I just purchase a Burgess Propane Powered Fogger, I purchased it on Amazon. I am going for the Wintergreen / Mineral Oil combo. One of our local bee veterans here in Oregon said this works well for him. I do not have any mites that I can visually see but I am doing this for maintenance only.

I tell every one that buys bees from me to google your videos here on you tube. I was tought by my great grandfather to never feed them sugar and keep them pest free with natural and beneficial. Just like the rough sand and planting garlic to control beetles. I grow mint and have found that if I see one mite or beetle just laying three sprigs across the hole on the top of the inner cover three days later there will be 0 pest in the hive. I have a video I need to share on that to. Thank you

Did Don get back with you. Oxyclic acid will dissolve in water or alcohol. I was wondering which is better for the OA. a fogger or vaporizer both seem to cost the same.

Hi have used this mix in my fogger and very happy with it.To day (May 11th 2018) it's the end of autumn down here in New Zealand and I'm cleaning out the mites for winter with Wintergreen oil and Mineral oil mix. I found one of my hives being robbed, I fogged the hive and also fogged the robbing bees big time they were wet. Closed down the entry hole to about 3/8in, walk away to clean up the fogger,about 15 min later I found all the bees beading on the front of the hive and with in the hour ( I opened up the entry a bit) they had all moved into the hive, they are a mixture of bee types THE ROBBING WAS OVER. the hive seems to be back as it should be, bees in bees out. I have a question that you my be able to answer. Did the fogging with wintergreen oil and mineral oil mess with the robbing bees, as to were there home is, and they now think my hive is home? there are so many bees in the hive I can not see the bottom board when looking in through the bee enty hole. Regards Graeme Hunter

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the scent of the wintergreen masked the different pheromones of the robbers and they ended up quickly picking up the scent of your hive as the fog settled?

Hi Don, Love the videos and private lesson. Do you do the fogger treatments all year? I have a major Varroa mite problem. The state bee inspector said it was 5 times the acceptable limit. I purchased the oil, fogger and mineral oil already. It's 5 July now. Can you use the fogger/wintergreen mix with honey on the hive, or would I need to remove the supers? Thank you.
@tch450r
@tch450r 8 жыл бұрын
This is supposed to be safe for bees and honey, however it only treats the bees in the hive, I usually wait till dusk to treat mine so most will be back in the hive. you can treat every 2 weeks through the spring, summer, and fall. avoid fogging them when the temperatures are too cold for them to fly as they will be clustered.

Studies shows that fogging essential oil doesn't work on controlling tracheal or varroa mites. Reason being that the essential oils need to be fed to the larvae being invested with the mites. The essential oils, in high concentrations, will actually keep the female varroa from being able to lay eggs. In lower doses, it will slow or hinder the development of her eggs. We all know that if we can hinder the development and bee hatches before the mite eggs can hatch and feed, they will die. As such, essential oil usage stops or severely interrupts the breeding cycle of the mites. The mites DO NOT die when simply exposed to the oils as in this video and studies, that I've found, have been unable to prove that fogging does anything. Best method? Mix up a batch of honey emulsified with one or more of tea tree, peppermint, spearmint, wintergreen at a rate of about 20 drops per quart or 80 per gallon. (FBM has a video on emulsifying oils into feed). Then feed this directly to the bees. This feed will be taken by, or passed to, the nurse bees who will then add it to the cells with the larvae. This delivery system is the only scientifically proven method for using essential oil in mite treatment. Any scientist has an open mind. Anyone have links to studies otherwise?
@tch450r
@tch450r 8 жыл бұрын
Interesting Info Michael, I have just a few comments... I don't know that Ive heard that fogging is effective at eradicating mites, rather it's an effective mite treatment. As you state above, if it inhibits mites from laying eggs/hatching the mites will naturally decrease in numbers till there aren't any left. in addition to inhibiting the mite's breeding cycle, I have heard that the mineral oil in fog form attaches to the mites and inhibits their respiration. You ask for scientific proof, I have none, I am a first year bee keeper and am trying this method out, based on information provided by experienced bee keepers I figured it was at least worth a try. You do say feeding oils to bees in a honey mixture has been scientifically proven to be effective, however you fail to cite your proof... a link or two to these studies would be helpful. It is also my understanding that feeding bees diluted honey was a bad idea, that sugar syrup is far better, therefore your method of treating for mites might need some tweaking. Over all good info, thanks for posting, if fogging proves to be ineffective I may look into your method more, but for now, I'll give the fogging method a try.

@@andrewrodriguez7310 Unfortunately I had to sell my two hives one year after getting them due to allergy reactions. I can tell you this though, my hives did well they were heavy with honey at the end of the summer. I took them to a storage facility for the winter, when I got them back in the spring they were active and ready to go. It was then that I had to sell them off. I am not completely sure how effective the fogging was, but I was happy with the healthy hives. hope this helps.

@@tch450r Thanks for the reply. Speaking of reactions. I don't think it's necessarily the dangerous kind but I'm honestly surprised how much my arms, face etc swells up like crazy when I'm stung by honey bees. And I'm not really allergic to anything out of the ordinary. I've been stung by yellow jackets, swasps, mud daubers, you name it and it only leaves a small raised white spot at the bite area but not these bad ass honey bees! lol
