Dad ran two of those for probably 20 years between the two (never more than about 6 or 8 cords of cutting in a given year). Heavy saws and not fast, but he liked them - too heavy for me to run long when I was on the young side of teenage and bugging him to work under his supervision. I don't think they were expensive and they never really cost him much in service over the years. The exhaust on them makes them sound deep, and they have a funny ringing idle.

Nice to see a father and son team! Nothing like having the kids along :) By the way, I'm in power saw mourning today...one of the guys who was with us on the clean up today, had to fall a 75' spruce leaning somewhat towards the powerline. He made the undercut at the wrong place, miscalculated the wind totally, the tree went down almost catching the powerline...it evaded the powerline, but not my trusty old 262...have never ever seen a powersaw as flattened as that thing, even the bar looks like a Z.. Haha!! Just glad no one got hurt.

Picked myself up an old PM 610 before finding your channel, Buckin. Glad I found your channel for sure. Had to rebuild that old 610, with a 610 Super piston & cylinder and of course threw a 28" McCulloch bar & chain on it. Love that saw and it's growl, it has the torque to get through a lot (surprises the Stihl guys here too). Has the silly large brake handle on it though which gets in the way of filling the oil. Interesting that mine came with dogs on both sides of the bar, and some have no dogs... I now have a Pro Mac 10-10 hanging in the garage waiting for a carb rebuild, and a bar & chain as well. Can't wait to run it!

So Glad to see you using the 610! These are the saws that I cut my teeth on with my Grandfather. Nothing like the 60-70's macs like you are used to but to me they were heaven! The smell of 2 stroke in the morning : ) He gave me a Mac timberbear, it was the newest model of the 610 before they stopped production. Has a much better chain brake handle on it. Pro tip on starting, the trigger safety on the handle is basically like a built in high idle. Its had to explain but if you pull the trigger a little and pull up on the spur on the top of the handle it will hold the throttle open a little. You might know this but it didn't look like it was engaged. Do that and choke it and it will start much faster. My olier does the exact same thing. have to pump it manual a few times before the auto kicks in. Love the videos Buckin! I was SO excited to see a 610 out!

@DMJ160
@DMJ160 5 жыл бұрын
Just curious, why do you say they are not a 10-10 or PM 555? I have 2 610's and a PM 700. 610's run strong with a 20 inch bar but the 700 with a 24 inch bar still much stronger in my opinion.
@johndunbar2393
@johndunbar2393 5 жыл бұрын
@@DMJ160 Hey Dave! I have a half dozen 610's, a half dozen 10-10's, of different variants and a Pro Mac 555, and the 610's struggle to keep up with the smaller saws. I run 20 inch bars on my 610's as well, because they start struggling with anything over that. I've run a 24" skip tooth on them and they did OK. Nothing special. Now the 10-10's and my 555, they will pull 28 inch bars just fine. The 610's will not, I've tried it. They'll pull it, but they bog down VERY easy with the longer bars. So I should say, they will not pull longer bars as effective as the 10-10 or 555. My comment was more aimed towards where the company was at, at the time of when these saws were produced. The 610's came on line, after Black and Decker sold McCulloch, to a private company, which was the beginning of the end, of the legacy Robert McCulloch started. Most, if not all, (I'm not an expert on the McCulloch Corporation), of the 10-10's and the 555 were made back when Robert McCulloch still owned the company, or when Black and Decker owned them, and still believed in higher quality. After the private company bought them, they started with plastic parts, they were being made in Mexico, and the overall quality, just wasn't there, like the older, all metal saws. That's what I was getting at. I still like and use my 610's, they are just not up to the quality level of my 10-10's and 555. I will say, I'm hoping to get a 700 one of these days. I have a couple Stihl 461's, so I don't really have a use for a 70cc McCulloch, other than, just because. So that puts it down on the priority list a bit.

@@johndunbar2393 Thank you for the info! It shows a "Power Mac 610" was made from 1978 -1985 and a "Super Pro Mac 610" 1985-1994 on www.acresinternet.com site. They look the same. I have seen some 610s' with a assembled in Mexico label on them.

@@DMJ160 Yep, Black and Decker had it for a decade. I know mine all have Pro Mac 610 on them and they were made in Mexico. Got me curious now Dave. I'll have to see if I can find anything showing the differences between the Power Mac and Pro Mac. I does seem some of that style started showing up in the Black and Decker era. Even the Pro Mac 650 was made from 78 to 85, if that site is 100% correct, and the picture is the same for it as well. So, I'm not real sure! Lol! I just know the 10-10's and 555's are a different animal, even though they give up a few cc's.

I've got 3 nice 610s I love. (actually 7 of them, 5 run good, 2 I'm sellin, 3 I'm keepin). Great saws if not a little heavy but great saws. You ever had issue with one if you tip it too far foward wanting to flood? Mine seem to do that. Think the oiler is biggest issue on these, it's a diaphragm type and eventually wears out. Ol Bob in NY sold me a couple new old stock ones but they are 20 years old already now too! haha. Don't know if I'll be able to use em much when those poop out unless I could make a new diaphragm out of somethin.

In Australia we would say it was a "fair dinkum" cord of wood (except that we go by the cubic meter 😂😂😂😂)

24inch bar is fine , if you put a 28 you can lose some power cut

I've got a 36" on mine running skip chain. Here on the West Coast we cut a lot of big soft wood, I'd rather have more bar than more speed honestly.

I bought a 610 and it didn’t have any dogs on it either. I wonder if that was common on that model. What do you think?
@daw162
@daw162 5 жыл бұрын
dad had two of them (we cut our own firewood, but nothing more) and neither had dogs, either. They were a heavy slow saw but they had a great sounding idle. He got a mid range husky about 15 years ago and that was the end of those saws (his were worn out, though, I'll give him credit - he "used them up")

What is the gas/oil ratio you run in that Pro Mac 610? There is a lot of confusion and opinions for these old McCullochs. Thanks, Buster
@DMJ160
@DMJ160 5 жыл бұрын
Buster, I went through the same confusion. Says with McCulloch oil 40:1 anything else...20:1. I find it hard to think there is a difference in McCulloch 2 cycle oil v.s. other brand 2 cycle oil. If I am correct? McCulloch didn't make oil just had their name on the container. 3.2 ounce of oil to 1 gallon gas gives you 40:1. I go 3.6 ounce to a gallon which gives 36:1. My run fine with that ratio. I get about 9 gallons of mixed fuel with a 1 quart container.
McCulloch- my first power saw. Life message
