Faux ceramic birdies with polymer clay

This technique is very simple but the results are so interesting. I use Varathane Gloss varnish but I'm sure you can use whatever varnish you usually use with your polymer clay.

Yes, they can be tricky with thicker clay and some kind of release is necessary.

I think it helps cure the varnish. I find the finish is harder after baking and maybe a little better attached. I think it just speeds the curing

I believe the Varathane I use is safe to bake. Blue Bottle Tree is my go to for this kind of info and this article states it can be baked to accelerate curing. thebluebottletree.com/varathane-best-polymer-clay-sealer/

Polymer clay is flexible if it's not really thick. Will the varnish flex with the clay once baked? Thanks for sharing the tutorial, I love it and can't wait to try it.

I guess it depends on the type of varnish you use but I think the varnish would crack

My results weren't good. I don't know if my varnish is old, but when I tried to mix in my acrylic, some of it was solid and left tiny unmixable bits, it never mixed smoothly Or, maybe it was the paint. Also, I missed the important step of letting it dry first! LOL. So I'm going to try it again today. I love your birdie cutters and plan to buy a few in a week or two. @@ClayBoxSupplies

@@patriciawiley99 lol, yes very important to let it dry. You can always do it after baking though and leave it to cure for a while. I know the paint I used works great, Jacquard Lumiere Metallics
