Imagine just going to work one day and getting a call that reveals you have been living with someone you didn't know at all, that everything was a lie and your child is dead. That poor woman.

What a nightmare. Her expecting to pick up her baby from daycare soon, only to be told her child never made it and is dead is truly haunting. The rug was pulled right out from under her that day. I don't get people like him. He could have just left his family. It's sickening. How did he EVER think he could get away with this?

nah, she did not look like a grieving mother at the end when they let her in to see him. id walk straight in and start punching the shite out of him, even if it was deemed an accident. he's still in the same clothes , she's in her pathology scrubs, so its obvious she's come from work. AND what mother sees that on tv at hubbys work, figures out its their son and doesn't just go ballistic. the narrator did not describe that this was her behaviour when she got to his work and saw them watching it on the news. Then when she found out where it was and she supposedly ran from his work up the few blocks he had driven on his supposed way to the cinema, did the narrator say she was screeching in disbelief at the scene He said ,as she approached, she then realised that it was indeed her son on the tv news but no description again of her loosing it. Also she commented to the day care teachers, after he didn't pick up her phone call, "he must have left him in the car". Remember ,at this point she has not gone to his work and seen the tv news, nor to the scene to see the police and taped off area. What made her mind go straight to the child being left in the car. ????? if I was her, I would have tried to imagine a million other scenarios before just jumping to that one, because she told police that even though he had shown her the tube videos of babies and animals left in cars two weeks prior, she never believed that he was planning to do that, so why did she just jump straight to that?????? toxic couples can both make grave decisions, its obvious the way she's holding him in that room, like she's his mother, she is co-dependent , and he is absolutely a narcissist. The fact she put up with his behaviour for so long, not including (so she says) all the actual infidelity ,is a sign of a person with codependence issues. and sometimes they will also do anything not to lose their partner. She says she was leaving, but who knows. Think about it. and im speaking from experience as someone having codependency issues. and just taking abuse to the max because the other option was to lose him and that was not an option to me. NO CHILDREN INVOLVED. and later I did have children at which point I was out of there but it still took me 11 months and literally myself and our baby being locked in a house in the middle of nowhere with no phone or escape, to finally break out when he left and run in 45 degree heat with my baby to a petrol station to ask for help. SO when it came to my child I did for 11 months keep him in a dangerous situation and his father hated him, he wasn't pretending to be a great dad, like this dude. and I've never forgiven myself for allowing that 11 months of self indulgence because anything could have happened, he was a hunter and I had already had rifle barrels pressed to my forehead and other crimes of domestic violence. So codependence is a strong emotion. JUST SAYIN.

I lived in a small town for a year. One of the new fathers took their baby to preschool one morning. Usually the mother did it but that morning she couldn't. He ended up driving to work, forgetting the baby in the car. By lunch time when he spoke to his wife, he realized his mistake when she asked about their son. It was too late. That man ended up commiting suicide because he truly just forgot. I'll never forget that couple as long as I live. To this day, the wife is unable to move on. She stayed single and childless because of her PTSD and can't even hold a job. It's awful for everyone involved.

It didn't happen to you, and it didn't happen to many others. But it can happen to anyone - and does. I have empathy for people who make mistakes such as this. It's tragic and sad and provokes strong feelings from people who may not understand how something like this can happen. But ul;timately a loving parent is capable of making a mistake such as this and we should promote ways to prevent these mistakes especially through raising awareness as to why it happens and what circumstances can lead there and let parents know that it CAN happen to you no matter how much you love your child.

@@AshleySmith-qk8rt it does happen, but it didn’t happen to this guy. He came BACK to the car after lunch to put light bulbs he had bought in the car and he would have surely known. When he got again back in the car at 4 the smell alone would have given it away even if he still didn’t know but I’m pretty sure the day care is at his work so he would have had to go there to pick up his son but either way he drove down the road for over a mile before pulling over and “realizing” he left his poor sweet child in there to die in the heat of the Atlanta summer. It’s tragic and yes parents are forgetful but if they were putting their children before themselves they wouldn’t have neglected them, because ultimately what it comes down to is neglect. And in any other situation a parent would get a negligible manslaughter charge at best…..but in this man’s case I believe he 100% is guilty of premeditation and cold calculating murder. Just my opinion.

Here's my long-winded hot take on this case. I want to preface this by saying that I have lost an infant child. I found my baby lifeless in his bassinet when I went to wake him for a nighttime feeding. He was 2 months and 5 days old. I can recount to you every single second of that horrible night - the 911 call, the feeling that the ambulance would never get there, the 911 operator walking us through infant CPR, my mother's scream as she did chest compressions, "there's blood coming out of his nose", me falling against the door as I screamed for my baby to wake up. I cannot fathom behaving even close to how Ross Harris did. There's shock, grief, disbelief, and the most crushing weight of guilt when you feel like you have failed to protect your baby. I have been in shoes quite similar to his, so watching his interrogation is physically sickening. I do, in fact, believe that some of the prosecution's affair evidence was inflammatory and they had more than enough reasonable suspicion he did this on purpose based on his Reddit history, his obsession with hot car deaths, and his p3d0phili@. My belief is that he decided to "test it out" but was operating with something akin to the logical fallacy, thinking it wouldn't actually work or, worst case, Cooper would be sick and he could be a hero for finding and saving him. What brought me to this, aside from what I feel was genuine disbelief that his plan worked on the first try, was him mentioning he even parked under a tree. This feels more like a sick experiment than an accident, and that's why he can tell himself it wasn't intentional. I do not and have never believed his wife had an inkling of the extent of what was going on. She struck me as a woman he had systematically broken down and convinced her that his shortcomings were her fault for not being/doing *fill in the blank*. He is a narcisstic child predator with no redeeming qualities. He is sick and deserves to be sentenced to the maximum extent of the law. I also hope that during his retrial they do not refer to his child exploitation as an extra marital affair again. That was predation and he undoubtedly caused lifelong trauma to his victims who were children and unable to consent.

I no longer conceptualize him as my "ex-boyfriend that gas-lighted me" but as "the predator that groomed, molested, and emotionally abused me." I was a lonely child with undiagnosed depression and it's not my fault that a man 12 years my senior took advantage of me and that no one in my family had the courage to even question his actions, let alone protect me in any way. Who knows how my family would have reacted differently if they had actually thought of me as the child I was.

I live in Arizona and worked in a children's hospital for over 12 years. Some of the cases that still haunt me to this day are those of children left in cars. In Arizona death from being left in an off car in the summer can take less than 5 minutes. I would teach in parenting classes to leave your wallet, purse, lunch, and/or work bag in the backseat before the baby was born to get you in the habit of checking the backseat. My mom also runs a daycare and call parents if they are 15 minutes late to drop off because her greatest fear is this happening to one of her daycare babies. I believe 99% of cases are pure tragic accidents but this case falls in the 1% for me. I truly believe he knew what he was doing. I've studied this case in all its detail and read all and every report. He knew what he was doing and did this purposely to his innocent son.

Vehicles can detect a car seat in the weight of an infant so if you leave your infant or toddler/child in the vehicle the car will notify you. Some cases are truly accidents unfortunately in this case I do not believe the baby was left accidentally based off of his computer searches in history.

My son had severe colic along with health issues, so always was crying or needed something. He was always close to me, usually being carried, and never out of sight (no support system). Before he was born I was paranoid something like this could happen to me, but him being a high maintenance kid I couldn't imagine it happening. I have seen parents with low maintenance kids that can leave them somewhere and they can play happily/quietly, nap a lot, etc that I could totally see an accident like that happening.

No "good father" spends his spare time assaulting someone else's children. He should never get out of prison, regardless if the death of his child was intentional or not. And the thought of a father doing what’s expected of a parent is different from what we’ve seen from media we think that this man is one of a kind when in reality he’s doing what is expected from a parent. Also probably cus when a father is seen with a kids one of two reactions we see in media is “He’s giving mom a break or that’s not his child” I have the same thought about society’s view of men caring for children in general but that’s for another day. I received some great advice while pregnant that may help avoid forgotten baby syndrome, and I hope it helps some other parents: while expecting, or even before that, start putting an essential item in the back seat of your car. For example, your purse, your wallet, or if you have a push to start car, your keys. Something that you cant be without and would have to go back to the car for if you were to forget them. Do it for every time you drive. This will train you to check the back seat for your important items and make you feel like you are missing something if you dont check the back seat. Now that I have my son, I still cant imagine leaving him in the car, but Im thankful I started that habit so that I would be way more likely to notice if I walked away from the car without checking the back seat.

@@Mel-wn9gb lol I think you misunderstood. They aren't more important. This is advice for *before* giving birth, so in this scenario the child isn't born yet. The idea is to train yourself with something, anything, that you are already accustomed to double checking and putting that in the backseat. Then when the baby is born, you are used to checking the back seat. The baby is absolutely important. The whole idea is to train the habit to check the backseat, which prior to having a child is not likely a part of one's routine.

Some of rhe biggest tells for me were: 1- The fact that he made such a big deal about them eating at Chick-fil-A. He wanted people to remember them being there & remember Cooper. So he could set up the accident by changing his normal route. 2- Him putting the light bulbs in the car at lunch. As has been mentioned already the smell would have been horrific & there's no way he wouldn't have noticed it at that point. I think he was actually checking to see if Cooper was dead yet. Even if Cooper was still alive the smell of feces, urine & vomit would have been awful. Disgustingly I think it's possible that Cooper was still alive at that point. So he of course "didn't notice" him in the car & call 911 then. If he was dead already I think he would have "made the discovery" then. 3- The fact he didn't notice the smell or see Cooper as soon as he got in the car after work. There's no way it took him that long to realize what happened. 4- The hot car video, searches he did on "a child free lifestyle" & telling people he wasn't happy being a married father. They were all done very shortly before the murder. The porn, affairs & him talking to underage girls was absolutely evil & grotesque but it wasn't as big of a red flag to the case as the other things that he did.

I think Leanna defended him because she had misplaced subconscious guilt. If she had left this horrible creep earlier and absolved him of the responsibility of caring for Cooper, he might not have murdered their child. She can’t face that idea and so she went into deep denial that Ross could ever do such a thing. Of course it isn’t Leanna’s fault, (and Harris might have murdered Cooper anyway to get out of child support, even if he didn’t have to perform regular childcare duties) but grief and denial do strange things to one’s mind. Ross’s horrendous acting, his obvious lies about not seeing or smelling the corpse of his son during the drive between work and the mall, or when he went out to check on the progress of his grotesque “experiment” at lunch, his prior actions such as researching hot car deaths, and his inappropriate behavior throughout the case ( *complaining about the hot cop car?!* REALLY?!). I haven't watched the whole film yet, but, being a true crime fan, I've watched various programs about this death. I always felt like the wife was in on it: they both wanted out of their boring marriage, and neither wanted to be saddled with a baby while they re-started their single lives. Her behaviour is very peculiar when she meets her husband who just - at best - 'forgot' their son in a hot car, comforting him, and seemingly not very concerned about her son. Furthermore, why was her first reaction when her son wasn't at daycare that her husband **must** have forgotten him in the car?! Really?! That was the default; that was the most likely explanation for this situation; that was the immediate place her mind went?! He can't turn her in otherwise he has to admit that he planned this too, and he can never appeal his own sentence.

I have always thought this, there is absolutely no way he could have driven a mile without noticing. I'm a vet tech, deceased animals begin to smell in about 45 minutes, in a temperature controlled building. It is an incredibly distinct odor and hits you in the face right away. Can't be missed. It's the returning to the car to place the light bulbs after lunch that clinches it for me. I am a rancher and have dealt with many dead animals in various stages of decomp. I am also a veteran and have seen and handled human bodies in various stages of decomp. While the smell is very distinct for any mammal while decomposing, the smell of a human being is just *more*. By noon on 18 June 2014 it was 90 degrees F in Vinings GA, which means the car was 135 degrees F. Baby Cooper was probably dead by 11 am. When a human dies, there is an evacuation of the bladder and bowels. If Cooper had been dead for 2 hours when Justin placed the light bulbs in the car, the smell of urine/feces/decomp would have been horrific. My opinion is that Justin intentionally left Cooper in the car to die. His reasons would have been #1-The fact that when he and Leanna divorced, Justin would be made to pay child support #2-He thought so little of Leanna as a woman and a human being that he wanted to hurt her in the worst way possible.

@@mollybevier Forgotten baby syndrome is usually caused by the parent going into autopilot and a change in their schedule which has left them with the baby at an odd time. If one is sleep deprived (I've never met a well-rested parent), under a lot of stress, or has a condition like ADHD the chances of them going into autopilot and forgetting things increases. Alarms and reminders help bring our attention back to the present and reduce the chances of tragic accidents. It's better *make sure* you wouldn't, than to just *think* you wouldn't, because everyone thinks "oh, it would never happen to me; I would never do that" (save for the subject of this video). And that goes for a lot of things in life; pilots have alarms and warnings in their aircraft, your car most likely has an alarm for urgent issues. I got about half way their and all of the sudden she started the most blood curdling scream. I pulled over rapidly and went into my back seat to check what was wrong. Her head was sweaty when I picked her up. I started stripping her. I got her down to her diaper and she finally felt better. She was just hot. She was hot in an air conditioned car. The cry she made I had never heard before. It was incredibly scary and it made me think about all those babies who had died in hot cars. The heartbreaking sound they would be making, the level of uncomfortablity. My heart breaks for them. Even when I don't have my baby, I find myself checking rear view mirror to look at where she would be throughout the drive. Assume you have them. Never assume you don't. A professor at a local college brought his 3 year old son along with him to work one morning, intending to drop him off at daycare before going to class. His mother was the one that usually drove him, but today he wanted to ride with his daddy. He was sleepy since it was early in the morning, so he slept the whole way there. It was the middle of summer, and after the father was done with work, he headed out to his car. He drove over to the daycare across the parking lot only for them to tell him he hadn’t dropped his son off and that they hadn’t seen him all day. He ran back out to his car to check the car seat and there he found his son deceased. The school had called the mom earlier in the day to say he hadn’t been checked in, but it was automatic messaging system and it malfunctioned for time to time so she didn’t think much of it. When the grandfather arrived on scene he actually had a heart attack himself seeing what had happened and was rushed to the hospital himself. The father attempted suicide twice after this happened. The entire community was devastated, especially the students and faculty, knowing the father was a good person and he had made an honest mistake that cost him his youngest son’s life. I still think about it all the time years later and hold my own babies just a little bit closer.

@@mafinalmessagechangedaworl7131it’s not. Normally in relationships, you should work on problems together. But when you date an abusive creep like this, they will start to push your boundaries after the first date. Say you don’t feel comfortable kissing on the first date, they’ll still lean in and try to kiss you to gauge how you’ll react to them obviously crossing a boundary. Let’s say another of your boundaries is when a date is always running late-they will purposely run late every time with some BS excuse to again, gauge your reaction to this. If you like wearing makeup or fancy clothes, they will ask you NOT to wear makeup on your next date and to wear sweatpants instead of a nice outfit. And the date will be at a nice expensive restaurant where you SHOULD get dressed up. This is a test to see if you’ll just give in to do as told. If they notice you consistently making excuses for their bad behavior and still staying in the relationship, they know they’ve got you. I have so much experience in this, I dated a guy who was abusive for 2 years back in my early 20s and looking back, I realized he was constantly setting up scenarios to see how I’d react to him doing so… it’s literally sick :( Now if I go on a date and see anyone trying to cross an obvious boundary I’ve told them about, I’m out ✌🏽 Anyone who respects you and wants to be with you will also respect your boundaries ❤

Just starting to watch this video, but from my childhood I remember whenever my parents left us or the cat in a car (like leaving for 10 min and it is rarely warm in my country, also we weren't that young, it was just easier to lock the doors but we could have opened them), they used a different alarm than usually. One was reacting to every movement inside the car and other just when you opened the door. I don't know anything about cars, so my memory might be wrong. But if it is true, then anyone who has kids would use the alarm that does react to movement inside the car whenever they think the car is empty.

This is my take too... I had an electric stove top while I was living alone in my apartment, and my two "worst fears" were that I forgot to turn off the stove top, and that I forgot to lock the door on my way out... reaching the entrance to the building (from the third floor), and then going back to triple check both (after double checking before I left, of course...) was a weekly thing. Now, I feel like I was extreme on the other end of the spectrum, and that's probably not the healthiest either, but absolutely, if that's your worst fear, you'll make sure.

@@sunnyhvar1992 someone good at tech, needs to make a device that can check your house and see if you left the stove on etc and door locked. I guess maybe a camera could take a look around if you were to have it pointed at certain things. It would be nice if they had that so people wouldn’t have to go all the way back in their apt or house. And if they had this screaming alarm that detected any living being in a car, either baby child or pet where people like this guy couldn’t fake that they accidentally left the baby, because the alarm would alert everyone around the car for miles, and never go off til the living being was rescued, and the alarm also would automatically call the authorities, including the fire department and EMTs and police. That way these people couldn’t do what they do. And then lie and say it was an accident.

The fact that he kept getting hyper focused on those videos had me thinking oh he did this purposefully, but his crying really made me think that. The reason I say this is I can remember when I was just 8 or so years old, passing a car accident. My cousin had her window down and so we heard this lady screaming for her daughter. Her daughter died in this accident and she knew it and I can still hear that tone in her voice to this day. It was so gut wrenching and you could hear her falling to pieces in those cries. I only heard her for about 5 seconds, but I can still hear it today. The moment I heard his cries, I couldn't hear that tone in his at all and it just felt so... like he was putting on a show. I agree with you that his cries sound fake because I don't feel the emotions behind the cry. I have read that when a parent loses a child, it is the hardest loss and the most painful one. I speak from experience because I am a mother of an Angel and when you lose your child, something inside you breaks. You lose a part of yourself. The cry you heard, came from me too when I lost my daughter. I also know the raw emotion from close family members upon learning of her passing and he didn't show anything near that. I remember a while back a boy was adopted from Russia who had some attachment issues that kids from orphanage’s often are afflicted with. The adopted Dad left the baby in the back seat after the adoption went through. Russia made a huge deal because of some trade restrictions that the US enacted on them, people from the us are now not allowed to adopt Russian children in any cases anymore. They probably thought to themselves “Well us Russian are not going to the US to adopt children, they are coming here” and they really don’t have anything else that they can take away from us. It’s sad because even at the time there were restrictions on adoptions, Russia would let any children that were not disabled be adopted outside of Russia similarly to China so really they were only passing off what they thought of as problem children they didn’t want anyways.

In Italy you are now legally required to have an alarm system for your baby/toddler car sit (sorry I'm not sure how it's called in English). The reason is that if you ever happened to walk away from the car and forget your child inside, this alarms system would detect the weight of the baby and start blaring and also send an alarm to your phone, if I remember correctly. We have friends who have a little girl and didn't buy the alarm when the law passed, we scolded them for it because we thought it was a great thing that everyone should have... A few days after they were stopped by the police (in Italy random checks are legal and totally normal, they just stop as many people as possible for no specific reason and you are free to go in a few minutes, unless they find something),the officers saw the baby sit and checked it and fined them for not having the alarm and for not having their toddler properly strapped in. I think this is just a great thing, why would you risk it when you know it could happen? I mean regardless of how rare it is, why would you want to be the one person who loses a child like that? How could you ever forgive yourself?

My car has something similar built into it from the manufacturer (Buick). It will chime several times real loud with a warning/reminder will appear on the dashboard screen telling you to look and check over the backseat as the sensors went off because something is in it. Each of its seats have sensors up and down the whole bench that detects as soon as any weight is put on it. It’s so sensitive that I’ve even had an umbrella in it to have it chime and flash on my dash as soon as I put my car in park. It’s something every single vehicle should have at this point. I know mine has the option to turn it off, with on as the default (I’ve never turned it off). It may only be a reminder, but it’s something that will at least help as there really is no excuse anymore for this stuff…

As a paramedic, I’ve been on the scene of something similar. There is no mistaking the true heartbreak and deep guilt a person feels when they accidentally take a life, especially that of a loved one. You can easily see the desperate pain in their eyes and as a first responder, it sticks with you afterwards. It’s hard to be around that kind of pain. I’ll bet those cops had a very strong suspicion that he wasn’t sincerely feeling those emotions, especially if they’ve seen it before. I don’t know how he thought he’d get away with it, clearly he’s not as smart as he thinks he is. Poor Cooper, he deserved so much better.
