I have never heard Abbie do her fish lip stim for so long, she really was enjoying herself. Just this morning I happened to make that celery /peanut butter snack with my grandsons. We use blueberries on the bodies, a raspberry for the head, and I know you didn't have them but what we do is take this a tiniest bit of peanut butter and put raisins on for the eyes we call them yummy bugs. Messy fine motor skill fun! Keep up the good work Dad you're being a great teacher

I was a nanny for 13 years. A year of that time I was an aid for a young lady who's been in an accident had brain damage and loss of all mobility from neck down. People don't understand the patient and understanding you have. The love you show your daughter for having that patience and trying and trying again no matter what to make her better. It's beautiful to watch truly.

This is so cool watching your day with Abbie. As a home care nurse I’ve taken my CP young adults to life lessons classes that also had Autistic and Downs adults and it’s so cool seeing you do the same things with Abbie. I wish there were more parents like you and your wife. So many parents will let them do whatever at home and they never knew what their child/young adults were able to do bc even though these kids/adults have a disability they are also smart.

That's the joy of homeschooling. Make the schedule around what works for you and your family. Our kids usually only schooled from 9 AM to 12 PM. They got all of their school work done in 3 hours a day because we didn't have to wait on a class of kids to catch up. You, as her parent, knows what works best for her. Great job! I use to love watching the videos of watching abbey learn and doing things like putting up groceries and such. I love seeing how far she comes! Its amazing! You could put rectangular placemats, even colorful ones she chooses, so she knows where to place everything much easier. With cutting it would be more natural if she places it then pulls towards her to saw the food rather than her pushing away. Just helps with natural movements when it works in your favor. And like utensils that are easier for her to use, like smaller tongs so she can have more control and a better grip when fishing out what she needs.😊 the peg board is brilliant. I don’t know if you made that, or if it is something you bought and multipurpose sit, but that’s something that could help many learning to cut, etc for use in culinary areas along with other areas of life

Love this video. Loved when Abbie pressed Dunkin Donuts for her name lol. The most popular incentives for Abbie are food, music or going for drives especially in the cart. Maybe have Abbie help make small pot of fruit, veggies, nuts or a special drink etc then maybe use those has incentives to reach the goals then expand the steps to reaching the goals has needed. Asa, I starting watching Abby 5 years ago when you were still in the old house. I don’t have a autistic child but you have educated me about autism so much. I cried when she was saying her name on her device. A little tip try putting a wet rung out wash cloth under the cutting board it should give it more grip. I am a chef and we use this in the kitchen all the time. Another way to sent her up for success is put a couple of scoops of peanut butter in a small Pyrex dish so she can get it better and she will know she uses that all up.

A lot of parents would just do these things like making snacks for their child whether on the spectrum or not because it's easier, less mess and quicker. I do admire how Asa takes the time to teach and let Abby do these things with the help needed. At this point the thing that will most benefit Abby is learning life skills. For example stirring the shaving cream is repeated when she stirred her macaroni and cheese. These are all related and innovative in that she learns a skill in many different ways.

One trick for keeping the cutting board from slipping is to dampen a towel or paper towel and put it under her board and it helps keep it in place. 😊

You are correct however Asa addresses this in another video and said that it wouldn't work as the board isn't meant as a chopping board and it could absorb the water ruining the board. I think that a grip mat that you can pick up for cheap will do the trick as it makes the task harder since the board is moving all over the place. I hope this answers your question.

Try adding couple drops of food coloring to the shaving cream when teaching stirring, seeing the results of it mixing will help....also maybe not as much in the bowl - easier to stir contents...Also a adding a rubber band to make a visible fill...Abby can touch and see

I’m sure someone has already said this but you can make your own texture for toothpaste. What I do for my kids is take whatever toothpaste they like and add the mouth wash they use and get a squeeze bottle from dollar tree to put it in. I’ve also seen people put it in a hand soap dispenser. But that way you can control how thick or thin you need it. Hope this helps. 🙌🏽Love watching y’all’s videos. ❤

When Abby was cutting the celery .. it reminded me when the kids would use those wooden Velcro fruits and veggies they sell .. where you cut through the Velcro .. I’m thinking now this was a way kids can learn cutting throw foods … hmmm lol. Great job Abby! AmazIng dad ❤️

Also, my son used to use the Crest Cinnamon Gel one. It sits upright and is red. It used to have big glitter looking particles in it. It was a bit more runny and easier for him to apply to the toothbrush independently. I googled it and this is what popped up on Walmarts site. "Crest Complete Whitening Liquid Gel Toothpaste, Cinnamon Rush, 4.6 oz. It says it's like almost $6

Regarding the more runny toothpaste, Basically you want to look for a liquid gel toothpaste. It comes in a small plastic squeezy bottle. So it looks different to all the other toothpastes that come in a tube. The 2 brands that I know of are Crest and Colgate. Both Walgreens and Walmart sell them.

Does Abby get distracted by music? Like wind chimes and birds singing? I also hear an owl….or some kinda bird. Maybe that is why she keeps looking up? Might be scared of birds? Or bigger birds.? Suggestion: I noticed Abbie could use some more resistance and stability with her kitchen supplies. I am a chef and taught monthly kid classes at a school. One thing that helps are heavy bowls or bowls with loop handles to hold on to. Another solution is a wet dish cloth or shelf mats under the bowls. It keeps the bowls and cutting boards from moving and will most likely increase her coordination and skills. I absolutely love how much you talk to Abbie during her tasks and the positive reinforcement she is receiving. I think it makes a big difference in her interest in the activity! I also like how you offered multiple options for leading the task: hand over hand, modeling, verbal prompting, and non verbal prompting. This is an exceptional video!

So first, this video is incredible for So many reasons. Try buying her toothpaste in a squeeze bottle. The texture is a bit runnier and the opening is smaller so when you do one good squeeze, a much thinner line comes out. Asa, you are an amazing father and teacher. Asa - you have more patience in your baby finger than most people in their entire body. What a wonderful dad - but please don't burn yourself out - it is so draining. You won't do anyone any good if you can't be on your game, and you have so much else to do that you also love. Finding Abbie a wonderful teacher that fits is critical - or my hope would be to get her out of the house and enrolled in a day program in the community. Good for Abbie to be around others, good for you and Priscilla to have some time for other priorities knowing she is well taken care of and learning important skills. Frankly, you already look a little worn out. Take good care. ❣

As a retired flight nurse I have been exposed to all kinds of people with just about every ability under the sun. Unfortunately, I know very little about autism except for very basic things. Abby is so beautiful and is such a joy. My question is, when she is involved in all kinds of activities, she often looks up and to her right. Is that unique to her or is it part of her autism.
