One of the most beloved Presidents of modern times, FDR lead the country through the Great Depression and World War II. His eldest grandson, Curtis Roosevelt, Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of my Grandparents, Franklin and Eleanor was three years old when he moved into the White House. He offers a personal view of his famous grandparents.
We use to joke as a family that, here is Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady, known throughout the country for her capacity of giving of herself to people. But, when it got to those of us who were close, she drew back.
-Curtis Roosevelt

I went to Hyde Park during the week. What a most significant, beautiful & magnificent place. To walk the grounds was amazing. Views of the Hudson River. 😊

He was born Curtis Dall, son of Anna Roosevelt Dall and her husband. Why he changed his last name is a mystery.

She sounds like he didn't care for Eleanor Roosevelt to much.....but he didn't mind making money on her either this is why he never talk about this before now when there is nobody around to reject what he is says....so I take his words for what they are worth......NOTHING

It's his story and his relationship. He's entitled to speak of it as he believes it was. Why do people think that great public figures necessarily had to be great people in their personal relationships?

Eleanor Roosevelt's first cousin, Alice, defended the President's infidelity saying, "Franklin was entitled to some fun. After all, he was married to Eleanor." Many people near Eleanor found her remote almost to the point of hostility. The White House under her care was notorious for its terrible cuisine and indifferent upkeep.

as the mother of 2 children who had severe disabilities I take a lot of offense at his constant use of the word "cripple". it's awful. yes, ut was a word from his childhood, but get with the times, grandkids of a president!

After a certain point in life, it becomes very difficult to change long-standing language patterns. And it wasn't just a word from his childhood. I'm just 60, and I grew up with people using it. Granted, I don't use it any longer, but I am more than 30 years younger than Curtis Roosevelt Dall (he died in 2016 at age 86).

His relationship with his grandparents was what it was. Who are you to judge? Eleanor, for all her amazing qualities, was not necessarily the warmest person, or the easiest person to relate to. FDR was quite warm and easy to relate to. And anyway, it's his experience he is speaking about, not your preferred version of what his experience should have been.
