Quick Mormon fact check from an active member of the church who graduated from BYU in the last 2 years: -The mainstream mormon church (LDS) did practice polygamy (not polyamory) until about 1890. The president of the church at that time published a manifesto (not the communist kind lol) stating the intention of the church to comply with the American laws. People who were already living in plural marriage situations then moved to Mexico or Canada to avoid splitting up families (like the Romneys). This was the new status quo until 1904 when the new church president ended the practice of polygamy altogether with any new polygamous relationships being punishable by excommunication from the church (a second manifesto). This is about when the FLDS (fundamentalist like QT said) group started up. They refused to abandon polygamy and were excommunicated from the mainstream LDS church. That group is the one that ended up continuing with plural marriage and having a lot of big problems with SA and Warren Jeffs and the stuff talked about in that Netflix documentary that QT was talking about. -To be clear, Mitt Romney is part of mainstream LDS church and he came from the group that moved to Mexico to stay compliant with US law and also continue to practice polygamy until 1904 when polygamy was discontinued across the whole church. -To Hasan's point, there was a strong communist bent to the early mormon saints. They practiced the "United Order" where members would deed their property to the community and then receive back a portion depending on family size etc. It was voluntary, and private property wasn't abolished. This is no longer practiced today, but church members are expected to volunteer time, money and talents to help others within the church and outside. Hope this is helpful/interesting :)

I kept listening to the episode: -Hasan and QT are both kinda right about the "levels"/who can go to the temple. Starting the year you turn 12, youth are allowed to enter the temple to participate in baptisms for the dead. Sounds kinda weird, but really it is just essentially just baptizing a person and stating that they are a stand in for whoever the deceased person is. A core doctrine from the church is that everybody needs to be baptized in order to go to heaven, so essentially they are trying to baptize the people who didn't have the chance while they were alive. (See note on Dante's inferno below). After that, adult members of the church can make more covenants with God (essentially meaning you promise to obey God's commandments, etc and receive promises of additional blessings from God), and those people wear the temple garments under their clothes as a symbol and reminder of promises made to God. To go to the temple, you must first get a temple recommend. This process essentially means that you meet with a church leader and answer a list of questions: Do you believe in God? Do you strive for moral cleanliness? ... etc. This is done on an honor system more than anything else, so it is mostly do you consider yourself worthy to go to the temple. ________________________________________________ As an aside, the belief is similar to that presented in Dante's Inferno (or Divine Comedy as you folks of culture may know it): "They have not sinned. But their great worth alone was not enough, for they did not know Baptism, which is the gateway to the faith you follow, and if they came before the birth of Christ, they did not worship God the way one should; I myself am a member of this group. For this defect, and for no other guilt, we here are lost. In this alone we suffer: cut off from hope, we live on in desire. (Inf. IV.33-42)"
