I guess they left out southern Europe? Western Europe is one of the richest regions in the entire world. That’s mainly due to the energy and services sectors. But countries like Germany & the Netherlands also produce a lot of high end machines. In Germany it’s mainly cars of course. The Netherlands produces some of the greatest high tech machines in the world, a great example is the tech company ASML. All this combined let’s The Netherlands, Belgium & Luxembourg alone have the same economic power as Russia. We simply invest our money more into the people, like healthcare, infrastructure & education. Our armies in the west are smaller, but more advanced, and you can see this in the Ukrainian battlefield. The Ukrainian army started using western weapons, and are now obliterating the Russian army. Sometimes size isn’t everything.

Germany just don’t have the strongest military because we are still under regulations after both world wars. Our military is not allowed to have a total of 370.000 personal (active and reserve). If you consider the fact that Germany have the best weapons, tanks, Jets, etc. In the world, Best Ingenieurs, high quality manufacturing and many other factors, Germany could easily have the best Military in the world. But like I say, Tank manufacturing, weapon manufacturing, military buildup, everything is restricted by the „Zwei plus vier“ Regulations. It’s a regulation between the Winner nations of WW2 ( USA, UK, French and Russia) to make sure that the German military don’t get powerful again, we all know what happens when Germany have a powerful army..

The comparison as presented doesn't make any sense whatsoever. There is, at the moment, almost zero contact between the eastern part of the EU and Russia, so putting these countries into the same block with Russia doesn't make any sense, not to mention that it is insulting to do so from the author of the video you are reacting to. Americans should REALLY figure out what the European Union is and that the iron curtain they were used to has shifted way more to the east compared to where it used to be. When you say "westernised", it applies to the eastern flank of the EU/NATO countries as well.

You only count Western Europe for military but you also forget the North end the south..;
@rhiannnann60412 жыл бұрын
I can, kind of, answer your question of the western vs eastern europe military numbers. Like the budget thing. As we can see this comparison list includes Russia as part of Eastern Europe (even if majority of RF territory is in asia...most of its population lives in the european part & most wealth is also there) The thing is a big chunk of the numbers for east europe (number of tanks, war planes, and other equipment) are russias. For example 10,000 tanks of the 30,000 & around 2,500 of the 4,500 aircraft are theirs on this list All other countries together have about 20,000 tanks & 2,000 planes. But...as anyone who has been keeping an eye on the current war in Ukraine knows (those who did not know it before)...in russia the numbers include even the scrap metal. So though they have a large number of military equipment, a large chunk of it is very old, and quite a lot of it is not really functional, cause it is not maintained. Hence (partly) the huge "inflated" numbers for eastern part of Europe on this list. I also assume this list was created before this years war. The numbers have changed, and are changing now. Many countries in Europe have increassed their military spending...cause things have changed. But Europe is still "one team"... their armies are all still "flexible" and all those both is east and west who are part of NATO are basically part of one big miitary (like currently a lot more american and west european troops stationed in the easten member countries...due to the situation with that one big neigbour) Whole of Europe spends so little on military budget compared to US, because their armies are so much smaller compared to US. Their armies are also set up different, and they do not have big, expensive "toys" (aircraft carriers) either And so far Eastern Europe (due to having been behind iron curtain/under russian occupation for 50 years, while the western countries developed) has been "poorer" (smaller GDP, smaller in many ways), but that has been changing over past 30 years...they are slowly catching up to the west, and by now, for example Poland has become one of the big players. But there are many small countries, so smaller militaries, so smaller budgets. Also...nuclear powers have to have bigger budget, cause maintaining them is expensive. Only Eastern European country who has them is russia (their budget makes up most of eastern parts total budget). You will notice that the nuclear powers (UK, France) have the highest budgets from the western european countries (but not for this reason alone, it just also plays a role). There are many reasons for all this, and it is all multi-layared topic. But those are some of the "reasons" And of course Germany is on the list so often cause it is a highy developed state/economy, and they owe it all a lot to also their industry and export (cars, electronics, etc...a lot of world famous brans are made/created in Germany). Though yes, service sector is still the biggest contributor to their GDP (wealth) ;) PS. Also..MOST of European countries, especially northern and eastern are quite NON religious. According to polls both France & Germany in west & Sweden & Estonia in north & east have the most people in EU who consider themselves to be atheists. So, in general, not a lot of people in Europe go to church & pray (compared to USA for example). And if we exclude Russia (a huge country by land area, and hence also large population) from the eastern parts population then 297 million minus 145 million leaves us with 147 million for the rest of eastern part...which is a bit less than western parts populaton. Cause more smaller countries here. Cause I suspect that though on the map only european part of rus is coloured they count the whole countries population in this list.
@FaithlessDeviant2 жыл бұрын
be careful comparing budgets, pensions are included in the budget in USA where as pensions doesn't fall in under most other countries budgets because that belongs under social budgets. I believe I've heard that around a third of the US military budgets is used for pensions and so forth.

The criteria of what is considered Western and Eastern Europe often get muddled up. Reducing it this way only makes sense from the historical perspective of the former Western and Eastern blocks in times of the division of Europe. Grographically, you would have to add Northern, Central and Southern Europe. Countries like Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Poland, Slovakia ate largely more Central or Central/East than Eastern European. Most of these are Slavic countries but they are in the heartland of Europe and have close cultural links with their Western neighbours,, even more nowadays.

Except Napoleon, french combat style was allway surrender :) Comparing of military is allways problematic in Europe. Most of western and central coutries are part of NATO. Than you cant only make summary of eastern and central Europe like this because most of central and eastern countries are enemies of Russia. And we dont need full scale army, we have specialists for NATO missions and small amount of classic military - in Czech republic we have maximum 100 tanks, 12 functional jet planes and so on but we have specialists against chemical weapons, military hospitals, commandos style. About Tanks - most of them are Russian but as we see now in Ukraine 90% of them are just trash from 70ties and older. Russian army have still barbarian tactics - Nas mnogo - We are many.
