Without a doubt one of the greatest songs ever written

Lyrically one of the best songs ever written. This and The Past is a Grotesque Animal. Sums up the difficulty we find ourselves in...

This song feels written in response to "do you realize" by flaming lips. Its 1000% more cynical, but feels so much more meaningful. We feel meaning *despite* these things, we give it to ourselves, we don't need to glom on to some external source of meaning, we make it ourselves, every day. The world is dying, we don't serve a higher purpose, but i love you, and that's more beautiful than anything we could imagine.

That’s such a cool thought! Aliens with a touch of comedy = FJM 🎉❤

i dunno, i dont feel the same way, but i can see how you get that from it for me they do answer the same questions differently i just would doubt its intentional i feel like both are atleast equally meaningful to me though i do honestly prefer this song if i had to say which is better

Do you realize?? Is more surface melancholy.. this is ayn rand ranting but FJM is so tact about melody and guitar. This song specically calling out the elite and media in USA and it exists because it frightens them to no end that every word he is spilling out is true.

Belting out every lyric at the top of my lungs, sometimes it makes me cry and laugh with despair and solace all at once. I’ll always cherish this song, and it’s nice to see so many others relating to it.

kaitlyn zuniga Our generation tends to be very hyperbolic; But I truly believe that: “Love is just an institution based on human frailty” and “Maybe, Love is just an economy based on resource scarcity” ... Are some of the best lyrics of the past 40 years ... since Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and John Lennon. There are only a handful of Lyricists from the past 40 years that I would say come close to him, as lyricists: Jeff Buckley (“Lover you should’ve come over”, “Mojo Pin”, “Grace”), Richard Ashcroft (“Bittersweet Symphony”, “The drugs don’t work”), Bono (“Bad”, “Running to stand still”, “The Fly”, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”), Kurt Cobain (“Heart shaped box”, “All apologies”), Fiona Apple (“Every single night”, “Daredevil”), Eddie Vedder (“Black”, “Jeremy”) ... I cannot recommend listening to those other artists/songs enough.

@@CipherSerpico I'd say FJM is a mix of an alternative Satirical Bob Dylan, Pessimistic John Lennon and Narcissistic Jim Morrison

@@CipherSerpico I’d throw in Joanna Newsom and Kendrick Lamar in there. To this day though, Dylan stands in a lane of his own

@@nietzschesmustache9483 add Morrissey to the list. He’s the only lyricist that’s consistently as literate, original, poignant, humorous and philosophically deep as FJM.
