Surah Al Kahf (The Cave) is almost entirely devoted to a series of parables built around the theme of true faith versus blind materialism. The key-phrase of the whole surah, "We have willed that all beauty on earth be a means by which We put men to a test, [showing] which of them are best in conduct" (18:7), is most clearly formulated in the parable of the rich man and the poor man. The story of the Men of the Cave and their devotion to the scriptures clearly illustrates the importance of the word in strengthening faith: being then deepened into an allegory of death, resurrection and eternal life. The story of Moses and the unknown sage reveals the ultimate limitation of worldly knowledge and, hence, humanity's reliance on moral guidance and spiritual insight conveyed through divine revelation. And, finally, the story of Dhu l-Qarnayn ("The Two-Horned One”) takes us on a journey: 22:46 Have they, then, never journeyed about the earth, letting their hearts gain wisdom, and causing their ears to hear? After travels in the decadent West and naked Far East, Dhu l-Qarnayn reaches a place, “between the two mountain-barriers” where he helps the people build a defensive wall against the forces of Gog and Magog. In the preceding story of Moses and his search for knowledge, the journey becomes increasingly difficult after losing the fish and so they return to the rock by the sea. Muhammad withdrew to the cave, Jesus walked in the wilderness, and Moses wandered across the desert where, at the junction between the two seas, they found the word of God. 26:63 Thereupon We inspired Moses thus: "Strike the sea with thy staff!" - whereupon it parted, and each part appeared like a mountain vast. As worldly knowledge accumulates over the generations through the cumulative efforts of predominantly secular minds, the living word withers and gets left behind. Men of great mental capacity and strong intuition, Messengers bear the teachings of their people into the wilderness where, at the rock of devotional faith, they bring the word back to life between two seas of knowledge. Those lost in the town, however, aren't really interested and some actively oppose the message thereby incurring the wrath of God. The message-bearer leads the faithful to salvation and spiritual development progresses. This process entered its final phase with the revelation of the Quran and as science reaches the very limits of human comprehension the "ayat mutashabihat" have been left somewhat behind. 3:7 He it is who has bestowed upon thee from on high this divine writ, containing messages that are clear in and by themselves - and these are the essence of the divine writ - as well as others that are allegorical. The above passage is the key to the understanding of the Quran. The "ayat muhkamat" or “essence of the divine writ” are those verses that comprise the fundamental principles underlying the message of the Quran, in particular, its ethical and social teachings. The "ayat mutashabihat" or "allegorical passages" are those verses that are expressed figuratively, with a meaning that is metaphorically implied but not directly stated. And it is only through faithful application of the clear moral teachings (the iron blocks) - built-up between intellectual endeavour and deep contemplative thought - that the spiritual insight contained within the allegorical passages (the protective copper) can be fully understood and finally applied.... It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Messenger of 'Allah designated Dhul-Hulaifah as the Miqat for the people of Al-Madinah, Al-Juhfah for the people of Ash-sham, Qarn for the people of Najd, and Yalamalam for the people of Yemen. He aid: "They are for them and for those who pass by them who are not of their people who intend to perform Hajj and 'Umrah. Best Dua for Seeking Forgiveness (Syed-ul-Istighfar) Shaddad bin Aus (Radhi Allah Anh) said: Prophet Muhammad (Sal Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said, “The best supplication for seeking forgiveness (Syed-ul-Istighfar) is to say: اَللّٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ رَبِّيْ ، لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِيْ وَاَنَا عَبْدُكَ ، وَاَنَا عَلَی عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ اَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ ، اَبُوْءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ ، وَ اَبُوْءُ بِذَنْبِي ، فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ ، فَاِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ Allâhumma Anta Rabbî, lâ ilâha illâ Anta, khalaqtanî wa anâ 'abduka, wa anâ 'alâ 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, a'ûdhu bika min sharri mâ sana'tu, abû'u laka bini'maktika 'alayya, wa abû'u bidhanbî, faghfir lî, fa innahu lâ yaghfirudh-dhunûba illâ Anta O Allah! You are my Rabb. There is no true god except You. You have created me, and I am Your slave, and I hold to Your Covenant as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge the favors that You have bestowed upon me, and I confess my sins. Pardon me, for none but You has the power to pardon Whoever makes this dua during the day with firm belief in it and dies on the same day (before the evening) he will be one of the dwellers of Jannah (Paradise); and whoever makes this dua during the night with firm belief in it and dies before the morning, he will be one of the dwellers of Jannah (Paradise).” [Al-Bukhari]
