Maybe my math is wrong, I'll need to try it out to check -- buy why can't you cut two of each unit from a 10" layer cake? First cut would be 2-1/2" x 10" strip, then subcut into four 2-1/2" squares; next cut another 2-1/2" strip and then subcut into two 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles; and lastly, from the remaining 5" x 10" fabric, cut two 4-1/2" squares. You'd yield twice as much from the layer cake with only slivers left over as waste. Cute pattern!

To make a quilt the size shown (56 1/2" square) they end up using half of 36 layer cake squares, so you could also do it with a Jolly Bar which is the size of half a layer cake, or make more blocks and make a much bigger quilt.

Looking at the pattern it would be better to use 2 charm packs. You'd have a lot less waste. Use one pack for the 4½" squares and the second pack for the strip and two squares. Or cut your layer cake in half and save for another project.

Thank you for creating a FREE beginner-friendly pattern where I will actually have some scraps from my pre-cut to play with later! I really like this quilt design, it looks more complicated than it is to make (I hope!). Gorgeous fabric choice here too. I think I'll make the background border smaller, and add a large outer border of one of the prints in the Layer Cake. (Although I have been buying fabric and tools for quilting since 2012 with dreams of making all kinds of quilts, I have only ever finished and bound 2 quilts ... and finished a few more quilt tops only; I still have the quilting to do on those. But I've so far made nothing too tricky. Baby steps!). Thanks for your Layer Cake Lollies tutorial, Kimberly, I appreciate all the freebies you create to encourage us 'nervous' quilters. ~Diana K.

My thoughts exactly. Tomorrow I will begin cutting, so I made a sample block and discovered that if the 10" square is carefully cut to begin with, there is no need for trimming to straighten and far less waste.

You can get the quilt pieces from a Jolly Bar. Just cut the C and D squares first from 2.5 x 5" (one end of the jolly bar) . Then trim remaining 5 x7.5 to 4.5 x7.5 and cut 4.5" square (A) and then 2.5 x4.5 rectangle (B).

I had a great idea for the “alphabitties”. Wouldn’t it be great to have a Velcro like adhesive of some kind on the back of the letters so they stick to the fabric? My pieces sometimes fall off, or get unorganized. This would also be great for those that utilize their design boards on their walls to layout their blocks!
@mrs.christinaroedl6823 жыл бұрын
A felt backing will do the same without damaging your fabric or pulling at your batting. If you want to try it out I can think of 2 ways. 1. felt stickers used for chair backs, 2. Felt sticker sheets from hobby lobby , cut peel stick.

If you were not using a layer cake you could also do this as a disappearing 9 patch. Follow pattern to make the sweet, then the next (candy) blocks, and these would form the 4 corner squares of a 9 patch. You need 4 more pieces of background to alternate around the edge of the 9 patch, and a contrast square for the centre. Assemble 9 patch and cut into 4. Reassemble to resemble this pattern. If you don’t want the background areas and centre squares to be so wide, make your 9 patch with narrower rectangles of background, and a correspondingly smaller centre square.

Two charm packs, no waste. 1 charm - the 4.5 inch sq. The 2.5 strip and squares from the other, you'd have no waste.
@bethk76483 жыл бұрын
As Kimberly states at the very start, she is gearing this for a beginner, so the layer cake makes sense, rather than your suggestion for someone more experienced.
@Ronibearable3 жыл бұрын
@@bethk7648 So, you are saying that a beginner can cut fabric from a 10 inch piece, but is incapable of cutting fabric from a 5 inch piece? WOW! Sorry beginners, Beth K thinks that you are incapable of math and geometry. But Beth, maybe you are right, let us extrapolate out your theory. So, you are saying that a beginner MUST use 10 inch piece.. SO 1. How then are they cutting two 2.5 squares then from the strip Kimberly said to cut out of the 10 inch piece? Hmmm? 2. Given that there is a lot of waste ... as she indicates in the video "you can save this for another project"...TWICE... how then are they going to cut up THAT less than 10 inch waste for another project since they can't figure out how to cut a smaller than a 10 inch piece? 3. AND, what if said beginner simply can not afford a layer cake, and needs to save money... how are they going to make this lovely quilt? LASTLY, there is at least one other comment(s) on here about another party that stated she was going to make this using the two charm packs received in her last sew sampler box, and another person said, hey, you could use a Jolly bar for this pattern.. both comments left days prior to your rude comment here insulting beginners... yet you did not comment to those people how they are harming the poor beginners. How bout this, let the beginners fend for themselves in the math and geometry dept, I think they know what their skillset is in those arenas. Is your middle name Karen? Thanks Beth Karen, I am sure some beginner out there values your defense of them. GOOD GRIEF.
