@@TheGenreVerse the reason why rin is mad at shirou for doing magecraft for others is because practicing it is extremely painful, like its straight up described as shirou putting a hot rod down his spine every night for ten years

@@kojoappiah7088 It's also because it goes against everything she's been taught since growing up as a child, using magecraft for no grand reason or ambition, solely to help others in need is one of the highest insults a proper magus could think of.

@@kojoappiah7088main reason why it's so painfully for Shirou because he did it very wrong until now, creating artificial circuit from his own nerves every time. It's not that magic by itself is completely painless, but usually it's not even close to what Shirou went through

@kojoappiah7088 I am aware of that, but just how she can't imagine selflessness, I can't truly imagine selfishness on that level. However, unlike the people in this (Fate) world, I am not oblivious to the existence of opposite thoughts of mine, but it's hard for me to imagine being that way. Trust me, I am the one who always points out how AWFUL humans are and how no matter where you are today, yesterday was ALWAYS worse for people. I know how selfish, conniving, and hypocritical people are/can be. I always default to my own.... Standards(?) when evaluating a person's stance on something. I mean... I served in the Army. I literally put my life on the line for hundreds of millions of people around the world (The US being World Police/defenders and funding European and Asian defense for decades and all lol).

5:50 Shirou is infamous for saying wildly sexist things too... Not in this show, and he's not really sexist, but still. And he is THE housewife of the verse. 16:35 Main character who lives to serve others in a story with magical beings called Servants? And he butts head with a Servant with seemingly opposite viewpoint? Almost like a well built story. 16:44 Pretty important line, even though it's brushed off right now. 17:15 It's actually less "I'm angry because you don't understand me", and more "the fact that you don't even see that you have a problem shows me how severe that problem is". 19:15 Archer's yapping gets really funny everytime you're reminded that Rin uses him like a butler. 19:40 Saber hearing about a completely different Kiritsugu and IIRC, remarked that Shirou must have enjoyed having such a master, lol 21:03 Because he thought they were cool. 23:50 Hmm... having an ideal be your reason to fight is somewhat different from believing in an ideal as an extra motivator I think. Would you really say you were fighting for the ideal of Freedom more than for your country, your loved ones, yourself, etc...? The thing is ideals aren't reality and depend a lot on personal interpretation so to actually fight for your ideal is not doing a job or someone else's bidding... Archer is saying that if the ideal comes from you then you're actually just fighting for yourself (and that's a-OK to him!), but if you're fighting for someone else's ideal that you don't necessarily believe in, then you're fighting for nothing. In that case you can never be satisfied and the fight becomes a self-destructive spiral with no reward. He's also saying that if your reason to fight is some abstract ideal, then you would prioritize that ideal over actual people, and end up not helping or saving anyone. Here Archer is mostly addressing Shirou's specific desire to help people to the detriment of himself (to live as a... servant of others), calling him and his ideals all kinds of words. Anyway, I'm just gonna put this counter here, for no reason: Times Archer helped/saved Shirou: 2

Edit: Anyone reading this comment, don't forget that F/SN is now on Steam and has a full English patch, so don't forget to support it! 2:51 After the battle with Kuzuki in the previous episode, Shirou used projection magecraft that he hadn't used for a long time, also he successfully projected Archer's sword for the first time. Everything that happened suddenly caused his magic circuit to get a little out of control, causing him great pain. 17:00 Although Rin here acts like a girl getting angry at a boy. But the reason why she was angry was because she could not understand Shirou's "selfless dedication" at all. For the mages in the TYPE-MOON universe, studying magic is for their own selfish desires. The end of their research is to go to the "roots" where they can find the ultimate answers to their lives. For ordinary people, the goal of life may be "inexhaustible money", "lifelong happiness", "family peace". But for mages, their goals might be: "What is my essence? Is it a natural desire to killing? Is it an endless spiral? Or is it just a flash of light in the flames?" "What methods can be used to bring permanent world peace?" "Could I go back to the age of myth and let Zeus teach me the ancient mysteries?". Rin inherited the dream of Tohsaka Tokiomi (the red suit man in F/Z), and Shirou, he learned magic just to help if there is someone in the future who needs my help. And, that's it. Even the heroes of Marvel and DC have their own desires. Peter Parker hopes to live a better life to please MJ, Batman hopes to see his parents alive, and Hulk hopes to find a place to settle down without being hunted by the military. Goals, pursuits, desires. None of them exist. Shirou Emiya only lives and will always works hard for somebody others.

The mages are coldblooded pricks who only care about their goals and only help others if it serves their needs. Rin's main character resides in juggling around her magus background and being herself. Rin is constantly struggling between the two selves within her: the part of her that is a magus and the part of her that is human. It’s very clear in UBW that she tries many times to be the cold and calculating magus but ends up helping Shirou time and time again. When she was chasing Shirou in the school, she was serious and thought this was the best way to take him out of the war without any serious injuries. Her cold facade fell when she saw Shirou helping her and decided to let herself be a little loose. Her cold exterior is much more of a defense mechanism in order to avoid having to make herself vulnerable. Rin is a girl who struggles to find her own path in the world because she’s not sure whether she should listen to her conscience or the teachings of her father. When interacting with Shirou, she realizes she can be vulnerable around him and embrace her human side more. This also parallels with Shirou, as both have taken their respective father goals and try to achieve them in their stead, which leads to a pretty interesting dynamic between the two. I wish Ufotable didn't exaggerate her facial reactions; they went with a more marketable approach for the anime as they exaggerated her tsundere traits because in the anime many times her character gets reduced to being a tsundere by people whenever these things are considered. It is not that she has problem admitting she likes her crush; she has problem admitting she cares about people in general for reasons other than selfish gains. But if she can frame that caring about people as "This serves me," she is perfectly able to do that. This attitude is hurting other people and herself in the long run. It's important because it's going to play a huge role in HF as her two sides collide, making it very hard for her to make important decisions for the worse. What I'm saying is that yes, she is a tsundere, but her traits are more of a defense mechanism than a checklist of tropes, making her more nuanced. She becomes more direct and straight when it comes to what she wants and seeing Shirou's suicidal tendencies. Shirou lost everything in the fire-his parents, wishes, and will to live 16:44 . He has a very low self-esteem and is empty inside, and to fill this emptiness, he decided to copy Kiritsugu, as it gave him joy when he saved him. For him, this is the only way to keep moving forward; other things don't give him happiness. Rin, despite her harsh training, can still feel joy in the process as she does it for herself, as it makes her closer to a human than a cold magus. She gets angry with Shirou because he doesn't do it for himself and doesn't find any joy in the process. If he does that for himself, at least he will find some self-worth. She knows without a doubt he will sacrifice himself for strangers if the opportunity arrives, acting as a machine rather than a human.

0:10 words to ruin your life. 2:36 Shirou is very stubborn. 4:03 next to his room was the compromise. 4:18 the price for yesterday. 5:22 oof you have my sympathies. 5:48 and you now also have my pity. 6:57 hi Rin. 7:00 Shirou not believing his eyes. 7:03 Rin mad. 7:46 Shirou was raised to be generally chivalrous towards women. 7:59 obviously she would. 8:31 Rin likes to tease. 8:44 poor Shirou, he’s outnumbered two to one. 9:23 delayed reaction. 9:27 Shirou, K.O 9:35 Rin is an expert at verbal warfare. 10:13 Rin is scary. 10:43 Taiga is actually very fierce when it concerns defending the rules and being Shirou’s guardian. 11:33 Shirou is very stubborn. And also, housework is something he takes pride in. So that’s why he’s reluctant to step back. 12:22 that was a lie! 14:57 a crucial painful difference. 15:16 your slightly missing the mark… 15:44 Shirou’s problem is that he DOESN’t enjoy it. But he does it because he wants to make other people happy. 16:55 though being harsh and angry, she’s actually just really worried for Shirou. 17:08 true. Thoughts she is actually the one in the right here. 19:03 basically, I’m moving in. Deal with it. 20:41 this is explained more in detail in the Fate Route. Magic Circuits are what makes a Mage a Mage. Opening them and getting used to them is the first step to learning magic. Shirou didn’t learn that however. Because Kiritsugu didn’t want him to learn Magecraft he taught a nonsense method meant only to get Shirou to give up on learning Magic. Unfortunately Shirou was too stubborn and refused to give up, regardless of the fact that he hadn’t made a single step forward in the ten years he started learning. When Shirou used Projection to protect Rin, he force open his then closed Circuits open, causing his numbness. To sum it up, Magic Circuits are the Mage’s Engine. Without which, a mage couldn’t be a Mage at all. Shirou’s mistake is that he was constantly creating a faulty, third rate engine every time he used magic, rather than use his already existing, properly working engine. In the fate route, Rin had Shirou use one of her Gems to safely fix this issue. 20:51 that is pretty much it. 24:49 yep.

Nihilism is no better than being overly optimistic. The world (and humanity) is gray and gooey, not black and white with clear define lines. Love the show and the conversations it drives.
