares. Partially run down hillbilly with a few nice cabins/houses. At least it was then. Maybe nicer now. The Appalachians up where you are don't look all that different, actually. The last time I was up to Clingman's dome I was really disheartened to see how bad the forest looked around it. They said it was acid rain, don't know if that was true. Hopefully it's better now, maybe worse though. That's a fairly short trail, fully maintained, that was very pretty view, from the observation platform.

Thank you for watching and commenting! It was BY FAR the hardest hike we have ever done. It was a steep rocky 9 mile journey at an elevation of about 3600 ft but the payoff was AMAZING!!! Those views from up there are simply breathtaking! It's quite a sight to see the remnants of the plane crash. it's pretty clear why the wreckage could not be removed. The area was very wooded and so remote that it would be impossible to get any recovery equipment up there. We would definitely do this hike again! It was unforgettable!

Nose of aircraft hit first and took the brunt of the impact, likely shredded. Difficult to access crash-site in those days. They likely took the instrument panels from the cockpit and major pieces of the engines and had to leave the rest. From the looks of the debris field it is possible the aircraft cartwheeled. Maybe they were in a turn at impact as the pilots may have realized what was happening and tried to turn away, so aircraft had one wing down at impact. Too many years have passed at this point. The lack of fire is interesting. That aircraft was piston-powered, and used gasoline. I have not read the CAB report, but, they must have been low on fuel to have escaped an explosion on impact! You are correct. The lavatory, galley, baggage compartment, and main door were all in the rear of the aircraft. There was also a small compartment for mail bags right behind the cockpit.

This was a fantastic find well worth the effort to get there! The views on the way were beautiful! I've done a lot of hiking and never grew tired of the vistas. No sounds of nature on that one section was really strange. That usually means trouble, either severe weather or a predator. It sure can create an uneasy feeling when you're out like that. The way the wreckage appears now I too wonder how anyone survived. The information sheet though said the fuselage remained largely intact, so I wonder if it's been torn apart by souvenir hunters? The section with the door would have been the rear. The door on a DC-3 was aft on the port side. It was really cool someone left a visitor log along with the history. I hope it stays there so the passengers and crew won't be forgotten. The fact it's hard to access helps preserve the site. Great video! Thank you for going through all that to share it!

What a wonderful touching way of telling their story. What a hike!! And thanks for the "Thank You" at the end of this video, but it's us who "THANK YOU", for the videos and for the kind dear friendship.👍😙🤘 It reminded me of a plane crash that happened way back. There was only 1 surviver and the man that made it swore he'd never go on a plane again. BUT .... years latter he was talked into what was soposed to be a very short flight so he boarded the plane. In short, because of sudden bad weather the plane got deverted to another airport but never made it and it crashed, everyone on board except one lived. The person that died was the man who swore he wouldn't fly again AND...where the plane had crashed was the exact spot where that man's 1st plane crashed.😨 Werid but true.

Keep in mind, the plane was mostly intact when it crashed. They built a service rd up and salvaged anything useable…. So that mess of metal and missing pieces are as a result of salvage operations and not the crash. Pictures are out there of it laying in the trees mostly intact. That mess isn’t from the crash. FYI
@JMExplorations Жыл бұрын
FYI It is still a crash site and the purpose of this video was to document our hike up there, to reach the goal of finding what was left and, most importantly, to tell the story. While I can appreciate you wanting to school us on the salvage attempts, the point is, there is still wreckage left. This was, hands down, the most difficult hike we have ever done. It you didn’t notice, we are not kids, so it was not easy. We have been to several crash sites and this one was our greatest accomplishment. If you have never seen our channel, welcome, but know this….We take people to places they may never get to see and so for us, that is the greatest reward. It would have been nice to hear some positive words from you as opposed to strictly trying to educate us on the salvage efforts. We know how hard rescue teams work and we know how important it is to retrieve as much wreckage as possible. Not really sure where a service road would have been (The path that we followed was no joke….extremely treacherous), so feel free to give us some documentation of that. I would love to learn more. -Jennifer

FYI……. I agree with Jen. That was really a treacherous hike and I would be very surprised if you could get any vehicle that far up and that remote. Also, this happened almost 70 years ago so yeah…show me pics of the plane “laying in the trees mostly intact.” It was all about the tough hike, beautiful views, spending quality time together and most important paying respects to the people that went through this ordeal. Yeah you could have said something nice but you chose to make sure we knew that we were wrong!!! Mission accomplished I guess!!! 👍👍 ~Marcel

Sorry if you took this message the wrong way. Wasn’t my attempt. I actually subscribed to you guys. I am 60 and understand what a brutal hike that must have been.
