I don't know too much about dune books (which is why im here) but i do know a fair bit about movies, and what I am sure is that Denis will not be directing any Dune movies after the third. He's said multiple times in interviews he likes new stories and challenges so I am sure he wouldn't stick with it for another 3+ years of filming, potentially reaching the 2030s. My main worry is that it ends up being picked up by a company like disney, and they throw shitty writers at it and drive the franchise into the ground. Hopefully dune 3 is great though, im excited to see what happens.
@FatalxBlade8 ай бұрын
I have heard that as well. I did listen to an interview the other day where he said to ask him after Messiah and see where he's at. I think you're right though he will stop after Part 3. I don't think Legendary will give up the movie rights and WB has distribution rights, so I imagine they will just get a new director if they keep making movies. Granted I don't know all the logistics behind the copyrights, but I don't think it will end up at Disney.

DV said that Chani is a key character, that she is the counter balance to the messiah cult and a voice of reason. I can see two parallrl plots developing: Paul , Teenage Alia , Duncan/Hayt in Arrakeen overcoming attempts on Paul's life ,Irulan plotting, the development of Alia cult etc. anf chani in a Sietch being angry with Paul . There whe witnesses the developing plot against Paul and moved by her love for him, goes back to arrakeen to warn him. They bang and she becomes prego. The stone burner , blindness and all that remains rhe same. I would also not be surprised if Alia's possession by Baron Harkonnen is included to have some more formidable villain. They could even make her+posessed the main 'villain' here
@FatalxBlade8 ай бұрын
Seems like a plausible theory. I do wonder if the changes in Part Two kind of undercuts the whole Alia possession by the Baron. In the books it's poetic that she is possessed and eventually brought to ruin by the Baron after having been the one to kill him. In this version there are no interactions between them.

Here’s another possibility. Part 3 and 4. Denis said that he was willing to work on part 3 but ultimately if the story continued, and if he felt like he lost his passion than he would pass the work over to director Steven Spielberg who has agreed to keep his vision of the films connected and ultimately give them more breathing space.

Awesome video! As someone who has not read the Dune saga by Frank Herbet, I have seen videos of people discussing the book Dune, Dune Messiah and the other books. I think in Dune Messiah we will see the twins being born, I think it would be cool to see Paul walk into the desert in the end. A scene that would be cool to see is maybe Denis can give snippets of Alia starting to be possessed. Have Alia make some dark decisions, and then have her back to herself reflecting on what she's done, feeling guilty, so the audience can tell that Alia is not fine. I love Denis' version of Chani. Maybe have more sibling scenes between Paul and Alia. This is my theory and I guess a bit of a fan idea on the relationship between Chani and Paul still having the baby's twin plot line in the story and telling the story of Messiah. Since Chani in the movie is a non-believer in the prophecy, she isn’t 100% religious, I think she is religious, but she sees that Bene Gesserit is using religion to manipulate her people. I think there will be drama between Chani and Paul before they get back together and after they are together. We know Paul can see into the future, he said that he and Chani will be together. What if the visions he sees Chani and him getting back together isn’t the actual path and it happens completely differently. I know from the videos I have seen of people discussing Dune Messiah, there are Fremen rebelling against Paul. Before Paul and Chani get back together, it’ll be interesting to see Paul demonstrate to Chani that he loves her, etc. While Chani is having trouble trusting him, after watching her people leave to fight in the holy war, and then seeing the aftermath of Paul ruling Arakkis. Chani will join the rebellion group, but not in betraying or killing Paul, Chani will try to bring back the Paul she fell in love with in helping him make the right decisions towards the golden path and still keep an eye on the princess. Maybe see the influence that Alia will have on Paul in the movie. Maybe Paul feels a little jealous in the sense of Chani talking to a Fremen more than with him. Somehow Paul and Chani get back together, still using the plot story of the twin babies, Chani will keep talking to Paul, until the birth of her babies, she dies and then shows the end of Messiah. It’ll be interesting to see Princess Irulan turn against the Bene Gesserit and see her make the decision to raise Chani and Paul children at the end of Messiah. Something like that.

Second book is tricky to adapt, Villeneuve needs to insert more action and a pace similar to part 2, and also needs to ending in an epic sad note but not showing Paul as a villain, rather a tragic character. Yeeeeeeaaaah it's gonna suck in my honest opinion... I remember before Part 2 came out I said if this movie doesn't include Jamis funeral scene, or Gurney sneaking up on Jessica with a knife I'm going to be very disappointed. Not only did it not include those scenes, it didn't include Thufir Hawat, and the straw that broke the camel's back for me was Chani's character change.... I'm happy for people who haven't read the books though as they will be absolutely loving this trilogy, but I for one will not go out of my way to watch part 3 because I know I'm just gonna be even more disappointed with how many more ridiculous changes Villeneuve is going to make. He calls himself a feminist yet turn all the woman in this story into caricatures of themselves. Even Star Wars has a better bloody love story between Annakin and Padme and it's already seen as a joke. The Matrix captured Chani and Paul's relationship better than Villeneuve ever will conceive.

They IMHO while not as deep as the originals were still quite good. I would like to see a possible movie made on those books. Showing the start of the Butlerian Jihad, the origins of the Mentats, the Guild Navigators, who was the first Bene Gesserit. There are a lot of material that could be used to make quality movies with the right producer and director.

The timeline of the book take place right after the end of the Butlerian Jihad, and spotlight the Atredies hero of that war.

Hey man really cool video. I actually am quite of the opposite opinion on the film/book changes. I pretty much prefer all of the movie changes to that of the book, and I feel like in many ways it makes it more comprehensive to our own time. For example I feel like the changes he made to Chani were brilliant, and it really serves both characters well- though admittedly it could take the story in a very different way. As things stand right now with the movies, maybe Chani won't really ever take the side of Paul seeing as though we won't really have to think about Leto II in the context of the movies. Obviously this pretty much alters the entirety of the Dune Messiah plot, but perhaps you could end the story with Alia taking over and going in the direction Paul's children went in instead. Personally I much prefer the way Chani and Paul contrast each other and kind of give us a reality check regarding Paul. Understand that this take is coming from someone who was quite impressed with the books, but also didn't always enjoy them as a reading experience or even agree with everything Frank was contemplating. Either way fantastic video and thanks for the well informed perspective :) Always nice to hear some different views.
@Tristialawirtz8 ай бұрын
I should probably also add that I think this because of the differences in how book 1 and movie 2 ends. It would feel like backtracking a lot if chani suddenly were to ignore how idelogically and personally opposed to Paul she has become. I'd much rather see Villeneuve have the guts to double down on his interpretation to create something new rather than choosing the 'safer' option of sticking to the original too much.
@FatalxBlade8 ай бұрын
This is perhaps the nicest comment I've gotten to someone who has an opposing view to me. I appreciate that. I get where you're coming from and I'm glad it worked for you. I actually do agree that since Denis has gone this route with Chani that it actually makes more sense for this version of Chani to continue questioning Paul's rule. My biggest issue with Chani leaving book knowledge aside is that for me the chemistry was not there for the film. That and I didn't like that they inserted modern sensibilities into the story, but still kept the idea of Concubines and political marriages. Felt like it broke the world building a bit even in the context of just the films. Still interested to see where it's going and I'm glad you enjoyed the video even if we differ in opinions.

chani contrast is great, but it has major hiccups due to the changes. the most important is that chani helped paul survive the spice agony. both in the film and the book, the film made it a streamlined prophecy, which was too convenient and didn't affected chani arc to become a believer. also stilgard didn't say anything about her relationship with muadib, that she's part of the sehaya prophecy. the justification in the book is that chani has fremen's reverend mother training, which in the film was not possible due to be non-religious.

I suspect this is too pessimistic a take. To the extent Villeneuve's "Messiah" needs to add some "action" - I don't care for action-for-the-sake-of-action (i.e. the entire action genre), but if it's required to put bums in seats, OK I guess - there's plenty of jihad available to be shown at the start (something Frank Herbert simply skipped over). Done right - combined with suitable amounts of agonizing by Paul and hints of post-traumatic Fremen disaffection, the tragedic stakes can be raised in parallel with a reconciliation of Chani and Paul - particularly as it becomes clear (which wasn't the case at the end of Part II) that his marriage to Irulan is a fake one. (I expect Irulan to spend a lot of time dictating into her diary...) Jessica and Chani could even reconcile with Jessica (belatedly) telling Chani what she told her in the last few lines of the first book (but NOT in Part II). A child/youth Alia could even be given a role in fighting in the jihad, earning her the future "of the knife" moniker. (After all, it's not like Fremen children in general were incapable of going to war in the book...) The requisite time jump to Alia as a young woman and to the time when the conspiracies (among both offworlders and disaffected Fremen) are coming to a head would then take you straight into the relatively short timeline of the narrative actually set out in "Dune Messiah". In short, I don't really see the need for ANY of the core storylines of "Messiah" to be abandoned (though some simplification or streamlining might still be inevitable given the reality that books and film are different media and that films need to adhere to their own story-telling logic).
@FatalxBlade6 ай бұрын

Chani wont be skeptical of pauls prophecy anymore. In pt2 jessica completely manipulated chani with the voice into participating in the water of life ritual to resuscitate paul out of the coma. Jessica knowing full well that paul was going to convert the poison anyways because of his benegeserit training did this because chani’s action would appear to be “as written” in the prophecy that was actually made up by the benegeserit. This made chani question her previous hesitations towards the fundamentalist fremen prophecy and now more align with the fundamentalists. This isnt only true for her, but also the audience of skeptic fremen who were there that day and relayed the story to their other skeptic friends, thus consequently converting the fremen to pauls side for a completely infallible jihad
