It was last episode, but the absolute genius and serendipity that is Old Man Night's origin story astounds me. Due to Jill's dice roll, it is Tanny who can't resist the delerium's allure. Later, after Tanny has been 'changed' by the rock, it is through Joe's RP that Nem is the one who strikes the bargain and seals the pact for the first magic to be brought into the world. And Gen was there throughout it all. He was the one who had to watch his friends die or become something he no longer recognized. He watched. He watched nations rise and fall, until he was Old Man Night, the most ancient (human) spellcaster in the world.

The crew, and especially Sebastian, are going through ego death right now. They are either going to die or come out more powerful than ever. I love how Monty is running the gravity of tier 4 combat. Brutal, but still letting the gang be able to learn and adjust. I'm scared guys and I hope Drakkenforce survives!

Kelly: remember the most dangerous thing in D&D….especially high level D&D is the action economy, you losing concentration on haste hit you all in the worst way. What spells do you have that effect the action economy? Tasha’s mind whip is a great one to control the enemies turns a bit, there is also slow if you can retrain a spell for it. Polymorph could even be used to polymorph one of them into a large aquatic animal to clog the battlefield and remove them from the fight, the obvious is also hold monster, you even could have trapped one in a resilient sphere if you learned it.

Don't know if Sebastian has it, but the spell you're looking for is Banishment. It is so tempting though. I'm hoping as mostly watcher paladin (+6 initiative) the 13-14 attacks per turn from me, my mount and the monk will get the job done before disaster strikes and I fall from the sky.

🛡Spoiler Shield🛡 Man that was a close call, good thing Old Man Night bailed them out of there. The problem I see is that while Haste is a great spell, at higher levels it becomes too easy to lose concentration on it when you take the kind of damage high level fights tend to dish out. And losing a turn in an encounter can be game changing so Sebastian being down and Veo and Pluto being too exhausted to move for a round really swayed the fight in the monsters favor. Maybe OMN would be willing to teach Sebastian Banishment?

I am currently playing a lvl 11 Battlesmith artificer running around with AC23/28 (depending on shield) with magic resistance and a solid +9 Con save and had great experience with haste. Another +2AC means very few things are hitting me, so there is no need to worry about concentration saving throws while the extra one-attack action lets me trigger crossbow expert while still casting a spell if wanted or shoot 4x. Additionally, I am so quick, I can be where I need to. Sure, on higher levels this may change but for now its gold!

Message to Kelly. I am a few months behind, but i thought i would jump to the most recent episode to post a comment in case he sees. A swashbuckler does not need to use a bonus action to disengage. They get a free disengage. I am pretty sure i saw him use a bonus action for this when he could have used it for other actions. Hope he sees this! And hope it helps, if he has not already realised in the episodes i have not seen yet.

My gosh, Joe commenting on how bad they are at focus fire *immediately* after using his turn to make three attacks against three separate monsters. Sure, attack the giant to deny him an opportunity attack, but I was screaming when he chose to to attack the balor instead of the goristro. How can focusing fire be so impossible for players when it's so obviously the optimal thing to do?!

@1:57:00 Yea, walking in a fight to gain most powerful weapon, is not the way to do it. But also 2 crits for enemies in the first round... And a later one in the second one is just too much to handle on these high level fights. Few misses does not mean much, when crit can take 150 hp without any chance to mitigate it... In 3 player team, losing a player means losing 33% of party capabilities. And even healing one means losing around 50% of party capabilities for that round (and healing does not get all lost hp's back). That is just too much to handle, specially in the first few rounds. D&D in high levels is culminated to first few rounds. (Most powerful spells available, top hits with buffed up dmg, someone dies, forcing enemy to cast heals, stop enemy from acting, ...) Banishment, wall of force, dominate monster, ... Many of these are high gain gambles with chance of counter spelling... Buffs like haste should be used before battle, if possible, but like Monty said, they are not most powerful to be used in the mids of the high level combat. Zero spells casted before combat (haste, invisibility, bless, invulnerability, raising enough undead creatures [death by thousand cuts while taking out enemy resources], ...) makes enemies work much easier. Take one enemy out of the combat asap. Focus damage to second one... Basics.

Glob of invulnerability, anti magic field to shut off the power in the sword. Dispel magic would come in clutch here as well as it would allow you to dispel haste. While being a blast caster can be allot of fun, at this point you’ll need to start working on being an anti caster while the others burn damage on them. Ahhh I have so many ideas

Idk if dispel or anti-magic field would eliminate the haste. It's an artifact weopan. It depends if you consider the effect separate from the sword. Though as monty said, Wall of Force would have made it a one v 3

Twin polymorph is op when veo went down and cast it on yourself and her you could have climbed up and thrown stones as a giant ape to asses the situation or even like Monty said wall of force or banishment please ask can you retrain out some of your spells for big boss and battle field control spells you guys dish out serious damage but lack some controls love you Sebastian

This show is wildly entertaining including the combat, however I think this is a great lesson for them Monty. We are over 200 sessions in and I know they have years of playing experience outside of the live campaign, their understanding of combat tactics is mediocre at best. Veo has umbral sight! It has been mentioned as a footnote the whole campaign and has only been used to hinder her allies ability to see her... she should be untargetable in many combats. She has pass without trace they should be generating surprise regularly! They almost never use cover, never kite or make a real effort to get out of range of their enemies. I could go on but for some reason they are typically focused on making basic attacks and using blast spells. How about some summoning and battlfield control, or use the massive pile of items they forget they have... Sorry its so true.

Sebastian you are level 17, why are you wasting in combat turns on haste. Pre-buff before encounters and it’s on you to carry the magic damage. Should have dropped a nasty 7th level spell on them not used a turn to stun both your friends

The damage to Ramik which is transferred to the goristro and the balor*. She then deals 33 damage to the goristro. ( I think she missed her dread ambusher ability) *I know the damage dealt to Ramik is split but I'm not going to reiterate every time or do the math each time* 1:30:38 - Ramik tries to vortex warp Veo to him but it gets counterspelled by Sebastian 1:32:00 - St. Tarna's Bane cast haste on Ramik (and is concentrating on the spell) Ramik then crits Veo, which becomes a regular hit w/ silvery barbs, then hits her again dealing a total of 62 damage to her 1:34:00 - Pluto attacks Ramik, hitting three times for a total of 75 damage (which is split between the goristro and the balor) 1:36:03 - Sebastian twin haste Veo and Pluto, then summons Reaper (Reaper misses w/ its attack) 1:37:36 - The balor teleports and uses its whip to throw Sebastian into the Goristro's charge. It then misses Pluto w/ its lightning blade 1:38:58 - The goristro scores a critical hit w/ its charge dealing a total of 150 damage to Sebastian, one shotting him. Haste is dropped because of this 1:40:55 - Round 2: Veo and Pluto do not get turns this round because haste was dropped. Ramik misses his attack on Pluto but hits Veo, taking 31 damage (Veo would have had her reaction to shield because her turn has passed) 1:42:46 - The Balor hits Pluto once for 34 damage and the Goristro misses all 3 of its attack against Pluto (it got 2 nat ones and a 2) 1:43:48 - Sebastian fails a death saving throw 1:43:58 - Round 3: Veo misty steps to Sebastian and gives him a superior healing potion (40 HP) 1:45:31 - Pluto lands a goading attack (so it has disadvantage on attacking Veo and Sebastian) dealing 23 point of damage. Then attacks Ramik dealing 18 damage and using bait and switch to give Sebastian a +3 to his AC. Then uses his final attack to deal 19 damage to the balor 1:47:47 - Ramik tries to vortex warp Pluto but it is counted by Sebastian. Ramik then tries to eldritch blast Pluto who cast shield taking no damage 1:49:05 - Sebastian quickens sunbeam and fires twice at Ramik and the goristro they fail both rounds of saving throws taking 57 damage The goristro and the balor are bloodied 1:51:15 - The balor tries to whip Sebastian at the goristro again but misses thanks to Pluto's AC buff. It then slashes at Pluto w/ its sword missing 1:52:14 - The goristro kicks and steps on Veo leaving her at 1 HP, then crits Pluto (which ends up not being a crit) dealing 20 damage to him 1:54:20 - Old Man Night (Xel'Vocha the Ancient) gives Drakkenforce a chance to leave the fight, which they take. Session ends. 1:56:38 - Old Man Night gives some post session advice, much to the dismay of Sebastian's ego 1:59:08 - Sebastian regrets not being a better student 1:59:25 - Shout outs and patron. Also for the next 8 weeks Fate will be on break and the Pluto Jackson: Monster Slayer mini series will be starting.

So this is the THIRD time Monty has TPK'd the party! Big Linda was one, the dumb drinking puzzle near the queen of thieves lair and now this one. They're making too much money off the Drakkenheim books to allow this to happen, but that party should be dead 3 times over now. It's really lame how Wrath and Sebastian don't have any protective spells (or artifacts), but you watch and when they fight the sorcerer king and the directorate, those mages will be impossible to even damage at all with weapons. In 2nd edition, mages could buff with stoneskin/mirror image/globe of invul and they could multi-cast multiple buffs using spell sequencer. They could also have the contingency spell to cast something if they fell below a certain amount of hp as a backup rescue. This party seems to have no buffs or failsafes and Monty is super cheap with the healing potions. Even though they literally have a dragon's hoard of gold at their disposal, somehow the greatest heroes in the land are left scrabbling for one superior healing potion amongst the three! 🤔
