If you don't have a hanging rack, I use regular plastic hangers and hang them from any surface that's free (usually doorways or on the edge of my ironing board). The starching tip is something I learned from Kimberly YEARS ago, and although it takes some additional prep time, has saved me hours and hours of misery trying to get pieces to "work." Still one of my favorite tips!

First, thank you for the video. It was a good reminder of how I should be ironing. There were two things I was hoping you would mention in this video. #1 - I wish someone had told me that after sewing that first seam I should check the size of the unit I created. In this case, sewing two 3 1/2" strips together should result in a piece that is 6 1/2" wide after pressing (3 1/2" + 3 1/2" - 1/2" used in the seam). I didn't like the shock of finding out all of the blocks I created were the wrong size when I was done sewing them all! #2 - You mentioned that you make an effort not to pick up and move the fabric you just straightened. It really helps me to pick up and move (rotate) my mat.

I am right handed. I have some left shoulder problems. Because of this my left arm is a little weak. I put a weight toward the top of my ruler. This does a great job in keeping the ruler from slipping while cutting. I picked up that tip from another you tube quilt series.
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary! Yes! It definitely helps to adjust and to what works best for you! If you're cutting a long piece of fabric you can start with your hand closer to you for the first cut and then adjust so you're putting weight higher up on the ruler as you cut farther away from you.

I found a folding drying rack at Bed Bath and Beyond. My favorite way to dry my starched fabric is to hang it on an extra curtain rod I hung directly over the tub and use thick hangers to prevent deep creases in the fabric. The curtain rod is high enough so you can still use the shower when I’m not drying fabric. The best part, I can sure dry a lot of fabric at one time 👍

@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Great question! Some fabrics do have a right side and wrong side, but since we're using solids for this series both sides are the right side on them. It's only prints that have a wrong and right side, and it's pretty easy to tell as one side is more faded than the other.

Thank you for this beginner video. Now I need recommendations on how/where to buy a sewing machine
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl! You can start quilting with any sewing machine that has a straight stitch. What brand and model mostly depends on your budget and preference. You can easily start sewing with a low cost machine from any store, such as the Brother and Singer brands. EverSewn is a brand we like that has a wide range of sewing machines for any budget, and they have the Sparrow 15 which is in the price range of other widely available brands. As you advance, at that point you may feel like you want to upgrade, in which case we suggest you visit your local sewing machine dealers to try out different brands and find your personal preference. If you're considering EverSewn you can find them online here: www.fatquartershop.com/quilting-notions/sewing-machines-and-accessories

Hi Kimberly, In your cross-stitch video you mentioned that you're having trouble with your hand. If it's your cutting hand, I wonder if sequeezing the handle to keep the blade exposed may be the problem. I've never used one of those before but I'm assuming you have to continue squeezing it as you cut. I use the simpler model that is on the left in your video.
@patsycremer12785 жыл бұрын
This cutter also locks in the open position. You don't have to hold it open.
@marypickard25305 жыл бұрын
Great video. When you trim the finished block, do you measure to make sure the finished size is correct? I see references to squaring up blocks. If you cut and sew your pieces accurately, don’t you stand a chance of making the block smaller than desired finished block size? Thanks
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary! Good question! When we square up the block we are really just looking to remove any fraying or random strands. We place the edge of the ruler right on the edge of the fabric so we are cutting just past the edge and anything that's hanging off the edge is cut off. Hope this helps!
@leahg45965 жыл бұрын
Do you use the lines on your mat when you make the first cut to straighten the edge? If not what do you use to know your ruler is straight before you cut?
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Leah! To make your first cut to straighten the edge, place your ruler about 1/4 inch in on the side of the fabric that you'l be cutting, then line up your ruler perpendicular to the bottom. Making it line up with the bottom will help make sure that you achieve a straight line with a 90 degree corner. Hope this helps!
@BuckeyeNan5 жыл бұрын
The first cut is most confusing since there isn't a straight guide/ edge. Line the bottom of the ruler or one of the lines located on the bottom edge of the ruler up with bottom of the fabric. This makes the ruler straight by lining up on that bottom fabric edge.

Have been quilting for a few years but have learning some new things today, especially about the starching. Do you starch precuts also?
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gayle! We don't recommend starching precuts because it will cause the precut to shrink unevenly and it would need to be cut down to make it square again. That would work if you need a small size and you want to use precuts, but if you're trying to use the precut for its exact size it's not recommended. Hope this helps!

It helps the fabric and thread to relax.
