Great video. Just a warning to anyone who wants to do this. Please make sure you fully clean out the drum before cutting into it. I knew a man and his son that were killed instantly when they went to cut into one. Flammable fumes were still in the barrel and when they cut into it, it exploded. Wash it thoroughly with soap and water and let it completely air dry and leave the fill cap off before cutting.

Good job. I’ve made a couple of UDS’, if you added some air intake to the bottom it’ll run better. I drilled three 1” holes two inches from the bottom and welded a sliding “door” (flat bar) at the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions. Unless the door is your air intake.

All they need to do is use some charcoal in the bottom and just chucks of wood for a lower temp smoke, maybe set up a removable plate to block the flames. It might need adjustable vents to better control the temps also

They didn’t use it correctly as a smoker. You’re not gonna run a smoker over 300° and have actual smoked food, more grilled at that point.

I love how it comes full circle for me, I am Indonesian and looking for a DIY drum smoker video. Found a few Indonesian videos but I don't quite trust anything Indonesian. So I went to look for an English video (because higher quality standards for product, video, audio, and materials). Little did I know until 10mins in that the drum is Indonesian of origin. But hey, at least it's food grade! The Indonesian ones are literally made from rusted petrol drums. Yum, extra carcinogens.

Make a smoke box from an old steel ammo can. Lie the can on it’s side. Drill a few 6-8mm holes in a row 2cm up from the ‘new’ top and bottom. Put a few easy light briquettes inside and light them, then shut the lid once they get going. Sprinkle some wood chips of your choice on the top and it will generate plenty of smoke.

Can you make an Offset smoker that looks like a choo-choo Train? I think if you have a square fire box, and then put a big square box above that for roasting with, you would be pretty close to the right shape. Then you just need big wheels and some trim

I would suggest being very careful where the drum comes from (I would also recommend only single use drums, so you know for sure what was kept in there). IF you can't, and you really want to go ahead, remember to wear full PPE and open air to clean it out. I would suggest stripping the metal itself a bit whether through grinding or what not AFTER cleaning it out with soap and water extremely well and scrubbing it (because, before, there could be something in there that has a low flash point and will ignite). You need to absolutely make sure there are no hazardous materials, and that's a hard thing to do.

What about that lining on the inside? A long burnout of the inner lining wont work as it contains a powered coating so the only way to remove that lining is to scrub it out after the initial burn until you get bare metal. Then coat it with any food oil and burn it again to create a protective layer on the bare metal.

I would like to ask for an advice. I also made a diy smoker using a barrel, we tried to burn it but it did not blackened as yours. Now since the barrel was use for perfume storage, there are still lingering scent of perfume that i know would stick to the meat if i used it for smoking. What are the things i could do to remove all the perfume scent?

1:07 Before you do this, make damn sure the old contents of the drum were not flammable. Vapors can be just as explosive as the former contents, and guys have gotten killed cutting into "empty" drums that exploded. I was just reading about a guy in Pennsylvania who got killed by a burn barrel last week. And I know of another incident in Iowa that killed a man who was welding on top of a barrel, using it as a workbench. Filling the drum with water before cutting into it can displace explosive vapors, if done correctly.
