Hi FCP, here in sweden it costs around $1000 for the job alone if you leave it to a mechanic (parts not included). Thanks to this video alone i managed to replace both belts, waterpump, tensioner, pulleys etc and it worked out great. The only carjob i had done before on a car was replacing breakpads and breakrotor so im not in any way an experienced hobby-mechanic. Love your videos and many thanks!

Thanks FCP for a great how to. I just tackled this job over the weekend on my sons 95 850 non turbo with your kit. A couple suggestions to anyone who is preparing to do this job. Make sure you have a correct serpentine belt tool. I ended up fabricating my own, but it would have been faster if I had the proper tool to begin with. I cannot stress enough to follow the directions when it comes to setting the timing. Check it as many times as you need to make sure that it is correct. Buy a new timing belt tensioner spacer. It is a cheap piece of plastic that I think should be included in the kit. I reused the old one and it broke in half during installation. Good luck fining one of those locally if you do. Lastly, take your time. You will find some of this job frustrating. Good luck.

Great video, thanks! I used it to change the timing belt and water pump on my 1996 Volvo. Before you start the job, make sure you have a T-45 Torx bit. For the serpentine belt tool, I used a square block of aluminum, about 19mm x 19mm, and held it with an adjustable wrench. Remonving the timing belt was the trickiest part: pulling didn't work, so try wiggling and pushing it through the narrow opening. Had to take gloves off to really feel where the belt was.

I wound up cutting my old timing belt to get it out. the video makes it look so easy. I was terrified I wouldn't be able to get the new belt in after I cut the old one off - somehow putting the new one on much more do-able than getting the old one off.

You'll have to remove the tensioner to get the pump out, you might want to consider replacing the tensioner while you have the components out, but if you can't you can compress it in a vice and use a hard metal pin (a nail or otherwise) to keep the tensioner open until you replace it. Hope that helps.

Out of all the water pumps you guys have installed this way (no sealant on mating surfaces) did any of them ever leak? Reason asking is because in the near future I will be doing the same thing on my 98 S70 NA and I just want to get a feel that things won't go wrong when I fire it up. Even though sealant is not recommended, I tend to smear just a tiny bit on them when I replace water pumps on other cars but on the Volvo I want to change that mentality. Great video by the way! Really appreciate FCP taking their time to educate Volvo owners :)

I just discovered a new ticking noise with my Volvo 850. I just got back from a 2 week vacation, and started the car up for the first time, and surprise! The ticking noise varies with engine speed, but it kind of went away after about 10 minutes of driving. I was thinking I might be in need of a new water pump. I had the PCV system replaced about a year ago, if that's what you were thinking, because that's also a common cause of the ticking.

Hi guys yesterday my 95 850 turbo went for timing belt, Water pump, tensioner, pulleys and serpentine belt replacement. The job was made by a very skilled volvo machanic. The thing is it now has an annoying whining most noticeable at 1500rpm coming from the belts area. Saw some other videos with the same whine and it seems the timing belt is too tight. The serpentine belt also was changed to the new route styling. Is it possible that the whine is there until the timing belt settles in? Its driving me nuts because the engine was silky silent before this job.
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 10 жыл бұрын
First thing to come to mind was just that. It's probably too tight however this is an automatic hydraulic tensioner which tensions itself. I would make sure the belt isn't making contact with any components and maybe use a stethoscope to try and narrow down where the whine is coming from. I hope that helps.

So i just bought the t belt kit with the automatic tensioner. Problem is my car has a manual tensioner. Can i use the belt/idler/waterpump from the kit i bought and just get a new manual tensioner?

Yes, it should just be the tensioner that needs to be exchanged.

What year is the car you're doing the service to? With the hydraulic tensioner, make sure you keep the retaining pin in until you're absolutely sure you have proper engine timing. If you have a manual tensioner, just loosen it and you'll be fine.

Do I have to undergo all that process just to replace the water pump? no short cuts?

Probably. The water pump is a lot easier to get in/out from the bottom - possibly the only way to do it. The T Belt may get in the way.

Hello, we recommend to inspect the temperature of the top and bottom radiator hoses, it could be a clogged radiator.

Do you have a timing belt replacement video for a 1994 Volvo 940 Turbo?

Alejandro Gonzalez Yes this video should apply to your S70.

+Alejandro Gonzalez ONLY if you have a model that uses a hydraulic tensioner. (I have a 98 S70 that uses a mechanical tensioner...) Make sure to check your VIN and to open up the timing belt cover so you can check which you have. There's no 98 S70 video of a timing/water pump install with the mechanical tensioner...

In the video you are using a T-45 torx bit to remove a tensioner pulley. The working space to get this loosened is extremely tight. No way I could use my T-45 socket/bit to get in there. My plan is to cut off both ends of a T45 torx bit and set it in a 3/8 drive 5/16 socket and use a 3/8 strong arm to make the overall tool profile as short as possible. Is there some other option to get this loosened? (Mentioning this potential problem in the video would seem to be worthwhile.) Thanks.

Yup that would have been good. I bought a stubby T45, which is exactly 1/2 the length of a "standard" one. Both the socket portion and torx portion are shorter. I heard on another video a stubby is needed.

I really like your videos, they give us the confidence to do it ourselves. I agree that providing an exact tool list would be helpful, especially before the parts arrive and the car is disassembled! Please consider adding an elapse timer from the start of the job to completion. While you edit the video to less than 15 minutes, it would be nice to know how long it really takes. At the same time time, would like to know how much time the service manual allots for each task.
