Great video!! This is the first time I have watched an 1 hour + video and was captivated during the entire video! It’s awesome to think about the millions of gallons of water that must have been used. Just the weight of the water alone could be enough to collapse the building. I am glad there were only minor injuries. This could have been really bad if had been at 1AM or somewhere in that time frame. You always get the best angles but take care of yourself, you were in some pretty serious smoke there for a while!

Another great video my friend. Classic example of "chasing the red devil." Fire science is not just a loosely used term. There are real "fire science" methods used to extinguish fires of that size. Volume and pressure of water used. How much water you can put on it. The scary ones are when there is so much fire that there is no real way to put enough water on it to extinguish it. Protect exposures and people and surround and drown. Reading the smoke and fire color is interesting too. Good job.

Having a good scanner is definitely the way to keep up with what's happening and where. Here in Australia , the radio system has gone digital, and most of the emergency responders are on the Gov Radio Network. Some radio is still analogue, but the really interesting stuff is on the digital network, which meant buying a scanner which could receive the digital channels. Our Police are on digital, but encrypted , which means no way of hearing them (drat !!). Prior to a couple of years ago, I had been listening in on the Police for nearly 20years , on a Bearcat xlt_780 trunk tracker, which is all but obsolete now. My current scanner is a uniden 396xt.

John this is one of best videos you have put up on u tub. Command ran operations on this fire by the book. Communications between Command and Divisions was text book, information was clear and operations carried out. There was comment made about the tower crews not wearing SCBA's. I don't know FDNY SOP regarding SCBA's and Tower Crews. I can only say that our department gives Division Chiefs a lot of options as to how each firefighter will address his or her assignment. Again John Great Job and this video will be used as a training tool. Thanks so much my friend

I have not fought fires ever in an area as urban or with the high-rise structures such as New York, but I always wonder why they rely so heavily on straight-stream smooth-bore nozzles for exterior attach and defensive positions. I completely understand the logic behind steam reduction on aggressive interior attach, but I wonder why with the monitors they are such big fans of the smooth-bore nozzles and attack. Yet another fantastic video John. well done and thank you so much from your nosey Brit fan. I think the Chief said there were 75 appliances and over 200 personnel involved. Sorry to ask more questions but I get confused about the names of the different squads and units, how many operatives on each different appliance, why there always seems to be so many personnel waiting to search the building and clear debris, how many radio channels are used, how, with so many white helmets, many having the same rank, the radio calls do not get mixed up. Sorry to ask so much but I cannot help my interest and queries.I do not expect you, as a brilliant videographer, to answer these questions but you may know a webb site or two where I may be able to find the answers. Awesome coverage man! You deserve to have a thermal camera as a nice supplement. I think there are thermal cameras that work on iPhone, but I'm not sure that would work for wide shots. You might need something more robust and pro level for this. Maybe set up a Patreon to get one with sponsors. Either way, might be a fun tool to have to be able to see through the smoke. I think the firefighters use them sometimes. I don't know though. maybe someone can answer?

Fire departments do use thermal cameras for searching in heavy smoke conditions, sometimes they get other, more humorous uses. When my father was on the Independence, MI fire department they got a call out to an area to assist the sheriff's department. The sheriff's had chased a guy into a wooded, marshy area and lost him. The K9 lost him and they didn't have the helicopter available, so the FD came out with their thermal camera and after 10 minutes it was like "there he is, right over there" lol. I worked in Detroit for 4 years from 07-11, the engine and ladder at my station didn't get the privilege to play with cool gadgets like that. We had old school sensory gadgets for searching like hands and ears lol

Looks absolutely ridiculous what thy were doing there. Was watching that , minute after minute i asked myself : "WHAT are they doing there ??" Move that ladder 10 feet higher and put out the actual FIRE ON THE ROOF, you morons.

@@slcncr I know right! My step-dad is a paramedic/ Firefighter so I have some insight into what they are doing. They are hitting it through the windows and walls but the fire is defensive and I think that spraying it from the top would have been much more effective. It's possible the ladder couldn't extend higher but I don't think that is the case! At very least get a ladder that has two nozzles, one to spray in the windows, and the other hit the fire from the top. I'm just a civilian with a little insight into fire operations but I'm sure they know what they are doing better than me. It just appeared very odd that ladder 45 was only staying in that spot where their effectiveness was greatly limited due to the angle of attack. Regardless, overall good work and stay safe out there firefighters! After 9/11 all buildings over 5 stories should be required to have 5" supply lines (with necessary pumps, hidden into the design of the building while accessible) that run up the exterior of the buildings (that appear natural to the building exterior) to provide water to upper floors. Hand crews could fight from adjacent buildings or could open up nozzles that spray the building next to it that are on fire or opened to spray the interior of the building on fire). I know I have seen some in the stairwells of tall buildings but don't know if they can be opened wirelessly. I know if I owned a building over 10 stories I would want some massive supply lines that lead to each floor and the roof on the inside stairwell and exterior of the building. I may be naive though, I'm only an architect that designs mostly houses, and a few commercial buildings, the tallest I've worked on is 10 stories and the supply lines on it were totally over-engineered. I hope they never need to use them but the fire chief that passed the final inspection personally told me that it was the best water supply/ sprinkler system he has ever seen. When I was designing it all I could think about was 9/11 and what it must have been like for those trapped above the impact zone. I live in Utah and there are very few buildings higher than 20 stories but I hope there have been improvements to water supply in NYC after 9/11. Wow I haven't seen such a wild fire like that in a while. For alot of other departments they could have been in big trouble. God bless the FDNY. Another outstanding job in a difficult environment JJ. Ah, so it is going to be razed? OK, there was something on the news about the bldg being structurally unsound. It's one thing to see this on video, but seeing it in person, unreal, these buildings are actually huge. Plus it was really windy that day, it was still burning thru the night.

What I was getting at, sadly, was that this being uptown, this bldg was probably rent-controlled and whatever is potentially built to replace it will likely be priced out of these peoples; reaches. Manhattan is outrageous when it comes to housing! I hope bldg can be saved for the people displaced by this horrible fire. Guess we'll see.....

Odds are you'll never read this since the video is 3 years old, but I'll put my two cents in anyways. From a personal safety perspective may I suggest you take the extra precaution of getting fit tested for a respirator style face mask? I appreciate all of your efforts to gain optimal filming angles, but I hate to see you being in harm's way of the dangerous carcinogens from burning building materials. I would suppose even a disposable N95 mask would suffice. Also, unlesss you already have to wear prescription eyewear, another good idea maybe some safety glasses. It only takes small fragments to create serious eye issues. Last thing...I've seen comments about a backdraft fire you must have filmed and I haven't found it yet. Can you give me a link? Thanks!!

Awesome job filming. I was wondering how many gallons per minute a tower ladder puts out?? Watching this I understand going through the windows however tower ladder 45 spent the whole time wasting water on the outside of the roof wall. I would think once you had the fire knocked down through the window if all the buckets went to the roof with the amount of water I see they could have knocked it down faster. Just my firefighter experience is all.

Seems like 44 bucket could have done a lot of fire suppression if they elevated 10 feet and actually hit the bulk of the fire. Do the chiefs not see this because most of your viewers sure can.

God Bless the FDNY and NYPD! What they went through on 911 left many of them scarred for life with PTSD and STILL they go back into very dangerous conditions. It takes a special person to do what they do risking their lives every single day. That goes for all of them all over the country.
