Lessons Learned !! Supra Update and what EVERYONE should know before resurfacing a cylinder head!

In this video, I give you an update on my precious Supra, and show y'all why she has been constantly breaking down and not producing the power I had expected of her after an engine rebuild.

That machinist is a real character! Outside the box thinking about how parallel planes are equally affected with warpage and the way he explains it was phenomenal to hear. And then his explanation about how he would proceed to correct it. (Retired A.S.E. Master Auto & Truck Technician and working small shop owner.)

This is very interesting. I have heard people go on about putting a thicker copper head gasket without flattening the head and torqueing it so it flattens out enough. Now I understand what they are talking about, the top of the head gets affected when one surfaces the bottom and more damage results. It's a full head job or nothing.

I was a cylinder head machinist for 15 years and this man is correct. Nearly every aluminium OHC head that's seen huge heat or compression issues will need straightening before anything else. Not all mind you, but most. We never line bored the cam tunnel however, we only ever honed them so that we didn't take out too much material. Straightening the head involved heating the head up on a press with a jig and then locking it into place by melting certain points along the cylinder head. When you go to surface the face after this it would blow you're mind just how badly these chunks of metal could warp. We constantly checked that the cam/s turned with all caps on during the entire overhaul process, as well as checking that the bucket bores (if used) were also round (straightening the head also threw these bores out of round too which could lead to jammed tappets and open valves, simple honing fixed this too)Then you may have the issue of the head being too thin from multiple shaves which can lead to timing belt/chain failures and valve to piston clearances. After pressure testing the waterways, fixing up the guides, seats and final surface the entire head would be assembled and cams checked again to make sure everything was free and smooth. The only other problem we use to have with alloy heads was softness. Too much heat into an alloy head and it would never torque down properly because the head bolts/nuts would literally sink into the aluminium while tightening. Hardness testers were used after straightening and if it was too soft it was thrown into the scrap heap. Kind of miss this work when I watch videos like this.

you nailed it and the only thing left would be she's on an original 7M so the scarcity of a fresh head after 30-35 years can be hard to come by depending where you are. Literally sink into the metal you can't unsoften aluminum it's so true and devastating when you find out

if you heat this head enough to "straighten" it, its going to lose all temper and be a soft piece of dog shit. but this car is tragedy in motion anyways. so meh.

Thanks Faye....I did my head too....way worth it....mine no headache till now. 4 years already... 1994 model....so smooth....paid 2k to rebuild cylinder head...water leak resealed, valves replaced, springs replaced, valve seat replaced. Washed coolant stains...

Just watched this all the way through simply because of the way you explain thing's with your passion for this motor, and how any good mechanic should always check the manual to make sure it's all being done correct. Like another of your follower's, a Jeff Keryk said, this was the most fascinating video he has watched! I totally agree with him, as even though i know only so much about the workings of an engine, what you said at the beginning about needing to know what the smoking gun is, and how Danny Soliz explained what most people do, and what he know's should be done, captured my attention and made so much sense to me. when you find these kind of guys, you hope they never get old. You want them working on your car forever. I have found the best, most honest mechanic, but he's no spring chicken. Often times, he'll tell me what/how I need to do something myself so I can save money and knows I can do it correctly. He's a keeper.

I am so happy that Danny can fix the head. There are so many machine shops that just let the machine do the work without actually looking to see what caused the original issue. Most of the good small shops have closed. I'll need an align bore done to my VW in a couple of years and I have know idea where to get this done. It is sad to see all of the knowledge vanish. What he said makes perfect sense, that is why in my service manager days I saw so many cylinder head jobs fail on older vehicles. The top is never checked especially when I took them to the machine shop myself it was always the bottom. Especially with aluminum heads, thanks Faye for that informative video.

When grabbing 2 flats on a round shaft the adjustable wrench has the advantage of closing completely on the 2 flats with no play. The "correct" wrench will still have some clearance which will cause wiggle under high torque. You have the right tool for the job.

Great video, love working on older stuff and seeing others do it too. I’m guessing that funny cam cap order you showed is designed to match the relative spring tensions at TDC so when you back them off it minimises strain and distortion.
