And that is why the US Navy mandated that no sub commander was allowed to serve more than 5 combat patrols. It was found by mid 43' that after 5 war patrols the commanders would be either to timid and would literally run from combat or they would take extrodinarily risks and usually get themselves and their men killed by taking crazy chances like taking a sub into a harbor teaming with patrol boats for a third time inside a week. Not to take any honor or Valor from them in any way, but it was found to be the case that they would usually take big chances they would have never taken otherwise. Oddly enough, I believe it this commander that was instrumental in setting that policy.

The problem with the MK 14 torpedos was they were developed during the Great Depression and it was very expensive…They only tested them partially due to the extreme cost of testing..The magnetic detonator was faulty so a lot of the torpedos were selected for contact detonation..Unfortunately those were defective too. The brass kept blaming the captains for not properly using the torps. It took quite a while before they were fixed..If the torpedos worked it could have ended the war a year earlier.

The carriers weren’t targeted it was the battleships that the Japanese wanted to destroy. The Japanese knew there were no carriers in Pearl Harbor and the Battleships were the pride of the US Navy. Carriers were still untested at the time
@billrhodes56034 жыл бұрын
Not true. After all, what were the Japanese using to attack Pearl Harbor?.....Kido Butai, a CARRIER force of 6 large Fleet carriers that were unrivaled in the world in terms of striking power, doctrine, training and aircraft. Yamamoto planned on catching at least SOME of the US carriers at Pearl , and was sorely disappointed that they missed them. The British Raid on the Italian fleet at Taranto in 1940 showed the Japanese the way, and while the "Big Gun" admirals didn't see the importance of this, Yamamoto most certainly did, and he was in charge of the IJN Combined Fleet.
@HR151504 жыл бұрын
At the time the Japanese were heavily focused on battleships, just look at the Yamamoto and Musashi. Most of Japans aircraft carriers were not built as carriers. But rather adapted from battleships to fit the Washington naval treaty. The Japanese were fully aware of the Carriers not being in Pearl but continued anyways. Of the three carriers The Enterprise was returning to Pearl and was due to arrive later that day or the next, the Lexington and the Hornet were on missions to deliver aircraft to other US outposts. The only reason we learnt of carriers usefulness is because after Pearl Harbor we had to work with what we had (carriers). The only reason Japan used carriers to attack Pearl was because they did not have the resources to send a full attack. They very much were planning on using their battleships for most of the war. See the story of Japan’s final major battle, all of the battleships were held back for the battle of Lete Gulf while their last carriers were used as bait for the Americans. They specifically held back their battleships time and time again to save for the defense. The Yamamoto is another example, it was constantly pulled back and saved for the right time. They were prioritizing their prize battleship over everything else even carriers. Because we have hindsight we can understand why carriers would of seemed important but back then they were novelties only constructed to fit the Washington Naval Treaty.
@billrhodes56034 жыл бұрын
@@HR15150 Of the six carriers that attacked Pearl, only Kaga and Akagi were converted battlecruisers per the Washington Naval Treaty, as were the Lexington and Saratoga for the USN. Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku were built up from the keel up be CV's. In fact, the IJN spent more on the fleet carriers (and aircraft/crew) than they did on the Yamato and Musashi. Just like the USN, The IJN had it's battlehip faction and CV faction. You are right that IJN doctrine in 1941 mostly still placed emphasis on fleet surface action, but Yamamoto could see that in the future, CV's would be as important and BB's. His goal at pearl was to sink the US Pacific fleet INCLUDING the carriers. So while do think that the IJN placed emphasis on sinking the battleships, Yamamoto wanted to be sure that he got the carriers as well.
