and Part 2 here: • Rebuilding my 7M Cylin...
In this video, Danny demonstrates a very uncommon yet less invasive way to straighten my warped 7MGTE cylinder head. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. The head was warped fifteen thousands (0.015) and the cams were seized in the head.
HUGE THANKS to Danny Soliz of Hill Country Performance for coming in on a Saturday and giving me 4 hours of his time to make this video, and many more to come!
For more information, and to bring your engine to HCP, check them out on Facebook here: / hillcountryperformance
And special thanks to subscriber @LurkMoar101 for sharing your experiences working for 15 years as a machinist - your comment was seen by Danny and encouraged him to let me film the entire process!

Yep. This is why all the younger people coming out of trade schools and college... Still need to listen to the "old farts". There is so much knowledge out there, that no one person will ever be a single source. Keeping this information alive is crucial to keeping things moving in the future.

TV reality show... Please, don't try this at home. Love it. Experience trumps mechanical education 1000 percent. ASE master tech certification is a good thing but no man hours on a engine build is about the same as hiring me. Hand an air cooled german engine to a regular mechanic and find out what real knowledge means

That is impressive. Very touchy, feely, instinctive, experience driven BLACK ART procedure. I have worked with a lot of aluminum over the years and it can be tricky stuff. The point where it becomes malleable before it melts or cracks is very narrow. I did a little reading and it looks like maybe as little as 200 deg F between good and junk. An oxy/acet torch is around 6000 deg F. So to state the obvious that is tricky to do and a privilege to watch done well. I've spent many years honing my skills as a machinist and Danny has obviously done like wise. Micheal

Great video, Faye. I've heard of head straightening before, but never like this. This guy is a real wizard. It's also very cool that he's willing to share his knowledge with others. He makes a great point in that, this technique can be practiced on a scrap head, just to get a feel for what is possible. Looking forward to the next episode. Keep up the great work.

BINGO. Danny does it the exact same way I used to, even down to locking it in with an oxy torch. Excellent to see good practice is followed around the world! Thank you for the insight Faye and Danny. You can also tell Danny I only ever killed one cylinder head when straightening too. A Toyota 22R head came in badly bent, and somewhere in it's lifetime someone had a go at straightening it before because I could see a shitload of overly melted points down both sides of the head. On the first couple of pumps on the press the thing snapped clean in half, no word of a lie. The thing only had 3 cam journals so it would probably have been better to try and line bore it rather than try and press almost 80 thou of warp out of it, but live and learn. Customer got a better head out of it and I learned never to try and polish a turd.

You make me want to have my own unit again, "just for my own cars to work on" . They say we all have so called gifts, something we are good at. You have a gift, not only for your passion of the petrol head way of life, but how you put everything together and explain in a way that even the less knowledgeable of us can learn and put into practice. He is a pro at this. My machine shop used to do the same method 30 years ago for Triumph Dolomite heads. However my Triumph parts supplier said if the head face is good then why bother straightening, when you bolt it back on it will straighten itself. So from that point on I used to bolt on bent heads with good surfaces and never had a problem with blown gaskets. Sometimes there is a case just to bolt it back on.
