BMW F15 X5 & F16 X6 Brake Service & Bleed Procedure

The process is virtually identical on the e70 and F15 chassis x5’s. This video was enormously helpful and I’m certain that following the steps saved me a tone of time. Bleed Tip: attach bleed hose to caliper bleed nipple, then zip tie the hose to the nipple. This will prevent any air or fluid leakage, and transfers to each caliper nice and snug without any further adjustment. Now if you see air in the line, bleed until there is none- while maintaining a full brake fluid reservoir. You shouldn't be seeing air in your bleed line, if so, this way you will know it is from the system, and cause of a spongey pedal, not an "eh, it probably crept in at the nipple"

Thanks for the video. You’re well spoken and explain it well. I just changed the rear pads, rotors, wear sensor on my sisters 2016X5 now I’m in the process of changing the same on the front and rear of my wife’s 2015X5. Ordered my parts from Rock Auto. Got the mid to high grade parts. Mine came with the rubber inserts that the slide bolts go into and new dust caps. The rattle clips on the 2015 and 16 are the older style then the newer one you worked on in the video. My wife’s BMW has the wide 35’s on the back. Ugh. Can’t rotate tires and we have go through them quick. We got 101,200 miles out of her pads and rotors. Amazing. But yes one pad was worn completely. Past due. Again thank you for the video. I was in upstate NY/Canadian border. Now down in Myrtle Beach SC. Vehicles are so much cleaner.

Great video, when bleeding to stop air getting pulled in at the bleed screw I'll remove it before pressurising and use a little copper grease on the threads. That way any bubbles you see are from the lines, helpful if you've replaced anything further forward.

I've never done my own brakes before. This video was perfect and made the job super easy. The hardest part of the whole thing for me was clearing out my garage and having to deal with my giant ass 4 wheeler that now decides to have a dead battery and is pretty much impossible to jump start. I guess that's a different video.

Hugely useful - not much specific F15 info out there. Too late to help with my rears, took that job to local shop last month. But saved some $ by bringing in the rear rotors and pads kit you guys sell.

TBH brakes are brakes, there really isn't anything unique about the X15 brakes. A competent person who's done disc brakes before can figure it out.

Almost exactly my methods. Biggest difference is that I use the specified DOT 4 LV fluid. The TYP200 is too thick for the ESP system.

You could also put a thin layer of antiseize or grease on the hole surface of the hub before putting the brake rotor to prevent rust from forming and the disc to get stuck for the next service.

You should do a partnership with Milwaukee to review some of their tools. M12 Stubby and 3/8 speed ratchet are great. Maybe they can send you the cut-off tool and hackzall for review. I try to get to the rear brakes before the pad sensor trips to avoid all that extra work with the back panel and wire re-routing. Dont think the resistance goes up or down on the pad sensor. Rather, when the pad becomes thin enough, the rotor just wears out and breaks the connection leaving an open circuit thus telling the computer time to replace pads.

Grab the fuse chart in your rear fuse box and find the fuse(s) that relate to the Ebrake. Pull them all and reinstall. This can reset the system.

Great job! I will be replacing my brakes in my 2009 528xi E60. I may go with Zimmerman rotors and OEM pads since the Akebonos dont have a good initial bite. Also do you think it will be good idea to bleed brakes with conventional method? ( pedal press) Many thanks for the advise

Hi Marcin, always a great idea to flush out old brake fluid, especially while you are there doing brakes. The pedal method will get you to a good spot, you can always look to upgrade to a bleeder as well, designed for a one-person job.

First time using Akebono pads on any of my BMWs, this being on my F15 X5, and have to agree I'm disappointed in the initial bite. Bought the parts a year ago and didn't need to do it until now, but may see if the FCP guarantee will work for swapping this. Probably give it a few more drives. They are very smooth, but I don't have the confidence in the amazing braking I had before.

We often times will put some Liqui Moly ceramic paste between the two for just that purpose! No harm.

Hi Ben, the sensor just unclips from the brake pad, if you are replacing it you can just pull it out, a small pick tool will come in handy. From there simply follow the routing to the connector inside of the electrical box that Gareth points out, pop open the box and you can pull the cable and connector out to swap out the sensor. We will make a point of showing it for future videos.

i couldn't get the carrier caliper bolts to budge with breaker bar. I think they came with loctite from the factory. don't want to snap the E18 bolts. Space is limited so impact doesn't fit... Any ideas?

Great video. Doing the rears today. Question: My pads, front & rears, are wearing much more on the outer pads than the inner. The warning has not come up on the dash because the sensor isn't worn. inners measure about .25", outers .10" or less. this was at 81K. caliper pistons pushed back easily & I didn't find any issues there. Guide pins looked great. No excess dirt or grim on the carrier. NC climate, not like your area. This is the 1st pad change. Why the difference in wear? Puzzling. Would love to hear your feed back.

The only way that's happening is because the caliper isn't moving back enough. So the outside pad is staying in contact with the rotor, while the piston has retracted and pulled the inner pad away. So while the pins may look okay, what about the inside of the caliper where the pins ride? Grease the pins, that should help.

You can just apply 12v from a second battery to the terminals. One way will run the motor in, putting the brake on, the reverse will run the motor out. So run the motor out until it stops, replace the pad, and use the motor to run it in until it stops again (braking brake set inside the car). Then release the brake from inside the car, you should be good.

If they have made contact, you need to replace. I just did my rear brakes and didn't replace the sensor which was almost at the rotor, but not yet, and it didn't cause an issue. I have the sensor though and will do it sometime, just not now since you have to pop some one time use rivets on mine to get to the connector box.

ATE, who make the calipers specifically state "no grease" in their documentation. Just clean them. I use green Scotchbrite, it polishes them up without scratching. Buy new pins if they are pitted.

Why toss the front pads? Loads and loads of miles left, 10's of thousands of miles. Great to teach how to do this work, but take the time to educate the viewer about when things need replacing, not to just toss it out because there's a light on the dash! This vehicle needed new rear pads, that is very clear, but the front's were fine, just needed inspection. Then determine why the rears wore way before the fronts, perhaps the fronts were replaced and not the rear in previous services? That would be normal, but worth checking so we know there's no drag on the rear brakes causing excessive wear (unlikely since the pistons pushed back easily), or a brake compensation valve not working right. This concept of throwing away perfectly good parts should not be encouraged!
