John, some years ago, I took a very accomplished engineer shooting p. dogs with me, he was chief engineer on the B-1 Bomber project. We were shooting 600-1100 rounds of centerfire per day, EACH on the p. dog towns. Barrels were smoking to say the least in calibers from 223-243 AI. After we got home after 6000 rounds each of us fired, the Engineer said for me to come over to his house and he had come up with a barrel cooling system. Simple, he ran water right down the bore, then ran 4 patches down the bore on a tight punch type jag, dried the chamber, back to shooting. ONly took around 6 oz of water. When I questioned him on the water in the barrel, he said that until the bore gets to 800*, the water would never hurt the bore, and any tiny droplets of water left in the bore, would be vaporized by the gases that proceed the bullet down the bore. So, we have been using this video for 30 years on the finest Krieger, Hart, Lilja, Shilen SS barrels, and on Chrome moly factory barrels. Running the water down the barrel also had some additional benefits in that the tight patches remove a LOT of carbon. Folks are very, very reluctant to learn new things, we are all a product of what is popular. Best of luck to you!

I've seen some older video on this topic with the water and I totally agree that it can work but water is very unforgiving in F Class. A single drop of water on a round in the chamber can cause a 9 real easily, I've seen it happen many times when it's raining or wet out and people aren't coving their actions or taking care to dry their rounds. For p dogs I have no doubt it's a great solution and appreciate the feedback.

Hey John, because of the tight tube you're putting them in you should remove the air splitter in the front of the adapter on the white unit. This will result in significantly higher air speeds in this situation. Right now it's blowing a significant amount of air directly at the sides of the tube. Cheers!

Have you tried the Riflekuhl? I run mine in PRS matches between stages and it will use 1 CR123 battery on a very hot day and also acts as an ECI.

Great video bud . I bet if you took an insolated lunch box with some ice in it and drew your air from that it would cool even more . Would help keep motor and battery cooler too . But might sweat . Use a clear hose so you can watch for condensation .👍

It's an interesting proposition. But in my case(I don't target shoot, so cooling the barrel isn't important for my aplication) BUT I do hunt in very cold wheater, Point of impact will change from a very cold barrel in winter to summer sight in/load development. Puting a waterproof sock(The Blue cover game the idea) over the barrel and running freezing water over it might get a better very cold barrel first shot sight in, like your first shot at game 👍A styrofoam box with dry ice/Ice to place the barrel in might work to

I have a crazy crackpot idea that hooking up a mini shop vac would be better at cooling a barrel because it would suck out the hot air and pull cool air in. Still figuring out how to mount it. In the meantime, I am using a unit similar to your first one.

Won't work as well. The barrel diameter is too small for suction (pulling a vacuum into the pump). So you will end up with not a lot of airflow vs the pressurized method every one uses.

Been thinking about getting one live in New Mexico where it's really hot during the summer but I think the weight comparison was unfair you didn't weigh the blue one with its battery pack which is necessary to run it

Have you tried or seen others use an ice cold wet rag? Maybe the blower is better logistically and it works as a chamber flag

I know people do it and I've done it when at the range fire forming (with a worn out barrel) but it's just not practical in any capacity at a match. Aside from that I don't want to shock my barrels like that either (there's debate on whether it actually hurts a barrel but I don't want to take any chances).

@@FClassJohn if your barrel is only getting up to 200 deg, it's well below any metallurgical change for the long term. I guess in the short term you run the risk of cooling it differently on one side which will put a very slight curve in it until the temperature equalized. Blowing air down the center would cool it symmetrically so that should maintain consistency

John - off the subject here. I was wondering what optic you use for load development(at 100 yards). I’m curious as I currently use a golden eagle. I like a nice fine crosshair for load development . To get down from 160 degrees to 115 I can do it with the cooler in less than ten minutes on average. If I let it sit it could honestly be 30-60 minutes.

John, I like lithium-ion battery packs as well. Hopefully you are aware that there are FAA regulations regarding size and quantity. They can only be placed in carry-on luggage. Would hate to see an agent pull your batteries on the way to a match. KZbin would not allow my comment with a link in it.
