We need to provide better mental health care for our first responders and veterans returning from wars. These are good, brave men. My late husband was a Captain in the Army during the Vietnam War with disabilities and committed suicide a few months ago. He expressed many of the same feelings and ideas that Nygard was expressing. He was not going to be taken alive. He also had these suicidal ideations. Had bad work reviews. Thought the world was persecuting him. Had anger issues. Our veterans are not bad men, or criminals trying to get better. They are sick men trying to get well. There should be no assumption on the part of society that these brave men come home mentally well. Mental health treatment should be an ongoing necessary condition of receiving veteran's benefits and pensions. Maybe tragedies like these could be avoided. It's horrific to see the violent death of a loved one. I pray for mercy, healing and forgiveness every day.
