A beautiful film and a topic that we discuss on our walk a lot! Last night i hiked through dense forest, climbed a peak and sat and watched the sunset, ALONE! and a first for me on that scale. It was awesome I loved it, but it came with fear. Fear of being a woman alone out walking and I hate that, I wish I didn't feel that and I will overcome it! Thanks for sharing. Sue

Thanks. Recuperating from surgery. So ready for an adventure. I started bikepacking in my 60’s. Enjoyed the solitude.

I agree, for some folks it's fear stopping them. But for other folks, me included, it's the effort needed to get out there versus the lack of effort needed to stay at home and watch KZbin videos about adventure (and cat videos of course)

When people criticise or make disparaging comments when you have the courage to do something, it is because they are jealous that they don't have the courage to do it. Revel in their jealousy and plan your next adventure.

Yes to everything you say. In my case it's 'What if someone is angry with me?' - they won't be 'What if someone attacks me?' - they won't 'What if the dog freaks out about it (whatever it is)?' - she won't Your videos are just the best...

Thanks for that video Alastair. What you say is so very true. Absolute quality. If we push ourselves just a little bit and overcome the fear barrier how very satisfying that is. Of course that does not mean we have to take massive risks, or not take all the care we can, it just means come out of our comfort zone and try a few adventurous things that we really want to do. Regards, Alastair Topham

Just back from a beautiful microadventure to arisaig with the touring kayaks. Okay it pissed with rain one day, but its a day i will remember rather than being at home. And that other day of sunshine and tropical blue seas made it more than worth while. Please keep up your philosophical ramblings, sometimes they are the difference between staying comfortably at home and leaving the door. 👍🏻

Well said. I love the Idea how you use your fear. You turned it around and you use it as a tool. It works like a motivation for you - what will happen when you fial to live your live fully. This is what scares me too:)

Fear? It's a bit like stepping through the door and looking back for fear of it shutting. No return! In other words it's an appointment with death that inevitable Transition that new life invokes. Were not just letting go of a former identity we're letting go of behaviors and so therefore people to. I know this as a former addict - now that was an adventure! Great video Alastair - thought provoking as usual. All the best. Mark

Thank you so much for igniting that spark and inspiring us to get out there and do these things. Since discovering your "Adventures ig and small" video a couple of years ago, I have been on many adventures - big and small :-) To the tops of the highest peaks in the Balkans, through wild forests and gaping ravines, along the banks of a river between Luxembourg, Germany and France with my folding bike, 450km across northern Spain on foot, from my house doorstep to the castles of the Rhine river, and much more... Thanks again! And: is there a transcript to what you are saying in this video?

Sorry about the audio - I recorded it on my laptop (minus mic) in the 5 mins before boarding a plane home from this trip! I was in a hurry to get it done as I knew that once I was home I wouldn't have time...
@GeorgeVlad
@GeorgeVlad 5 жыл бұрын
@@al_humphreys That's understandable but even if it sounds cliche, audio can make or break a story. It's worth taking a bit of extra time and putting together a small rig that you can use anytime you do VO for your videos. It doesn't have to be too fancy, a handheld recorder and lav mic combo in a semi treated space should suffice.

I think physics is also an impediment. I know it's kept me from cycling to the summit of Olympus Mons or taking a road trip out to Proxima Centauri to see what's happening there.

Not sure if you read the comments? Something I'm learning in North America is that White Privilege has very little to do with the outward advantages given to white people, but the enculturation of confidence that most white people are raised with. We can pursue adventures that are uncomfortable because we have the confidence that we will be comfortable again or that we have the capacity to make ourselves safe, secure and stable. That our society is set up to allow people that look like us to easily regain status. We have grown up looking at others who look exactly like us dipping their toes into discomfort and returning to modernity successful and unscathed. The fear that a lot of different cultures face, that aren't born into white privilege, is not setting off on adventure in the first place but coming back from that divestiture and regaining a status that only the white people around them seem to take for granted.
