Fatherland (Controversial Coming Of Age Documentary) | Real Stories

Fatherland is a controversial coming-of-age documentary set in the remote South African bush. It follows a group of Afrikaner boys over 9 days at a military camp in the spirit of their fathers before them.
However, what starts out as basic training, fitness and camaraderie soon intensifies as the true nature of the camp is revealed and the boys are forced to question their place in the ‘New South Africa’.
These camps are designed to recreate a sense of Nationalism amongst the next generation of Afrikaaners, though as their training progresses darker ideological elements emerge revealing the stark realities of their training and indoctrination.
The film follows three particular boys and Col. Franz Jooste -an ex-SADF soldier that fought for his country pre 1994 - and focuses on the conflicting views developed by the boys. Under the strict leadership of their camp leader, they struggle to find their identity within their own communities and within their ‘rainbow’ nation at large. The children are forced to participate in a physically and mentally grueling process that tests their values, believes and identities on every level.

I am a military instructor with 30 years of experience in the SA Army, and currently hold the rank of Staff Sergeant. I am of the opinion that children in today's society need to learn the type of discipline, fitness, and teamwork as well as a sense of responsibility and attention to detail that young men used to learn from national service. I also believe everyone should learn self-defense (which is one of the subjects that I teach). However, from the evidence in this video, I am not convinced that this "training" teaches any of that. How do you teach children discipline when your own clothes are dirty and un-ironed, your boots are dirty, your hair stick out under your beret and you haven't shaved for at least a week? The correct command is " regs met driee afmarsjeer, regs om" not "rig op die regter vlank, regs om". You don't dress (rig) when you do movements on the halt. You dress when you are marching. A flank (for the purpose of drill) consists of the advance rank or retire rank when you are faced in the direction you are going to march off to. An instructor should at the very least be able to do the minimum requirement that is expected from the student, preferably more. The student does not always need to know the reason for specific training straight away, but the instructor does. A lot of this "training" seems to have no purpose, and in my opinion is a waste of time. You are putting these children under a false impression to think that they have done "military training" like their fathers and grandfathers have done, because it doesn't even come close to the first day of actual military training. I am not saying this to be negative or to criticize, but you are not delivering what you promise.

i wanted to point out a quick correction to the translation in this film of the word "Boer". Boer means farmer in Afrikaans. It does not mean any and every Afrikaner. So when they say 2,000 Boers have been murdered, it is not that 2,000 white people have been murdered, it is 2,000 FARMERS who have been killed. Think about that number and what it means for a nation as a whole. Who supplies food to everyone in a nation? The farmers. Killing farmers isn't getting the nation anywhere. Good for their parents and those who run the camp for wanting to pass down importance of maintaining strength and discipline to the next generations.
