Turbo lag is the time it takes from losing turbo boost pressure (say when changing gear) and boost pressure re-established. Some turbos it is noticeable others it is small. The problem with the safety for the fans is it would be impossible. With F1 it is small (ish) tracks. But with rally it is upwards of 100km of public road per stage so there is no way they could add barriers for all of it. It's pretty safe now as there aren't so many spectators and it is run better. Each race is around 300-350 km, and usually has between 15-22 stages. Although most stages are raced twice in a rally event, it's still +150 km of public road, you'd need to fence! A rally event is like this: Race stage A. drive on public road, to the next stage. Race stage B. drive on public road, to the next stage. Race stage C drive on public road, to the next stage. Race stage A, B & C again, then continue with the next stages. ALL is on public roads.

Turbo lag is essentially that a turbo has to wind up (build up pressure) to produce the full power. This means that turbo cars respond slower to throttle inputs compared to non-turbo cars. You also have the problem that the turbo generally produces most of it's power in higher revs, that can make turbo cars weak in lower revs. The sudden change in power from low revs to when the turbo kicks in in higher revs can also additionally be a drivability challenge, as it can lead to accidentally accelerating more than you intended to, which can lead to a snap of oversteer if you're in a corner.

Fun fact: After Group B was already cancelled, it was discovered that the cars were literally too fast for humans to drive on certain stages. Of the fastest rally events ever, all are WRC, and you have to go to the 21th place, to find a Group B event. Now, this is still very impressive, but my assumption is, the fastest Group B were faster, in a straight line, whereas modern WRC1 cars have a top speed of ca. 200 km/h, but mostly use gearing, that lowers the top speed, to between 180-190 km/h. turbo lag: basicaly a turbo works by take the exhaust throught a tubine wich the conects to an air pump via a crank shaft. If exhaust flows through the turbo the turbo spools up an sucks air into the engine. Normaly the turbo only funktions if the driver presses the throttle. This way the engine can produce more power. The time the turbo need to spool up is called turbo lag.
@anub1s15 Жыл бұрын
also this is really more of a 80's / 90's...probably 00's things modern turbo's are so small they have almost no lag and other advances in shenanigans to keep the thing spinning or spin up faster. generally a bigger turbo will produce more power but also have more lag and for regular cars you don't need/want a lot of power you want extra efficiency which a small turbo can help with (or to turn a horrible underpowered engine in to a passable one which I feel is most modern eco cars in a nutshell)

To simplify the "turbo Lag" thing they are talking about. You basically have two types of forced air induction to an engine, turbos and superchargers. Turbos take time to spool up a turbine because it harvests its energy from exhaust gasses from the engine, where as a supercharger is connected directly to the driveshaft by a belt. Superchargers will generally have better instantaneous power but lower top end power, and turbos have less immediate power but higher top end power. The lag basically refers to the time it takes to deliver that initial boost of power to the engine.

Turbo lag : as turbo is using exthaust gasses and lower revs there is no enough exthaus gasses to drive turbo to generate boost. Audi's "special valve" was to feed fuel to exthaus and igniting it so turbo were running always higher speed than engine speed and exthaust gasses would otherwise allowed it. Lag is the time it takes to engine rev up enough to run turbo fast enough to get boost. Just to let you and others know, that modern WRC-cars are faster than the Group B-cars. Current series of rally cars produce about 500 hp with hybrid boost. Group B was very dangerous for the drivers and fans, some teams didn't make sure that the cars were as safe as they could be (looking at you Lancia) and the technology wasn't on the level as it is today. Still amazing cars.

How do you still have adds on your youtube ? You are posting videos ! I am not posting shit and have no adds. I have no idea how much it costs but I got A youtube premium membership from a friend with giving him a Disney+ account. I have prime video to (charing an account to). The most expensive here in europe where I live is Netflix (but I have 5 accounts for one subscription... sharing only 2 beside my account) Do you always have that McLaren pullover or do you do 3 videos one after the other ?
