Fear The Walking Dead: Dead In The Water Review

I think a better way they could have done the ending scene was if after Riley gets off the sub, he tries to call his wife but no one answers. Then he notices there was a missed call from his wife hours before, and he hears a voicemail of her dying.

That would have been so much better. Or, have him turn on his phone to find a voicemail from his wife, with her saying she hasn't got much time left.

8:17 to be fair it was the beginning of the apocalypse, and I believe its said in TWD season 3 by that scientist in Woodbury that zombies can die from starvation, so this would explain why they would rather go to the sound than a meal in the beginning, but as the show goes on you can see the walkers obviously aging and literally sleeping or something like that as seen in TWD season 11 premier I think in the military base. quote from movieweb and logic used from comics, "sleeping zombies" are actually a thing in The Walking Dead comic book universe. They are officially called, Lurkers, which are zombies known to play dead due to famish and starvation." this would explain why they would go for the meal instead of going to noise later on in the show rather than the beginning. idk maybe I'm just dumb but that's what I thought of.

All the walkers came back at the most opportune times. The reanimation time varies by person, but no one turned fast enough to not be a plot device lol. The asian guy came back RIGHT when they got to door. The captain never got a chance to reanimate. We saw all these crew members getting eaten, but they never matter. Even the coward died with a gun in his hand. Why not have him shoot himself, but miss the brain stem, and come back as a walker with his finger stuck in the trigger from when he died. A gun shooting indiscriminately in a sub would be awesome, esp since these are new guys that wouldnt be confident enough to just knife the walker in the head like our regular group

With better writing he could’ve been a great character. Think of why could’ve been if this was a bottle episode in season 6 and his story was him not wanting nukes to go off, gets manipulated by Teddy and once he finds out Teddy is going to launch the nukes, he kills him

Dead in the Water is a pretty solid miniseries for FTWD which in context means good FTWD content reminiscent of S6. I remember liking the Flight 462 miniseries they did back around Season 2 and was generally surprised with both of these! Setting stories at the onset of the apocalypse is always compelling to see and the actor playing Riley really makes the most of this opportunity. Good dialogue, a formulaic story that makes the most of the claustrophobic submarine setting, love little things from the life count decreasing to the first walker incident to the trigger finger guy, and Riley’s last scenes show us how much potential was kinda wasted in his S6 character. Regardless still like these apocalypse shorts and hope Tales is more of these creatively unshackled stories!

I also find it fishy that they died right when he called his family. I wonder if his family pretended to die to avoid him because maybe he had some issues. It would be cool if they made up this poor decision by slowing us the other side of the phone call, and that his family never actually died. That they basically lied to him or something

Regarding the phone call - they could've made it a simple voicemail from his wife. This would have still been impactful and avoided the massive coincidence that he called her just in time.

I think that his wife recorded a message for him knowing he will eventually call so she can say goodbye, it's kind of like how Archer pranks his mom over the phone machine

The writers can actually write good content when they bloody want to! I think the big problem is that Fear is so aimless and directionless, there's no real story, it's just dumb characters wandering around creating problems and conflicts for themselves, there's no goal to achieve, no home to defend, it's just a mess. But when they focus on one storyline and have a clear story to tell in a short time frame with no room for meandering filler, they can actually do a good job!

Because season 6 for me have proper story like Morgan try to bring together group from Virginia and big payoff with nukes I was so hype for season 7 after s6 finale but season 7 feels like you said wandering around without proper story I hope you understand my English is not that good

I'll probably do something on it after the series finishes. Not sure I want to review it on a weekly basis though, I kind of lost interest in Star Wars after the Disney movies, so I'm a bit pessimistic about the series. I hope it's good though because I do like Ewan Mcgregor as Obi-Wan.

I think it would have made more sense to bring this out when the characters were introduced and before we knew their fates, maybe this got delayed and that's why it feels so out of place now?

This had a budget of like $12 and still was pretty good, which makes me frustrated at C&G all the more. You should totally check out the podcast on KZbin with writer/producer Jim Barnes from TWD, he talks a bit about how writers rooms work.

I really liked this except for 2 main parts that made me literally groan aloud: the fact that literally every Blk person died (and there were a couple in there!) Racial implications aside, it's 2022! This sterotype is played out 😒 But then again, this is FTWD.. 🤦🏿‍♀️ The second was the soul-crushing predictability of "let's stop and talk right before getting to safety" "oh no, I got bit by a walker that I somehow didnt see crawling towards me on the floor!" "Okay I got bit, let me sacrifice myself even though you dont actually need me to. I mean, you're RIGHT next to the sub door." "Thanks for sacrificing yourself for me bro, even though I just stood there and watched you die instead of, you know, actually running." 🤦🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️😔 Also, the "I have a wife and new baby waiting for me" trope is overdone, esp when it doesnt matter since we know from the beginning he never sees them again

i wanted to like this but it didnt tell me the one thing ive been wondering about since the pennsylvania has been in FTWD... how in the fuck the sub beached, backwards and ended up 60-70 metres from the shallows and turned around... its a fucking massive sub

They actually did this once or twice back in the earlier days of the series. And also did it with the main show a long time ago as well as the Red Machete miniseries just recently. They made one about the lady with the sick boyfriend who had their smaller boat attached to Strand’s boat. Was really interesting and filled in a bit of a gap that you don’t see on the show involving those characters. Dead in the Water wasn’t as impactful on the current story of the show, but I think the story and production are much better than the previous webisodes. Just glad to have something Fear related that isn’t god awful. This almost feels like it should’ve just been a Tales of TWD episode though lol, I suppose that show will have a bigger budget though. I totally agree on the number decreasing though, that was cool. I remember one of the characters said “there’s a hundred men out there” to then seeing it say “37”.

I think that FTWD needs more of these spin-off. GORE, the use of the f-word and the unknown of the walkers just make the series feel more realistic and make me feel a bit sorry that the whole show isn’t as good as this

See here’s the thing man. You gotta open your mind up to the high level writing. Clearly, there wasn’t time for this on the main show because we had to see our protagonists documentary....twice, Morgan giving speeches, and that entire plane fixing story arc. The issue is you and I are just too dense to see the genius decisions going on behind the scenes.

Honestly being on a sub when walkers attack its definitely terrifying between cramped spaces and its very easy to trip thus making it easy to die

Yeah the phone call at the end was stupid. Why not just have him have a bunch of voicemails when he gets back on land and turns his phone on? She couldve been scared and tried to reach him in her last moments. Or even just left a voicemail knowing she was gonna die just in case he heard it. SOMETHING! But the coincidental phone call is a NO for me

I liked this episode!! Well for the most part!! I'm disappointed you did not go over THE CGI BABY IN EPISODE 12. Ghastly...totally Ghastly..please double check for us!!! I do believe they put a CHI BABY in there bro!! But yes seeing this makes me think what we could have done with Rielieys character.. shit this episode was better than most in the season... shit give us more....um well IDK maybe I'm talking out my ACE rite now...much luv my British brother good video

You know the sound bite shite Twd does. That garbage is like perfect TV. In and out in 10 mins. Dead water was better because they built him. Exposition. Fuuuuck. Darabont is right. Darabont is always right. Zombies aren't the point. But they matter. Twd proved zombies matter because their back story can make their change sad. It's layers. Romero loved characters and main zombies. Flash back the postman. The family he talks to. Follow his zombie. His zombie finds his own home. That early connection is gone. *Sighs A postman. Not one in film. But a postman. It matters. This doesn't exist now. There's no interest in characters. Just flimsy story.
