A precursor to Father Ted in the 1990s - although the humour here is rather more gentle. Could the drunken Father O'Brien - (I've known so many drunken Irish Catholic priests!) be the inspiration for the alcoholic Father Jack in Father Ted? I wonder if Graham Linehan - the Irish writer of Father Ted - watched Father Charlie when he was a kid in the 1980s, and the memory stuck with him when he was looking for sitcom ideas 10 years later?
